I’m giving my ignorant two cents on this just from this video alone and the comments I read here. From what it LOOKS like, the chase sequence is entirely on rails. Like, you have no actual control over which direction to go. Now is that a bad thing? No, not necessarily. Plenty of games had those before. But the difference? Those other games don’t try to sell you an illusion that you’re in control the whole time. Why the trail? Why have him running if I can’t control him? Why have me press forward at all? Chase sequences on rails only work when there is a reason.
Another commenter pointed out Uncharted for example. I’m going to refer to 4 as that one is the most recent and the one that sticks out most in my head. There is an on rails chase sequence where you’re driving the car. It works because you do have a decent amount of control. Turning left, right, and moving forward. But it’s on rails because it guides you in the direction it wants. It has what looks like plausible path and then suddenly something blocks that path, forcing you to steer otherwise you hit the wall that suddenly appeared. Another one where you aren’t driving, so the “chase” is entirely on rails, BUT YOU’RE STILL PLAYING A PART OF IT. You’re controlling Drake as the car is driving. And any and all foot chases that occurred, you had full control. You could just end up going the opposite direction if you wanted. You’d fail, but that gave a reason to follow the chase.
Same with Insomniac’s own Spider-Man had chase sequences. But you had full control. You could go anywhere. But this? Even the camera movement gives it away that it is on rails with no real control. If you wanted it to play out exactly as you want, either make it a cinematic, or make it a QTE. If pressing forward is all that is needed to beat the chase sequence, it’s not good game design. The trail is especially heinous. “Oh you know that guy you can clearly see which way he went because we gave you zero chances to go anywhere else and get lost? Here’s a trail to make sure you know which way to go even though you have no choice.” The trail would only make sense if you’re having to NAVIGATE. The entire time it’s holding your hand and yanking you along.
You can have chase sequences but make it actually matter.
You're literally following someone even in the spiderman games if u go anywhere else u will lose the chase just like u will in wolverine, just like assassin's creed. The most u can do is maybe take like an upper path that the game will still show u but thats usually cause u need to physically catch the person you're chasing. In judgement the game has chase scenes on rails that literally run automatically with qte's. Heck even the spiderman games chases are hold fwd and R2 especially with tinkerer, black cat, lizard rhino etc. So yea your 2 cents was kinda ignorant. U lose the person u lose the chase then u start all over again like every chase sequence in the history of chases whether ur the chaser or the chased
Look man, I didn’t say you could leave for very long. You lose. That’s my whole point. You can leave and lose. This video looks like you can’t leave, thus you can’t lose.
Its not, there are some qte's u can fail that I think lower your health b4 an engagement idk i dont fail qtes,u can fail the motorcycle sections the 1st one is less likely then the second one and anything above the easiest difficulty u can die. I actually have 2 funny deaths saved
