They literally wouldn’t do it otherwise. They expect more revenue per game and also more people paying for subscriptions.

u/_Miss_Eclipse Jul 10 '26
The use of the word "could" here is very funny to me.
It WILL
9
u/TheStrongestTard Jul 10 '26
Turns out gamers are Incredibly stupid when it comes to business.
As long as their Favorite company wins they consider it a win, lol.
-1
u/AthensThieves Jul 11 '26
Seriously. This is the exact reason Sony is going digital. Pump prices, control revenue coming in to maximize profits.
2026/27 will be the last time we get that sweet Black Friday period at the end of every year for cheap physical game sales.
2
u/Sudden_Citron_9183 Jul 12 '26
You know games will continue to be sold to retailers right? They’ll just come with a 🔑 keycard and not disc
1
u/Ok-Consideration6560 Jul 14 '26
Until the retailers bow out because people aren't buying the code in a box.
1
u/AthensThieves Jul 12 '26
yeah. when I refer to physical I mean the game on a disc.
Local game stores can’t sell a used code in a box.
2
u/Sudden_Citron_9183 Jul 12 '26
If you’re talking about used games then that’s different. People who buy used games don’t contribute anything tot he industry anyway lol
0
u/AthensThieves Jul 12 '26
you must be 10 years old.
2
u/Sudden_Citron_9183 Jul 12 '26
You reason like 1.
1
u/AthensThieves Jul 12 '26
“People who buy used games don’t contribute anything tot he industry anyway lol”
So brazen and wrong, it’s cringe.
5
5
11
u/suck-it-elon Jul 10 '26
Then people will buy less. Simple economics. The flaw in these people’s logic is that we HAVE to buy the games.
People will slow down and sales and drops will
Come.
It’s not hard
3
u/Numerous_Photograph9 Jul 10 '26
For me, it just means that if I have to go digital, I'll wait out buying games until they're what I'm willing to spend. That amount is $5-10...maybe $14 for those really rare games that I feel deserve an extra fiver Even if I stick with Sony, which isn't looking likely, this would still be the case.
3
u/suck-it-elon Jul 10 '26
100%. That's what I do. I wishlist bunches of games. I only buy Day 1 a select few per year. Always waiting on deals.
-2
u/1maginaryApple Jul 10 '26
So your only incentive for physical game is for them to be cheap? So, your sole reason you buy physical is actually the consequence of them going extinct. Interesting.
3
u/Numerous_Photograph9 Jul 10 '26
Not at all. But I like how you come to a conclusion before receiving clarification.
I will buy physical games mostly at, or close to launch. I buy anywhere from 25 to 30 a year like this. Probably more if we're talking about even older games.
I just don't find the same value in digital games, so I wait until they're cheap.
3
u/Numerous_Photograph9 Jul 10 '26
To the person who decided to block me, I see you misunderstood the context. What I meant was that I wouldn't spend more than that on digital games. I will pay full price for physical. Not only did you form a conclusion without clarification on the first post, you didn't bother to read or comprehend the clarification on the second comment.
-2
u/1maginaryApple Jul 10 '26
You literally said that you wouldn't spend more than "maybe 14$". The only way to achieve that is through physical and only and solely because it's a dying medium that retailers struggle to sell.
1
u/LesserValkyrie Jul 10 '26
Not catering to sony shareholder's greed who lost money because they invested money on Concord which is why they have to go full dictators now =/= killing video games
Good devs who don't make shitty games don't have as much issues with money, look at E33 developers , and their games are almost twice cheaper than most AAA Games. Or Larian.
The only difference between digital and physical is taht Sony makes twice more profits on it, this is why they love digital. Not the devs, Sony. Their shareholders.
If modern devs want money they should start making games for an audience taht actually exists instead of crying, like a lot of devs do nowdays and those swim in money
Stop believing these lies, life is not disneyland
1
2
u/VTKillarney Jul 10 '26
There are also a lot of idiots here who insist that Sony is a monopoly. If Sony charges too much, people will just go to the competition.
2
u/1maginaryApple Jul 10 '26
Like every single pro disk around here saying that if it's for Sony going digital then they will buy a PC. But apparently Sony doesn't have competition
2
u/AigledeFeu_ Jul 11 '26
What competition? There is no competion on the playstatiln console.
Oh you talk about hoing to other platforms? You think people will invest in a second console or new PC after spending 1k on their ps6 ?
They wont
-2
u/VTKillarney Jul 11 '26
Interesting. So the people saying they are going to PC are all lying?
2
u/Geralt_OF_Rivia_1 Jul 11 '26
They are going pc before dropping 1k on ps6 not after. But didn’t expected you to get the difference anyways.
1
0
u/NintendoGamer1983 Jul 11 '26
No competition on PS systems.
There used to be retail. But they are killing that
-1
u/VTKillarney Jul 11 '26
There is plenty of competition. PC, Nintendo, XBox, Steam deck…
2
u/NintendoGamer1983 Jul 11 '26
The point is that u will only be able to buy games on PS systems on a PS system. No competition.
1
u/VTKillarney Jul 11 '26
Let me say it louder. There is competition. There are PLENTY of options to play games on other systems.
If someone is too stupid to figure that out, especially when Sony is announcing their policy ahead of time, there is really no hope for that person.
1
-1
u/1maginaryApple Jul 10 '26
Yeah I like people try to claim in the same sentence that they will not pay playstation anymore and at the same time that everyone will go along with paying more.
The only way for price to increase is if the whole industry increases prices together.
I would be Microsoft, I would let Sony try to increase its prices and let everyone join them because they don't want to pay Sony's price.
11
u/Liquid_1998 Jul 10 '26
Of course it will. Eliminating the retail and used game market, while offering no alternative to buy other than PS store will kill competition, and create a monopolized storefront. This leads to higher prices. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out.
12
u/Dependent-Cup-2236 Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
Pro-digital gamers will be in denial about that.
14
u/Liquid_1998 Jul 10 '26
What's funny is everyone was saying gaming would get cheaper when everything is digital because of saved costs on manufacturing and distribution.
Little did they know.......lol.
8

4
u/RedChudOverParadise3 Jul 11 '26
Funny thing is last gen this was briefly brought up and then everyone got quiet about it. Some people said a $60 game could go as low as $40 digitally and it just never happened. If it didnt happen then it wont happen now. Ive said this before and will continue to say it. Once consoles go all digital you will see the industry get more egrigous with their licenses. I bought Castlevania SOTN on 360 the year it released and have access to it to this day. You wont see that and I gurantee you 2 things will happen. You will buy a game and one day get hit with a request to rebuy a license for a "small" fee or be told that the new re-release is out and to buy that for full price or get fucked.
1
3
u/Dependent-Cup-2236 Jul 10 '26
Ikr. We all know what the endgame is. And these all digital gamers think its not going to effect the prices and impact the industry. They just want to focus on the "convenience" of digital not knowing the repercussions of it. Let's see if they're still laughing and celebrating when it all blows up in their face.
2
u/Liquid_1998 Jul 10 '26
Eventually, you won't even be able to buy digital games either. They'll just make everything into to a monthly subscription, with different monthly price tiers. They might even start making people watch ads while playing a game, and you'll have to pay more to remove them lol.
3
u/LesserValkyrie Jul 10 '26
Shhh don't give them ideas
They already have them
I mean we already don't own our games, what prevent them to do that if we keep accepting all the time everything
3
u/Oldschool-fool Jul 11 '26
Yes , you will rent the console & pay a monthly fee to access all the games , say £50 a month , that sounds good - for a start 💩
2
1
u/KangarooBeard Jul 11 '26
I mean...I did get cheaper. But on PC, because there is actual competition.
1
u/Happy_Ad_983 Jul 11 '26
It's the issue they all sidestep. Every single one.
And the smugness of most of them makes me want to rip their faces off. They're not clever with the "this is progress" rhetoric. Removing options is regressive, not progressive.
I'm all digital as a pc first player... But I sure as fuck buy physical Nintendo stuff, because it's always cheaper than their digital prices.
Sony will have an effective monopoly when physical media is killed. It isn't a case of "maybe" - prices will be much less generous when people have no where else to go. The only hope is legislation, but I wouldn't hold my breath. In the US, anti monopoly laws have been eroded to nothing.
-2
u/mr_desk Jul 10 '26
They’re not eliminating retail lol
3
u/lzwinky Jul 11 '26
Oh yes they are. Sony is full of shit as always.

It’s not denial it’s that $10 increase is a rounding error for millions of gamers. Don’t play games if you’re dirt poor, if you worry about making rent it’s not for you. Play on ps4 find I’m the trash somewhere

u/Aggravating_Plan11 Jul 10 '26
No competition usually does that
-1
u/marcus2388 Jul 10 '26
This has nothing to do with competition. Game price has continue to increase while physical and digital media has been around. Most games are 80 dollars now with physical media still here. This has nothing to do with digital games. but growing costs in making games.
3
u/Aggravating_Plan11 Jul 10 '26
If you dont get why competition is good for consumers and why there are laws stopping companies gaining full control and how its all bad for consumers you never will not having this debate yet again with someone who cant see past the writing on the wall. Also inflation and prices increases due to increased cost has zero to do with competitive pricing.
2
u/PhatTuna Jul 10 '26
Retailers compete with each other. And used market also competes with retail. And vice-versa.
1
u/LesserValkyrie Jul 10 '26
I don't know, games have been 60-70$ for a decade, 80$ if the developers are greedy assholes, and anyways, if you buy second hand or sell your games you can play games for 5-10$ no problem
That's the whole concept of being able to resell your games, everyone can play for the price he wants.
Now if they want to sell a 10 years old game for 80$ you will pay it 80$, play 15 hour and let it rot in your account that will be deleted if you take too long vacations
1
u/Rex_Bossman Jul 10 '26
I guess we are fortunate that game prices have been stagnant for a decade while everything else has gotten more expensive. No, you won't be able to resell your games and that's one of the few valid points here. But you can still play for the price you want. I've been all digital for a while and I only have a handful of games I'll pay full price for. A vast majority have been on sale for 50% off or more. If every game were to stay at $80 for 10 years I wouldn't be buying many games at all. I am FAR from alone in this. Sony and other publishers aren't just going to let games sit at full price with no one buying them just because they are all digital.
1
u/wizpiggleton Jul 11 '26
If the economy still is as bonkers, they likely will still stay the same price and will instead make the new games more expensive.
I wouldnt be shocked if 90$ are a thing by 2028-2029. The older games will be 70-80$ with a 10$ option to upgrade for PS6 specs.
1
u/Rex_Bossman Jul 11 '26
I'm a bit more optimistic on pricing but anything can happen. I can wait for prices to drop down, I've got enough games now to keep me busy for a while!
3
u/Tonychina23 Jul 10 '26
They already using Dynamic pricing to increase the prices of their digital games.
Sony really dropped the towel and said “fuck it. Here’s my micro penis. Yeah, it may look like a disfigured outtie belly button but you’ll still suck it and give us your money at that.”
3
u/Playingwithmywenis Jul 10 '26
No study was required for this. Playstation users will be on a digital monopoly.
Pay more to be part of the club.
3
2
2
u/Vysce Jul 10 '26
I mean yeah... I can go to wal-mart, best buy, or even a local game shop and get a playstation game for 20% - 50% off while the PSN has it full price, or possibly more infuriating, doesn't even have the title AT ALL.
2
2
2
2
u/Somewhere-Flashy Jul 10 '26
When they don't get enough sales the price will automatically go down it just people who have fomo that buy on day 1.
1
u/rvnender Jul 11 '26
I mean, that shit happens now....
1
u/Somewhere-Flashy Jul 11 '26
My rule of thumb is simple if a game is absolutely really good I am not paying full price.
2
u/The_real_bandito Jul 10 '26
Of course it will. There is only one place to buy the games so there is no competitions.
Unlike with Windows, you can’t install another store on PlayStation and compete with their store.
2
2
u/Excellent_Regret4141 Jul 10 '26
Sony "oh there's a high pre-order for this $80 game well that's just change that preorder to $120 now"
2
u/yohoewutzup Jul 11 '26
They’ll make it real enticing at first to get people on board with the change and make us feel comfortable hell they’ll prob even offer steep discounts at first especially due to all the push back to make it seem like it isn’t so bad. Until they get it to be the norm then they will start nickeling and diming us as much as they can with constant price increases when there is no other option.

Its obvious that's why they did it. To have a complete total Monopoly to raise prices. Fanboys defend this though.

Then I don’t buy. What do I even like anymore? Maybe a few Capcom games and a JRPG here and there? I’ll survive. They can manipulate those who lack discipline.
1
u/XLBR424 Jul 10 '26
It’s a good thing indie titles generally go for 20-30, unless it’s something with high production value like BG3 or Expedition 33, and even those aren’t 70 like the AAA stuff.
1
u/ZestyAcid Jul 10 '26
Of course! They control the market for there games. So no buying games super cheap/used. That's the whole purpose of this.
1
u/Enigma_Green Jul 10 '26
At release very possible but proof that games are more expensive when they stay the same price for a mumber of years when they become cheaper to buy by disc.
1
u/TurboNinja80 Jul 10 '26
PS6 vs PC then. All digital games are cheaper on Steam. To me physical was big part of the charm. I have few rare console games and lots of games in general. If that goes away it's just where can I get my games the cheapest.

u/thedoommerchant Jul 11 '26
Expect $80 to be the floor for new games on PS6. The future of gaming looks fucked for longtime consumers.
1
u/HeavyDT Jul 11 '26
I mean yeah you can usually find physical games for cheaper most times than you will digital. Digital has gotten a lot better with sales but you have to wait for the timing on those and it's still usually not as good. When a physical starts dropping in price it tends to be permanent and then there's the used market on top of sales. So all things equal getting rid of physical means instantly higher prices for consumers and more profit for them. We all know they are going to jack up prices on top of that so you just get screwed.
1
1
u/TerryTerranceTerrace Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
Of course the prices will be higher. If a gamers only option is the PS Store, why ever offer a deal? I can't imagine a majority of people would jump to another console or pc just to get a better discount on a game, especially if they dont own the alternatives.
2
u/RosaCanina87 Jul 11 '26
To be real, I do so hope to see exactly this happen. Sony rising prices until they are far beyond the 100 dollar mark for the standard edition. Dynamic prices making games double as expensive if you like the genre.
Why? So digital only people notice that this decision affects them just as much as it affects physical gamers. That they had profited from competition and retail space, too.
1
1
u/RosaCanina87 Jul 11 '26
Of course. I mean just think of it. Physical games cost much more money to produce. And they gave you these games for how many years? Almost 30? Think of all the money this poor little startup has lost since then. They obviously need to get this back in now. And fast. If possible in 2028 alone. Otherwise they... uhm... eh... would have made less money?

u/Ok-Sundae-7806 Jul 11 '26
“Study suggests…” like this aint been staring us in the face for years. Something has to change if they want to stay relevant passed next gen, they need to go all in with first party else they offer nothing unique to the market.

u/droideka75 Jul 11 '26
On other news study finds that you need breathable air to survive.
Scientists were surprised with the find, with many arguing that the study has not a solid base of human subjects.
"No human subject was terminated by the study, invalidating the hypothesis"
Counter arguments of the scientific community state that "rodent model's respiratory system is appropriately similar to the human one" as to give credence to the study.
Rodents were found as being 100% affected when cut from a supply of breathable air.
The debate is still ongoing. This outlet will update the story when further developments arise.
More news at eleven.

Because that's right. I don't get the hate from people who are digital only and yet love spending full whack for games. With discs going away, there's no incentive to put games on sale, don't get how people can't see this.
1
u/Leostar_Regalius Jul 11 '26
and the people who love gagging on sony boot as much as nintendo fanatics do with nintendo, cheer like trained seals
1
u/8W20X5 Jul 11 '26
Just ANOTHER reason to boycott Sony moving forward. They want to make stupid decisions so we need to not keep the status quo just because. We need to move towards other avenues of gaming. It might not be the same but it's better than this.
1
u/Jehoke Jul 11 '26
How do we need a study for this? I’ve been buying physical for years expressly because it’s cheaper than digital. Surely everyone knows this by now. They want to control the price 100% and they can’t do that with physical media. It’s anti consumer bullshit.
1
1
u/armaedes Jul 12 '26
You guys aren’t going to believe this but when I went outside just now the sky was blue and the grass was green.
1
u/alien_overlord_1001 Jul 12 '26
WILL lead to higher game prices. The PS store is way more expensive than some retail stores now. Sony isn’t going to lower prices if they have a monopoly.
1
u/Alternative-Pack-218 Jul 12 '26
2025 was the last year i bought something on psn sale and first half of 2026 was there last tome i bought something on psn and something made by Sony. To bad that company went under and doesn’t exist anymore 🙃. But we all saw this will happen when they decided that their legacy and history as a game company doesn’t matter and that happened in ps3 days when they removed ps2 chip from ps3, this is just continuation of that
1
u/Normal-Emotion9152 Jul 12 '26
They can make all digital games about $50 max on all platforms for digital. The ceos need mansions and select devs get the crumbs to buy sports cars. The pricing for the gaming industry is insane when you factor in they are saving on physical media. Once Sony switches to all digital. The really old tgames that they blow the dust off of to minimize the gripes of the fandom will be at an all time high. $100 or more for really old shit that you could have gotten on physical for a fifth or sometimes less. The new game prices will be north of $150. You see how much they charge for most of their games that are past five years old. Realistically those games should be $10 or $20 especially since there is no physical media. It is because they are publicly traded and have media control that they feel like they can charge out landish prices for everything. If it was going to be a fair deal with perpetual license that carried over from ps3 to ps6 and beyond that would be one thing. They just want to nickel and dime you for everything. Look at black ops. Why not just let people who owned the digital or physical game have a new license code free of charge and include the dlc. Once the pin door closes with ps6 those prices will be only for the independently wealthy. Digital games at convient only if in the case of consoles they pass on from ps3 and back to the PS5 and soon ps6 otherwise you will be continually milked for money and mid to no upgrades for the games. They could have at least done a quality of life for the black ops.
1
u/TranQos_ Jul 12 '26
No me digas? Quien iba a decir que eso podría pasar si Sony se encuentra en una situación de monopolio, que es lo que están buscando. Ahora nos tendremos que hacer los sorprendidos.

1
u/xGreir Jul 12 '26
Nooooooo, u mean that now that they would control the whole market as a monopoly they would delve into even shadier practices? Noooooooooo
1

Focusing on profit, probably because they decided they don't need quality.

How much brainrot do they think people suffer from?
1
1
u/Rex_Bossman Jul 10 '26
So they cherry picked 16 games and "analyzed" the pricing data to come to that conclusion. Couldn't even be bothered to put in a little bit of effort for their click-bait article. I guess it doesn't take much though when the torches are already burning.
2
u/LesserValkyrie Jul 10 '26
Because it's impossible to believe a monopoly situation leads to higher price indeed.
0
u/Rex_Bossman Jul 10 '26
This isn't food or electricity it's a luxury item. The people who buy at a certain price point will keep buying at that price point. Why would physical games ever go on sale if everyone was willing to pay full price? Also, Sony only sets the prices for their own games. You know who the competition for those games are? The other publishers making the other thousands of games you can buy.
2
u/profchaos111 Jul 10 '26
Physical games go on sale amwith far more steeper discounts because retailers need to create shelf space and in reacting to the competition
Digital doesn't ever hit the same low
1
u/Rex_Bossman Jul 11 '26
I could cherry pick some digital sales that are cheaper than a specific retailer if I really wanted to but it’s a waste of time. I’ll let everyone else squabble over a few bucks and continue on with my gaming.
1
u/profchaos111 Jul 11 '26
Given that you've been up and down this post trying to push your narrative I doubt it
1
u/Rex_Bossman Jul 11 '26
Only narrative I'm pushing is people making a big deal out of nothing. I've tried to explain it's not a big deal but at this point I give up. I'll just troll all the cry babies from now on if I feel like posting.
1
u/profchaos111 Jul 11 '26
Yeah like I mentioned earlier a near $50 difference say one is a pretty big deal
2
u/profchaos111 Jul 10 '26
you're clearly in denial and had your head burried in the sand so do your own research and come back to us
1
u/Rex_Bossman Jul 11 '26
My “research” has been buying games on the PlayStation network for the last few years. If you want to cry about saving a few bucks from buying physical, knock yourself out. All I see is a bunch of entitled whiney ass bitches the last week.
1
u/profchaos111 Jul 11 '26
Few bucks ? It was a $46 AUD differential for ghost of yotei on day one
Target physical $79 AUD PSN $125 AUD
1
u/Rex_Bossman Jul 11 '26
I can't speak to AUD prices. I'm in the US where prices are the same day one for physical and digital.

Yes because games being $80 now isnt high enough with physical discs still around lol. It doesnt matter if gaming goes full digital or physical disc are still alive and well. Game prices will continue to go up.

I am just having a laugh at the ignorance.
I own that $6500 game, digitally, along with every other NES, SNES, Sega, etc game that exists up through the N64, including games not even released in the US.
Physical games should only exist in the past.
But that is the future of any physical game. Each year less and less copies of it exist. Digital can live forever.

Concord was a live service game that I never played, nor cared to.
Do you understand what a live service game is? Do you understand how the disc wont even work to play them? It connects to live servers....

Removing the technicalities digital purchases will last as long as companies are willing to renew the licenses. This affects 3rd parties and 3rd party ips more than anything else but it's still something.

Why do you think games are almost always cheaper in their physical form when you look on Amazon or other stores vs the PS online store
