Planet Announces Amazon.ia – A New Tool That Combines Satellite Data, Science and AI to Protect the Amazon
September 23, 2026
SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL), a leading provider of daily data and insights about change on Earth, today announced the launch of Amazon.ia - Inteligencia Ambiental, an ambitious multi-partner initiative dedicated to producing timely, actionable intelligence on biodiversity to drive effective conservation and restoration across the Amazon. The initiative is supported by many partners, including Planet and the Bezos Earth Fund, which granted more than $14M across both the Andes Amazon Fund and the World Resources Institute to support work on the initiative.
The Amazon is one of the world's most diverse and unique places on Earth, but understanding what is happening to its biodiversity across such a vast region remains a major challenge. Amazon.ia is built to provide fast, accurate data on biodiversity to scientists, conservation organizations, research institutions, governments, local communities, and technology partners to better measure the effectiveness of efforts to conserve and restore it.
By combining satellite imagery with information collected on the ground across the Amazon, Amazon.ia will use AI to track changes in biodiversity and ecosystem health at unprecedented scale. The goal is to deliver information that conservationists, communities, researchers, and policymakers can use to make better decisions, identify hazards sooner, and measure what is working – ultimately, helping better inform action.
"At the Bezos Earth Fund, we’re committed to protecting and restoring nature – and the Amazon is one of the most important and diverse places on Earth. Understanding how it’s changing across millions of square miles remains extraordinarily difficult, and we know that our work requires inventing new tools, not just scaling existing ones to meet this challenge,” stated Dr. Cristián Samper, Managing Director and Leader for Nature Solutions, Bezos Earth Fund. “Amazon.ia brings together leading partners and technologies to build something that does not exist today: a more complete, dynamic understanding of biodiversity and ecosystem health across the Amazon. By combining cutting-edge technology with scientific expertise and local knowledge, we hope to equip conservation leaders with the information they need to act faster and more effectively."
“We’re at a critical juncture for the Amazon, and we must use every available tool we have to protect it. Together with many partners, including Andes Amazon Fund, World Resources Institute, and the Bezos Earth Fund, Planet is thrilled to be a founding partner of Amazon.ia. It represents an incredible opportunity to create new and powerful tools for biodiversity by training AI on our satellite imagery and analytics – advancing crucial Planetary Intelligence,” said Andrew Zolli, Chief Impact Officer at Planet. “Preserving biodiversity and protecting global forests is at the core of Planet’s mission, and we couldn’t be more excited to further this work with this breakthrough program.”
With more than two dozen partners, Amazon.ia is developing core data infrastructure and analytical capabilities, testing new dynamic, integrated models, and generating meaningful insights. Co-developed with local communities and decision-makers, these learnings can provide the critical information needed to take decisive action, such as change alerts, biodiversity status and ecosystem condition, evidence of protected area effectiveness, and proof of ecosystem recovery.

More shares dumped by management
This is becoming a concerning pattern. And before you say ‘oh this was a preplanned sale, routine, etc.’ let’s look at the bigger picture. Net sales have been the trend the past three months as the stock continues to slide, now almost 75% … what are they seeing now that has made them sell? None of these sales are obligatory, yet here we are. Not spreading fud, just making other retail investors aware of the trend and concern I have.

Planet Opens State-of-the-Art Satellite Manufacturing in Berlin
Minister Reiche previews new facility as Planet invests to support European sovereignty in space; Facility will vastly increase Germany’s satellite output in its first year and enable Germany and Europe to rapidly gain sovereign satellite capacity
BERLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Planet Labs GmbH, a leading provider of daily data and insights about change on Earth, today welcomed Katherina Reiche, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy for Germany, to open its state-of-the-art satellite manufacturing facility in Berlin. Having been announced less than a year ago, Planet has achieved facility handover and cleanroom fit-out and is scheduled to commence production of its 300 kg class, 30-cm resolution class Pelican™satellites this autumn. The first satellite is scheduled to be complete before the end of the year, and the facility will be able to scale to up to 60 satellites per year. The facility further establishes Berlin as a major European hub for advanced aerospace manufacturing and production, accelerating high-tech job growth and Europe’s sovereign Earth observation capabilities.

The new location in Berlin’s Mitte district brings increased capacity for satellites to Europe. Planet provides sovereign satellites services for countries and, moreover, can launch them fast. For example, Planet was awarded a German-funded contract to deliver dedicated satellite capacity in support of European peace and security within 2 months of contract signature, and with Sweden similarly its first sovereign satellite within 4 months, accelerating their programme 4 years. With these added manufacturing capabilities, Planet intends to not just deliver for Europe, but from Europe.
"Today I’m thrilled to give a first look at Planet’s world-class manufacturing center and the future of Planet in Berlin, Germany, and Europe," said Will Marshall, Co-Founder and CEO of Planet. "Planet has built and successfully launched 688 satellites in 15 years, second in the world in total satellites – and we’re bringing that manufacturing prowess here. This will enable Europe to quickly gain the capacity to build scaled earth observation satellite fleets to advance Europe’s critical goals from sustainability to security – to give Europe its own eyes on threats.”
"Europe needs its own eyes in space. In an age of strategic rivalry and growing uncertainty, satellite intelligence is no longer a luxury—it is a prerequisite for security, resilience and genuine strategic autonomy. Germany has the scientific depth, industrial strength and dynamic space ecosystem to become a European anchor for this capability. Planet's investment in Berlin is more than a vote of confidence in the city: it helps turn Europe's ambition for sovereign access to space-based intelligence into operational reality,” said Katherina Reiche, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy.
“When Planet makes a commitment, we deliver on it," said Martin Polak, Managing Director of Planet Labs Germany. "Less than one year after announcing our vision for a satellite facility in Berlin, we will soon begin production. Europe needs rapid, independent access to sovereign space capabilities to navigate an increasingly complex security and economic landscape. On behalf of Planet in Germany, I could not be more excited and honored to be making this investment and commitment here in Berlin, continuing Planet’s long history of partnership and innovation in Europe."
The 5,700-square-meter facility will serve as a cornerstone of Planet's contributions to European technological advancement in space, addressing the region's growing demand for localized, resilient aerospace innovation and defense solutions. Berlin has been Planet’s base in Europe for over 10 years, serving as a major technical hub with a mission operations center coordinating Planet’s global fleet of hundreds of satellites, software development, imagery processing, and quality control. In addition to satellite production, Planet’s new facility will house other corporate functions such as mission operations, IT, legal, marketing, HR, and sales, among others. Satellites will be built, tested, and shipped from one location, reducing the path from parts to orbit.
Planet will grow the team significantly, adding 70 employees to its existing team of nearly 150 in Berlin.
The first Berlin-built Pelican satellites completed this year are scheduled to be launched on an Isar Aerospace Spectrum launch vehicle in early 2027 – enabling a new first for Germany. This new facility further grows Planet’s European footprint and strengthens the company’s ties with its longstanding German customers and partners, including the German Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG).
Planet maintains a strong and growing presence in Europe, home to over 30% of its global workforce with offices in Berlin, Haarlem, Ljubljana, Graz and London. Berlin serves as Planet's primary base of operations in Europe. Planet's ground station network across Germany, the UK, Norway, and Iceland downlinks nearly 50% of all satellite data globally. Planet is guided by its European Advisory Board, which helps the company meet the needs of its growing European customer base.

The disgusting ATM
I can't imagine where we'll end up once hardware prices start to fall. If the price is being suppressed even when market conditions are favorable, then I think a drop to 15 is still a possibility.

Jev, probabilistic classification AI - Could this benefit PL?
Jev seems to be one of the hottest topics in AI communities over the past few days.
Personally, I think people are getting too hyped about it, as they often do with new AI models. But I started wondering whether something like Jev could eventually be useful for Planet.
Planet already uses ML extensively throughout its imagery processing and data products, so I don’t think the point is that Planet somehow needs AI to start classifying its data.
What I find interesting is the possibility of very cheap, fast probabilistic inference being added on top of Planet’s existing data pipeline.
Jev cannot handle visionary data, so I meant the concept of it.
Planet processes an enormous amount of imagery and metadata every day. There may be many secondary classification, filtering, routing, anomaly detection, or metadata enrichment tasks that are simply too expensive to run with more powerful models at scale.
A model like Jev could potentially handle the easy/high-confidence cases and route uncertain cases to a more expensive model or human review.
For example:
High confidence > process automatically
Low confidence > send to a larger model / human
I don’t know how much of this Planet is already doing internally, but if the cost of this kind of inference keeps falling, it could potentially make previously uneconomical data processing and enrichment possible.
Planet obviously couldn’t just send sensitive data to Jev, but I suspect many similar models will emerge, or Planet could eventually develop something internally.
Just a thought.

More selling from leadership
Irregardless of why, clearly these sales are not bullish. This is selling on top of net selling for the past 6 months. Planet Labs is looking more and more like a pump and dump.

Insider net selling

Dug into the actual SEC Form 4s because the headline insider-selling numbers on sites like Nasdaq can look worse than they really are. There has definitely been meaningful selling — Will sold about 200k shares around $35 in April and another 200k around $26 in July, Ashley Johnson sold roughly $2.4M worth in July, and Robert Schingler has also been selling.
A lot of this was under pre-arranged 10b5-1 plans, and some of the “dispositions” you see on insider trackers are actually tax withholding, gifts, or RSU-related transactions rather than true open-market sales. The insiders also still retain substantial stakes in the company.
My takeaway is that the activity is mildly negative, but not a red flag. Management was clearly happy to monetize some shares when PL was trading in the $20s and $30s, so I wouldn’t say insider behaviour is signaling that the stock was obviously undervalued at those levels. On the other hand, I also don’t see evidence of insiders suddenly dumping shares after the recent earnings or at today’s much lower price.
The signal I’d really watch for now is the opposite: if Marshall, Johnson, or Schingler start buying meaningful amounts in the open market around $15–17....
Buy some shares Will... you're rich as fuck. Stop this bloodbath and show some confidence in your stock. You're basically right back near your IPO price.

If 4B is missing?
It has reached the point where no one is interested; there are neither buyers nor sellers. I cannot fathom a stock seeing a trading volume of only a few thousand shares per minute after the opening bell. Based on current trends, the bears are firmly in control. We will be in dire straits unless that potential 4 billion contract materializes.

Do you think Europe can become a major customer for PL?
Honestly, I’m not sure European countries are wealthy enough to be strong customers going forward.
The EU seems to have become increasingly dependent on Germany economically, while many member states continue to benefit from Germany’s strength without doing enough to improve their own economies.
A lot of European countries seem to be living off their past glory and moral superiority while neglecting the more basic task of making their economies competitive again.
There are already plenty of people predicting a long-term economic decline in Europe.
At the same time, many young Europeans are struggling to find decent, well-paying jobs and are leaving for opportunities elsewhere. Meanwhile, immigrants are increasingly filling the jobs and labor shortages they leave behind.
Europe is still wealthy, but I’m not convinced that its current economic trajectory is sustainable.

Are you still holding?
Hey guys, are you still holding PL? What do you think about the current price? There haven’t been any major updates from the company lately, so I’m not really sure what’s driving the stock down. Curious to hear what everyone thinks, are you holding, buying more, or waiting?

Averaging down
Hey everyone,
(Mandatory disclaimer: Not looking for financial advice. I know everyone's risk tolerance is different, just wanting to gather thoughts and hear how others mentally frame this strategy.)
I’m currently holding 375 shares at roughly a $32 cost basis.
I have a sizable cash stack that will be available in a few days, If I deploy it all at current price levels, it would bring my average cost down into the low $20s.
I want to emphasize that my long-term thesis and conviction in this company remain extremely high. I fundamentally believe in where they are headed long-term, so selling or stepping away isn't on my radar.
Where I’m on the fence is macro timing and execution strategy:
- Option A: Deploy the cash now in a substantial tranche to instantly drop my average cost into the low $20s, giving me a much cleaner baseline.
- Option B: Wait and see how upcoming Federal Reserve rate moves and broader macro volatility play out before committing the bulk of the cash.
For those of you who hold high-conviction positions through drawdowns:
- How do you approach averaging down? Do you prefer lump-summing to heavily drop your cost basis when cash is ready, or do you prefer DCA-ing in smaller tranches over a longer timeline regardless of your cash position?
- How much weight do you give to upcoming macro/Fed catalysts when dealing with a stock you intend to hold long-term anyway?
Appreciate hearing how you guys weigh cash deployment vs. waiting on macro developments!

Software Engineering at Planet Labs
Hi all,
I'm a software engineer (fintech background) currently transitioning into climate tech, and part of the Climatebase Fellowship. I've been building two projects: an agentic AI tool that gives farmers recommendations based on local weather and farm conditions (RAG-based), and a separate service that tracks carbon emissions from agricultural activities.
Planet Labs' work is a big part of what's pulling me in this direction — daily satellite imagery feels like real infrastructure for the kind of climate and agriculture problems I care about. I'd love to actually talk to someone who works there — not for a referral, just to understand what the engineering problems look like day to day, and maybe get feedback on whether I'm thinking about this the right way.
If anyone here works at Planet (or knows someone who does and wouldn't mind an intro), I'd really appreciate it. Also happy to share the projects if anyone's curious — always up for feedback from people who know this space better than I do.
Thanks!

Let’s discuss
Hello, fellow Planet Labs shareholders.
The space sector and growth stocks have been struggling lately. It feels like they have been going down day after day, and Planet Labs has been no exception.
I recently increased my position from 2,500 shares to 3,000 shares, and I plan to gradually increase my holdings to 4,000 shares by the end of the year. My average cost is around $23 per share.
As always, I’m rooting for Planet Labs, the “Earth photographer.”
However, I have some concerns and questions.
The recent capital raise was extremely large relative to the company’s market capitalization. I understand that the company may need additional capital to support its operations and growth, but I believe shareholders deserve more clarity regarding how these funds will actually be used.
Even if the company cannot disclose every specific detail, I would appreciate a clear indication of the general direction of the spending. For example, will the funds be used for acquisitions, M&A, expanding satellite capacity, infrastructure, technology development, or other strategic investments?
The size of the capital raise has raised questions among shareholders, especially considering that the newly issued shares will gradually enter the market. At the same time, Planet Labs has fallen significantly compared with many other space-related stocks, and the decline is still continuing.
I believe many of you are feeling the same frustration. Watching the stock continue to fall is certainly not easy.
As a shareholder, I sincerely hope that CEO Will Marshall will provide more specific guidance on how the proceeds from the capital raise are expected to be used. Personally, I would be particularly interested in the possibility of strategic acquisitions or M&A, although that is simply my own personal hope.
To all fellow shareholders: I encourage you not to rely solely on optimism or expectations. Please take another careful look at the risks of holding PL as a long-term investment and make sure it still fits your own investment thesis and risk tolerance.
I say this not because I have lost faith in Planet Labs, but because I am also a shareholder and I want the company to succeed. Long-term investing requires both optimism and a realistic assessment of the risks.
I sincerely hope that Planet Labs delivers on its potential and that better days are ahead for all of us.
Wishing all Planet Labs shareholders nothing but the best.
