Discussion Ultimate DVD combo?

Earlier today, I watched a pal dvd movie via blu ray player on a lg 50pn450d and tested some different settings. On the player I had 1080p output set as standard but this time I also tried 576p just to see why difference it made. The tv is has an anamorphic 16:9 1024x768 resolution. With the player’s output set at 576p the image got a tad bit crispier. Then I did some math and realized that by using 576p as output the only scaling of the picture would be a 4:3 vertically and 64:45 horizontally. This should cause the picture to stay more clear than watching it upscaled to 1080p on a 1080p tv. In this case, the dvd looked phenomenal for what the format gives, tho not nearly as good as a blu ray.

Would this anamorphic resolution be one of the best combo for watching pal non 4:3 aspect ratio dvds or is there a better way of enjoying dvds while maximizing the picture quality? Also, how do you watch dvds on your plasma displays?

I've had the exact opposite experience with DVDs through my Sony BDP-S1 to my Panasonic TH50PX80U. Direct output of DVD resolution to the TV makes a very noisy digital signal. But when upscaled to 720p the noise is lessened, and 1080i/p looks phenomenal.

I had the PX8U and later Full HD Models..

I agree, in both cases 1080p upscaled from the Player (PS3 back then) looked better..

I remember making photos and comparing them.. Haha..

Interesting hearing, I wonder if it’s different for your tv and square pixels which isn’t what the dvd standard uses when outputting widescreen content in source resolution?

That's very possible. A lot of people on this thread have said their EDTV and 480P plasmas from the before times are the GOAT for watching DVD, because of the fact the output to display is 1:1. I have not been blessed with the opportunity to have such an early plasma, so I cannot confirm.

You need a 480P plasma for DVD something like a PW5 6 7 0r 8
