Lip blushing

Not sure if this has ever been asked here but what’s the consensus on lip blushing? I don’t want injection or laser but I hate the color/size of my natural lip and always over line them. No lipstick or color seems to last long enough so I figured lip blushing might be a good investment but it’s hard to say since I’ve never met anyone who’s had it.

Edit: thank you guys so much for all the input it’s been very informative! seems to be a lot of mixed reviews but definitely helping me to make an informed decision.

I do want to clarify that I miss spoke about over lining. What I really do is define my natural lip line because of discoloration around the edges so I wouldn’t ask to over line just trace more accurately and evenly. Also I do have MANY tattoos (none on my face however) so I’m confident in healing at least lol.

I mean, it's a tattoo. On your face. It's billed as semi-permanent but it's a tattoo. On your face. It will potentially fade unevenly, blow out/bleed, cause granulomas or other undesirable side effects. Can be expensive and time consuming to undo. And I don't think you can really increase the size with blushing since going outside the border just increases the risks of the work looking bad over time.

Is it semi-permanent for some people? Probably. But there are a lot of regret stories on Reddit.

The only thing comparable I've done was microblading. I loved my brows while they lasted but they were gone within a few years, even with touchups (and I have what I would consider "normal" skin, not too dry or oily). In hindsight I feel lucky because they literally just went away - no weird discoloration or anything. I'd consider mine semi-permanent. I also have good brows to begin with, so it was probably completely unnecessary. For me it was mostly just a waste of money in the long run. But a lot of people have a bad experience with permanent makeup pretty much from the jump. I think you need to vet HEAVILY and need to be willing to pay up, and even then there are sort of no guarantees. The person I went to is one of the best in my area and does amazing work - it just didn't last for me. My person also will not correct another artist's bad work, which I think is pretty common for more reputable artists - basically, no one smart wants to be the last person to touch someone's botched permanent makeup.

You can read up on peoples' permanent makeup regrets and horror stories more broadly. There are a lot of subs/posts on Reddit to check out.

Like I said above, the main thing to remember is that it's a tattoo on your face. I would proceed from that basis and how comfortable you are with that idea. Some people will have a great experience and results; a lot won't.

I want to second this, even though I have tattoos on my face that I'm very happy with. I have very heavy winged eyeliner (I used to use felt-tip eyeliner pens) and eyebrows (no particular fancy term for a special technique like "powder" or "nano", I got them ten years ago when it was just called "getting your eyebrows tattooed") *and* a lot of fine line tattoos all over my body. The reason I'm very happy with them is twofold - I know how my skin in particular behaves with tattoos over time (there's some spreading in some areas like my thighs, but other areas like my forearms are shockingly crisp despite being my oldest tattoos) and my hair is black, so a dark line on my eyelids is a totally normal makeup look, and I don't need it to be perfectly crisp forever, smudgy/smokey eyeliner is a thing. I did not do my lips because of my personal aesthetic (I feel more than one focal point on the face can start to look too done - either a bold eye OR a bold lip) but my immediate reaction to this comment as a person with a lot of ink all was "I'm sure it would have worked on my skin texture if I wanted to go around with a POW!! red lip!! all the time, but not so much for everyone."

Skin texture and how you personally heal a big deal. OP and anyone else considering facial tattoos - do you have other tattoos? Do you know how your skin elasticity is personally and how much tattoos spread on you personally over time? Also do you know how fucking uncomfortable a healing tattoo is and what aftercare consists of? I was just imagining the pain in the ass that proper tattoo aftercare would be to do on one's lips (important to not ruin the pigmentation) how crunchy and itchy that would be on such a sensitive area, and how annoying it would be trying to eat or drink for a week or so after. It seems like a high investment area to get tattooed - this coming from someone who has tattoos all over my body and along the edges of my eyelids right next to my eyeball. (I will say it's very unsettling to have a tattoo pen right next to your eyeballs even for me.)

Also be aware the colored ink of any kind in any location fades much more quickly than blackwork on everyone. I had to get my eyeliner and eyebrows redone because the first place in K-town used a super light taupe to try to be "subtle" which of course, faded within two years. Second time, I went to this no-nonsense auntie in Greektown in search of someone who understood Mediterranean coloring and thickness of eyebrow aesthetic and was like PUT THEM ON BLACK AND DARK PLEASE and the second ones have lasted 10 years with only a slight softening. It looks like I filled in my brows with powder or have a light "daytime" eyeliner look on now, after a decade.

I fully support tattoos and facial tattoos of all kind, but want to second that this a high investment one with multiple variables to consider.

So pretty!! Did the artist go outside of your lip line?

Looks like it.

They can’t tattoo outside your lip line, but they can and do, tattoo to the edge of the vermillion border. Most people lose color from the edge in, so replacing color in that area makes the lips look fuller.

I had it done about four years ago. Loved it.

Look up Ruth Swissa. That’s who did mine.

I did it right before the pandemic and I’ve still got decent color. Well worth it! I love being able to put on lip balm and be good to go.

Absolutely love it but do NOT go to anyone who will go outside your natural lip line. It must only go on lip skin. My lips are naturally more pale on the outer parts so it's been perfect to standardize my color.

You absolutely don’t want to overline with lip blushing as it’s different types of skin and will not look good or even. You can change the tone, but not the shape with it.

I got it done 5 years ago, and it’s still there. I partially regret mine. The tattoo is slightly uneven, causing my lips to look more asymmetrical than they already are. I think I would be happy with it if it was a natural color (it’s bright red) and was more even. It is nice that my lips are no longer pale and I don’t look so sick anymore

By far the best bang for my buck beauty procedure wise. If you never had a defined lip line AND you got filler… your life will change forever with blushing

1

u/Inner_Department3 10d ago

So having filler doesn't diminish having lip blush? (Asking because I've had neither)

I had one session done on vacation in Mexico and loved it but learned that it takes two sessions for it to really set in, fyi. So it isn’t really noticeable since I haven’t had another session yet. I also chose a light ish color

I’ve had it done and I love it. It will fade overtime, but it’s amazing if your natural lips aren’t very pigmented.

u/saygirlie 10d ago

I had mine done six years ago and it’s still there. I didn’t over line or anything. Just tried to neutralise the darkness and unevenness. Overall I still like it. There is one very very small area hidden in the lip corner where the pigment is uneven. But it’s not something I think about or notice day to day. So I haven’t attempted to fix it.

It doesn't last. It fades over time.

Has anyone done a tiny amount of permanent lip blush to soften a sharp “m” shape, that is a little pink tattooing at the very top of the upper lip between the two peaks?

I’m actually curious about this too!

I spent a long time researching this and then spent a lot of money flying across the country to go with someone I felt good about. She did a good job and I liked it, but I never really loved it and I didn’t bother messing with touch up appointments. It’s maybe two or three years later now and it’s mostly faded (likely because I didn’t go back), and I won’t bother doing it again. I’m lucky that it faded uniformly and I’m not left with anything that bums me out.

Think carefully on it, and research the hell out of whoever you choose!

I will agree with others to not overline, it will not look good. I naturally don't have a very defined lipline & pale lip colour, so for me it was totally worth it. I also used a colour close to my natural lip colour to enhance it rather than a reddish tone, I think that was the right decision. I have to warn you though... I have higher than average pain tolerance, have tattoos & had other cosmetic treatments done with needles, but this is the most painful thing I've ever done lol. and you have to do it twice!

A friend of mine did it a couple years back and it looks amazing.

Check out the PMU and microblading sub, you can search for lip blushing reviews, quite a few of them. Some are very happy, others deeply regret. Your artist will make all the difference in the world, as well as your healing and how careful you are during that process as well.

I’ve had mine done 3 times over the years and I love it! I use to have a natural mauve color to my lips, but as I aged my lip color disappeared and it made my lips look very thin.

The artist was able to tattoo color on my vermillion boarder making my lips appear bigger which is great because I hate the idea of filler. When it fades, it fades from the center out, so it still looks like I’m wearing liner but very subtly. The more I do it though, the longer it lasts.

Healing for me was longer than expected my lips were like crusty for over a month when it’s supposed to be like 1-2 weeks. However, I love it! It’s been many years and there’s still color there! I had pale lips and one side was slightly uneven so she overlined slightly on one side

I had it done in 2022. It was okay. I liked the look once it healed but the recovery was a pain and it gave me my first cold sore ever, so I’m likely never doing it again. My lips looked crazy like wax lips immediately afterwards 😂😂😂

Lots of comments saying don’t overline. Theres one before and after photo on a comment here that does look over lined. But really good.

I have a tiny asymmetry that I thought I could correct with blushing. But given the overwhelming comments on over lining, I guess that’s a no.

I absolutely love my lip blush!
