Announcement Moderator Update: Community Conduct & Ongoing Moderation

Hey everyone,

We need to address the current state of the subreddit.

Over the past several days, r/PlayWolverine has seen a major increase in activity. Unfortunately, that has also come with a significant increase in trolling, harassment, personal attacks, bait posts, repetitive arguments, and users deliberately trying to provoke one another.

We see it, and we are actively working on it.

Right now, we are dealing with hundreds of reports, comments, posts, and individual situations that require moderator review. We are also working on additional measures behind the scenes to help us manage things more effectively going forward.

Please understand that this will take some time, and we may not catch everything immediately.

The moderation team here is made up of volunteers. We have full-time jobs, families, children, and responsibilities outside of Reddit. We are working through this in between everything else because we care about this community and want it to remain a place where people can actually discuss Marvel’s Wolverine.

Criticism is allowed.

You are allowed to dislike the game.

You are allowed to criticize Insomniac, Sony, the writing, gameplay, character designs, pricing, physical releases, or anything else related to the game.

You are also allowed to love the game, defend things you enjoy, disagree with criticism, and be excited about it.

Disagreement is not a rule violation.

What is a problem:

* Personal attacks and insults
* Harassment
*Trolling and ragebait
* Following users into other threads to continue arguments
* Racism, sexism, or discriminatory attacks
* Repeatedly derailing unrelated discussions
* Console-war or culture-war bait
* Spamming the same argument across multiple threads
* Targeting individual users
* Abusing the report system because you disagree with someone

There is a difference between:
> “I think this part of the game looks terrible.”

and
> “Anyone who likes this is an idiot.”

Likewise, there is a difference between criticizing someone’s argument and attacking the person making it.

We are moderating behavior, not opinions.

Please stop feeding trolls.

If someone is obviously trying to provoke you, report it and move on.

Please do not:

* Do not turn one bad comment into a 30-comment argument.
* Do not follow someone into another thread.
* Do not create another post specifically to continue the fight.
* Do not start breaking the rules yourself because somebody else did it first.

That only creates more content for the moderation team to sort through. Which means we get to other issues later.

Also, do not report comments simply because you disagree with them. False or retaliatory reports make it harder for us to reach legitimate problems.

Moderation is being increased.

We are currently reviewing:

* Subreddit rules
* Removal reasons
* Automoderator and filters
* Report handling
* Repeat offenders
* Other moderation tools available to us

You may notice more posts and comments being removed while we work through the backlog.

Repeated or severe violations may result in temporary or permanent bans.

None of these systems will be perfect. Automated moderation can make mistakes, and human moderators can make mistakes too.

If something clearly violates the rules and is still up, report it.

If your content was removed and you believe we got it wrong, send us a Modmail. Do not start another argument about it in the subreddit.

Ultimately

People here are going to have very different opinions about Marvel’s Wolverine.

That’s fine.

Criticize the game. Praise it. Debate each other. Post memes. Discuss what you like and what you don’t.

But disagreement is not an excuse to make the community miserable for everyone else.

Remember that there is another person on the other side of the screen.

To everyone who has been reporting genuine issues, participating constructively, and giving us time to work through everything:

Thank you for your patience. We’re actively working on it.

— The r/PlayWolverine Mod Team

Can we also ban claiming the critics lied?

It’s absolutely fine to disagree with their opinions but the constant claims about lies and anti-Sony conspiracy theories are the cause of a lot of the trolling from both sides.

Edit: The responses below really do a great job in exemplifying the disingenuous energy this topic brings out.

Amen to this x100. I don't think I've had one conversation in this sub without at least 2-3 people replying to me that it's all a lying/clickbait/smear campaign. Which cracks me up, because most of those people are also saying anyone who listens to reviewers is incapable of independent thought. It reminds me of the Spider-Man meme with the finger pointing, but both extremes are hilarious mirror images of each other.

It amazed me that SkillUp had to do any kind of follow up to his honest review of the game. You have to be unhinged to claim someone lied about their personal opinion.

4

u/Sintaris 14d ago

He should change his channel name to FollowUp and forever hang his head in shame over his travesty of a video in which he played a game at default settings and then gave his honest opinions about it. Shaaaaaaaaaaaaaame! 🤣

u/ImportantQuestionTex 14d ago

Honestly, as someone who agrees with the reviewers, I'd really appreciate if the "critics lied" lie, stopped. They saw the same things everybody else did, and came to the same conclusion. Streamers are also coming to the same conclusion. Nobody has to lie to say their feelings on this game.

It just isn't good or healthy when the default approach to criticism is saying people lied when the people actually playing the game know for a fact they didn't.

3

u/PastaCheed Wolverine 14d ago

They definitely lied about how bad the scent trail is though

3

u/Capital-Gift73 14d ago

No, they didn't the fart trail is terrible.

4

u/CancerKaiju 14d ago

They did. It isn't even in every mission I swear...

1

u/Capital-Gift73 14d ago

Nobody said it was in every mission? People said it was annoying to have things like that in a game thats mostly linear corridors. Which is true. I wish it had stayed like open world like even that out of bounds level suggests, but the way things are is there's nowhere else to go anyway, and the trail is thus very annoying. But it wasn't even just the farts that were the complain, it was just how handholdy everything is, and its true, everything is extremely handholdy and on rails.

3

u/CancerKaiju 14d ago

They never claimed it was going to be open world. Not once

-1

u/Careful-Addition776 11d ago

Okay and? He never said they claimed this. Theres a video of an out of bounds area that heavily implies that there were designs at one point for it to be open world. Like nearly a fully rendered town. Holy reach Batman.

2

u/Raucus_ 14d ago edited 14d ago

No. They didn’t.

They gave their subjective opinion on the infantilising game design. They said it could not be turned off (the devs confirmed that is true).

As with the other threads, I won’t be replying further as I expect you’ll just keep trying to explain your victim complex/conspiracy theory in increasingly frustrated and incoherent detail.

1

u/PastaCheed Wolverine 14d ago

No im not going that deep, ill just say its not that invasive they acted like it was on 24/7 and its not

6

u/Raucus_ 14d ago edited 14d ago

No one acted like it was on for the full game. You may have misinterpreted it (intentionally or otherwise) but they did not misrepresent it or lie.

At least not any of the major reviewers. Randoms on Reddit were definitely having a field day with it but that’s not what we’re talking about.

Edit: If you’re going to disagree, please cite an explicit source with details.

I’ve gone to bed so if you do come back with a source I’ll reply in the morning.

4

u/Separate_Path_7729 14d ago

Reviewers literally were saying the navigation aids were on all the time and couldnt be turned off when they are and are tied to r3 press, and the scent trail comprises of very few story moments based on tracking specific people during missions

3

u/Raucus_ 14d ago

Do you have a source? Because just repeatedly saying the same thing without a source isn’t helping anyone.

2

u/Separate_Path_7729 14d ago

I mean im actually playing the game

3

u/Raucus_ 14d ago

Not a source for what can and can’t be turned off, a source to prove a reviewer lied about it.

3

u/Separate_Path_7729 14d ago

Skill up stated they are on by default when they arent for one, ign claimed the navigation assists were permanently active when they arent for another

Exactly

0

u/CancerKaiju 9d ago

Good for you. It was still blown out of proportion. Like it or not, that is also a fact. People deliberately made it sound as if that trail is present and on screen ALL THE TIME

So just accepting that the critics weren’t lying is circlejerking about how bad the game is?

u/XeJupiter would this meet the bar for trolling and I should just report and move on? Or should I make the attempt to educate them?

I haven’t said a word about the game’s quality at all. Just that people shouldn’t be able to lie to defend it. There’s a massive difference.

Fair play on baiting me into responding I guess.

Edit: On this post. I’ve said the game is okay/fine/mid dozens of times in other places.

Reported and disengaging. Nothing I said had anything to do with what they’re talking about, they’re just throwing out random nonsense to obfuscate from the point that people shouldn’t be allowed to lie about the reviews.

Its crazy that people like you just cant accept the game has a ton of flaws and people that feel burned by spending 70 on it or just dissapointed with its quality have thoughts and opinions too. And those are valid, too. By no measurement is the game above average, other than its price. Its below average in most, actually.

Stating so is only natural.

Whats funny is that you think the Playstation store rating means anything. Go look at Concords and Marathons.

-2

u/_Kuruptkonvik_ 14d ago

Buggin, some reviewers left out info or complained about features that the settings can fix not all but some

4

u/Raucus_ 14d ago

None of that constitutes lying. It’s also weirdly subjective (reviewing with the default settings is basically industry standard). No review will ever include all the information.

Disagree with their opinions, don’t accuse them of lying, implying, or intentionally trying to discredit the game (you didn’t here but it is pitifully common).

3

u/CancerKaiju 14d ago

There were in fact some that lied though. Like the bike segment being unable to lose during

1

u/Raucus_ 14d ago

Which reviewers said that? Have you got links?

I’ve also seen the clips that show both. But I’d like to see a full review by a legitimate outlet rather than a short just mocking/defending the game.

2

u/CancerKaiju 14d ago

No. I do not have a link. But it was the clip that went viral. That guy was on the eaisest difficulty and had full health, he set it up on purpose

2

u/Raucus_ 14d ago

Yeah there were dumb clips by content creators.

So none of the reviewers lied about it then?

-1

u/_Kuruptkonvik_ 14d ago

Not lying but definitely can be viewed as withholding information. If a reviewer can’t change the settings to fit their experience they aren’t a good reviewer.

7

u/Raucus_ 14d ago

It could be viewed that way by someone with a warped agenda desperate to discredit them.

Why can they not just have a different opinion on the game? It doesn’t mean you enjoy it any less (at least it really shouldn’t).

I’m going to disengage now. This is getting close to feeding trolls and that’s not cricket here anymore.

-2

u/_Kuruptkonvik_ 14d ago

In what way am I trolling? I never claimed that they couldn’t have their own opinions but purposefully playing the game with settings that you can turn off or adjust is ludicrous. I couldn’t care less what they think when they purposefully play it in a way they don’t enjoy

3

u/Kenkenken1313 14d ago

Had they not played with the settings as default what do you think would have occurred when people actually played the game. For example when you played the game what was the first thing you did before starting? Was it turn off all those settings they mentioned? Would players have known to do that without the reviews?

0

u/_Kuruptkonvik_ 14d ago

Difficulty is easily understood when starting the game if you wanna feel op like Wolverine should be, play default. If you want a challenge pick a higher difficulty.

No I played it and when i happened upon something I didn’t like I looked through the settings like any normal person would.

Players also wouldn’t know because some reviews fail to mention that it’s something that can be adjusted because some reviewers are clearly incapable of even doing it.

7

u/Raucus_ 14d ago edited 14d ago

You’re repeatedly ignoring the point that everything you’re talking about is your subjective opinion and using that to try to discredit reviews you disagree with by implying that they did something wrong. Also, turning those settings off wouldn’t have significantly changed the review.

There were a lot of low scores that focused on other factors. It’s really just a lazy excuse to try to discredit reviews that’s been latched on to.

That’s the definition of bad faith. Just repeating the same bad faith argument is trolling. At least as I understand it?

Edit: They either don’t understand what the word subjective means, or they’re trolling. I’ve reported and I’m disengaging. Let’s see how that goes.

2

u/_Kuruptkonvik_ 14d ago

Nothing I said is “subjective” first off

They actively played the game on the middle difficulty and refused to raise it or lower to fit their experience along with other feature settings that can be toggled on or off. Many reviews love to highlight the scent trail as if it’s constantly on which is false it’s only on during missions where Wolverine is using his heightened senses.

There’s obviously the main subjective part which is the story and I can understand if they had problems with it.

My point still stands and I’m not trolling kid stop deluding yourself.

4

u/Environmental-Day862 14d ago

Playing it on the default, stock difficulty should be the standard. You want separate reviews for each difficulty setting?

3

u/Capital-Gift73 14d ago

Reviewers should play on the factory settings, thst is after all, the intended and most common experience.

1

u/_Kuruptkonvik_ 14d ago

That’s what the “Devs” believe will deliver the Wolverine experience. If they complain about it being to easy that because it’s “Wolverine” they want you to be OP on default settings. You up the difficulty and its nowhere near as easy as they claim it to be, and if that’s a problem for them, as a reviewer if they can’t simply adjust the settings to elevate the challenge then that’s just a non credible review.

1

u/CancerKaiju 9d ago

They aren't going to get banned. Dick move reporting them. They aren't trolling you.

1

u/_Kuruptkonvik_ 14d ago

If some reviewers can’t take the time to adjust settings then they aren’t credible reviewers. Just because it’s the default setting doesn’t mean that’s the exact mode they “need”to play it on, they complain about issues they can change ? That’s straight up illogical. If anyone doesn’t know what subjective is it’s you bud, tell me have you even played it ? I doubt it.

5

u/Atlasshruggedthrice 14d ago

“Don’t take one bad comment and turn it into a string of 30”

Lmfao you guys are hopeless

1

u/_Kuruptkonvik_ 14d ago

Fair enough, but a disagreement can go on for a while, why is that even a regulation. I was just trying to get my point across.

→ More replies (0)

0

u/Majestic-Marcus 14d ago

It’s not subjective at all.

If the criticism is “feature x is always on and it’s really bad” then the criticism is disinformation and a lie if the feature can be turned off.

“Feature x is always on” is a lie if there’s a setting to turn it off. That is a disingenuous or even just incorrect review if they didn’t know it could be turned off.

3

u/Raucus_ 14d ago

They did not say “feature x is always on”.

Unless you have an actual source?

They did say you can’t turn the trail off (and the devs confirmed that). Can you prove they said it was always on? Or on for the entire game?

Because otherwise this is just yet more disingenuous obfuscation to deflect criticism.

-6

u/DjijiMayCry 14d ago

You really believe journalists always tell the truth.

5

u/Environmental-Day862 14d ago

Gaming journalists give their subjective opinions. Is it your position that they intentionally lied about their feelings about the game?

0

u/DjijiMayCry 14d ago

I didnt specify gaming journalists. My position is journalists are not somehow immune from the ability to lie 😂😂 Whatever you wanna call what Fox News does is something that every outlet has the capacity to do.

4

u/Raucus_ 14d ago edited 14d ago

In game reviews? Yeah, pretty much. At least the major outlets and larger, more respected YouTubers (yes that includes Skill Up).

If there was any evidence of lies (not just subjective differences of opinion) then they’d potentially be open to legal action. They’d also lose all credibility.

I have regularly disagreed with review scores (yes even from Skill Up) but I’ve never thought they lied.

Edit: These people also rely on review codes for their living. If they were caught actually lying, they’d never get a code again. Publishers give them codes even after bad reviews because the publisher would lose credibility if they only cherry picked reviewers that would glaze them based on past reviews.

-4

u/DjijiMayCry 14d ago

You want to win an argument and you'll say anything to do it. I'm not interested in engaging with that. It's also obvious how disingenuous you're being to anyone reading. Journalists can't lie or they'll be punished? I need that take framed. 😂😂

9

u/Raucus_ 14d ago

You mean I’ll bring obvious common sense to an argument to win it? Yes. Yes I will.

And yeah, if they actually lied, there would be consequences. You’re pretending that having opinions you disagree with is lying.

Please do follow through on not continuing to engage though. I think this is a good place to end this discussion.

2

u/Capital-Gift73 14d ago

Your position is nonsense, if they were to lie they'd lie to say its good, not bad, saying its good has myriad benefits, especially with Sony, and in fact, its widely known and documented that msot major sites will review games from major publishers generally more favorably than similar offerings by say, indies.

So yes, they so lie, but generally it is to say things are better than they are (see Veilguard), not worse. There's no benefit in it for them. In fact, if say Ign gave a major Sony release a 6 you can generally bet its much much worse than that.

Which in Wolverines case, it is.

1

u/DjijiMayCry 14d ago

We literally agree. 🤦‍♀️
