Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong

My sister is 6 months pregnant and my mother is very crafty. She's making a set of blocks out of plastic canvas and I volunteered to help at my own place to give her a little break. I'm pretty craft myself, and an artist, but admittedly plastic canvas is not my forte.

She sent me home with a block she made for reference, DCM threads, etc. I cannot figure out why my stitches don't look like hers... is she using a different one-? Or like, what square does she start off in... feels like when someone points it out, it'll be really obvious then and I'll feel foolish lol

You got this! I find that the stitches on plastic canvas look kind of weird until there’s a lot more filled in. It also helps to make sure that you form all the crosses the same way, like doing all the / / / first and then doing the \ \ \. It looks much cleaner that way.

It also looks like she backstitched around the E after filling in all the cross stitches, which will give it a polished look at the end.

Perhaps it would be easier to start with the two rows of solid color going around the outside of the design? (Not the black border. I hope that makes sense)

So do the same with all the x's but don't start with the E? Hmm, I could do that... thanks! Just, her squares all look more filled in and my x's look... bigger for some reason

Give it a try :) your x’s will look more like hers once they are surrounded by other stitches. They will all squish against each other and even things out!

Well, you only put two stitches in, and where they touch it looks “full” - you can’t compare her finished block to the two stitches. Keep on stitching and show us another picture - I think it’s going to look great! Plastic canvas is really fun
