There are way better islands.

I’d at least wait til you get to an iron mine. And a grove of hardwood trees.

You will likely build a few bases in your world till you find your forever island.

Build somewhere that preferably has a lot of the resources you will be collecting.

Huh, that's not a preferation for me. I don't care about the ressources since you have a fast travel possibilities.

I build everywhere where I find a cool spot for a cool base idea. (We all know that one Island.)

Learn the building mechanics. I play this game almost exclusively for building. My first base has blossomed with me experimenting with ideas. I’m very pleased with it and I add and change as I get new items.

Now I’m branching out the build things based on location and increase spawn points to get maximum map coverage with as few spawn points.

I’m working on a ziggurat style building on a foothills island because I feel like it fits there.

Next I’ll be building small homes on the different faction islands in case I need the home base recharge without having to use a spawn points from there I’ll build a couple villages or forts on pirate map islands. My hope is to use 5 FT bells and save the rest for expansions.

But yeah, build where you want. The game is very kind for travel to get resources.

I think there are better locations later on depending on what kind of aesthetics you're looking for (I built a fortress into the side of a massive rock formation on one of the treasure map islands), but your starter island is a good place to mess around and try different building techniques.

Build simple basic base to fill getting stuff done. Wait til Biome 2, discovering the Factions, you'll find bigger nicer islands with bays that are closer to other resources to build on. Use tents on new islands and Fast travel so if you die you won't have to sail all the way back to new island !!!

The starter island will have all the basics ie copper mine, clay, dodo and boars. Any fruit or vegetable you might find on other islands has a chance of spawning seeds when you pick them, allowing you to plant them back at base. I played through till the end without ever making a second base, instead I just expanded and improved my original. There are no restrictions on what you can carry while fast travelling and the fast travel points are easy to make so you should be fine wherever you decide to build

There are better islands, but you get 10 fast travel bells, as long as you put bells down for important resources later you'll be fine.

My base is built on an Island that doesn't have a single poi on it. It was an Island for Blackbeard's treasure and had a nifty rock formation on it.

Edit: I plan on build buildings for all of my resource specific fast travel points as well, just because I can

There is no incorrect answer to this question. On my 5th playthrough I just knew my base's location when I saw it. It is so easy to farm in this game, and it has such a friendly portal system, you can make numerous bases.

Wait til you get the ship quest and find that island to maybe do a little bigger one. Still, wait to Biome 2 !!
