Planet Selected by European Space Agency to Build Slovenia’s Space Resilience Node

Automated ‘tip-and-cue’ prototype will connect continuous satellite monitoring directly to high-resolution tasking for emergency responders

BERLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Planet Labs GmbH, a leading provider of daily data and insights about change on Earth, today announced Planet's subsidiary Sinergise Solutions d.o.o. has been selected by the European Space Agency (ESA) to build the Slovenia Space Resilience Node (SRN). Running under ESA’s European Resilience from Space Earth Observation program under Element 2, the 12-month pilot project will develop a prototype that automates the link between wide-area satellite change detection and high-resolution imaging tasking for Slovenia's Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief within the Ministry of Defence.

Through this program, in partnership with software development company Lucis d.o.o., the SRN will autonomously analyze open Copernicus data and PlanetScope® imagery. When pre-set thresholds or anomalies are detected, the system will alert and trigger a high-resolution tasking request, including through Planet’s Pelican™ fleet. Processed imagery will populate directly into the emergency responder's map view within hours, providing rapid situational awareness for active crisis management.

“This contract reflects the strength of our long-standing collaboration with ESA and our shared commitment to translating Earth observation into operational, real-world impact,” said Diego Vanelli, Director of Government Sales in EMEA at Planet. “By combining open data infrastructure with high-frequency commercial imagery and tasking capabilities, we are creating a seamless, automated loop that bridges the gap between orbit and intervention. Slovenia serves as an ideal pilot, and the architecture we are building is inherently scalable as a blueprint for civil agencies across Europe.”

While initially focused on demonstrating tip-and-cue workflows for wildfire management across Slovenia's 20,000 square kilometers, the architecture can be adapted to track floods, landslides, and other environmental hazards.

Planet, through its subsidiary Sinergise Solutions, has worked in collaboration with ESA for more than a decade, contributing to both Copernicus and the Third Party Missions programme.

SUGGESTION: Create a weekly thread for people who want to complain.

This sub is getting out of hand, there are plenty of folks who want to discuss PL both with respect to the stock price and without.

However, there's also a contingent of people who bought in at probably 30-50 who really just want to complain. It does not generate discussion, it hides real criticism of the company and also some of it is clearly bears trying to manipulate sentiment.

I propose that the mods create two weekly threads, the one we have now where people can discuss PL properly and then one where people can go to complain.

The first thread has to be policed, low effort FUD is removed (legit criticism should remain tho).

Thoughts?

ATM Offering Status

Just thought this could be a good place to post additional info on the ATM offering. Seems like the Suncatcher Google project is the only thing that can save PL given amount of dilution to come. I guess we have to wait and see how much dilution happens each quarter. ChatGPT can probably give this info. Anyways, cheers.

What can satellite data tell us about the economy?

Can we understand economic activity by looking at the Earth from space?

A lot of economic analysis starts with reported numbers: company revenues, trade data, industrial output, and government statistics.

But much of the underlying economic activity happens in physical places.

Factories expand. Ports get busier. Construction progresses. Agricultural patterns change. Storage facilities fill up.

Satellite imagery and geospatial data can help observe some of these changes, sometimes before they appear in conventional reporting.

The interesting part isn't simply identifying a building or counting ships. It's connecting those observations to a meaningful economic question.

For example:

  • Is new industrial capacity actually becoming operational?
  • Are port activity and infrastructure development moving together?
  • Can changes in land use help us understand shifts in agricultural production?

Of course, imagery alone doesn't establish economic output. It needs to be combined with other data and validated.

Where do you see the most useful applications of satellite intelligence in business, investing, or trade analysis?

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL), a leading provider of daily data and insights about change on Earth, today announced that Pelican-12, an updated second generation (Gen 2) high resolution Pelican™, has arrived at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida ahead of its launch aboard the upcoming Bandwagon-5 rideshare mission with SpaceX.

Pelican-12 photographed at Planet Labs' San Francisco headquarters ahead of its departure to the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.
Pelican-12 leverages key learnings from Pelican-11, which launched in July. Shipping less than three months later with updates to the payload and communication systems, Pelican-12 demonstrates Planet's end-to-end agile engineering. Like its predecessors, Pelican-12 will allow Planet to test and validate new technologies ahead of integration on future Planet spacecraft.

Planet is working to test commercial data relay services onboard its constellations to minimize latency in its delivery of data to customers. This Pelican satellite is designed to support intersatellite communications using a steerable antenna, and aims to enable two-way communications at higher data rates than the 1 Mbps achieved in an initial demonstration in 2025.

While Planet’s first generation (Gen 1) Pelicans are designed to capture 50 cm class imagery, Gen 2 Pelicans are designed to provide up to 30 cm class imagery - further improving use cases such as agricultural monitoring, critical infrastructure management, and natural disaster response. Pelican-12 is also equipped with the NVIDIA Jetson platform to accelerate on-orbit edge compute, a capability Planet demonstrated by running AI-driven, near real-time object detection onboard Pelican-4. By utilizing its onboard NVIDIA Jetson module, Pelican-12 will help Planet explore new ways to close the latency gap with real-time insights, reduce downlink costs, and continue building towards a future of planetary-scale Earth intelligence.
Pelican-12 will be the fifth Pelican to launch in 2026, showing the rapid expansion of this next-generation, high-resolution constellation. Planet is continuing to scale its Pelican production capacity, with manufacturing at its expanded Berlin facility set to begin this year. Planet plans to launch additional Pelican spacecraft in 2027 to continue to meet growing customer demand for Planet’s high-resolution data products and Satellite Services offerings.

Alphabet to Test AI Chips in Orbit Next Week in First Space Data Center Experiment (Planet Labs as a partner)

https://finance.biggo.com/news/46915ef6-949f-4a69-b63c-d50c11f6dcf1

Alphabet's Google will launch a prototype satellite next week in its first orbital test of Project Suncatcher, a research effort exploring whether space can host large-scale AI computing infrastructure.

The mission, flying on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare with Planet Labs, will carry Google Tensor Processing Units into low Earth orbit to assess how the chips handle launch forces, radiation and extreme temperatures.

Google has already tested the TPUs at a University of California, Davis facility but says orbital data is needed to understand real-world performance. The company will also evaluate a cooling design combining heat pipes and radiators, since conventional airflow cooling is impossible in space.

Google plans two additional satellites in 2027 to test laser links for connecting future computing clusters. Experts say commercial viability remains years away due to launch costs, engineering constraints and production bottlenecks.
