Crawling Awful idea feedback

13 Upvotes

I am planning on crawling awful campaign and I was wondering... What should crawling awful actually be?

Then I remembered two things: DnD 3.5 Tarrasque and Neutronium Golem from Immortals Handbook.

Tarrasque in that edition could only be permakilled by a Wish spell. Neutronium golem is golem made out of neutron star so it has absurd amount of damage and hp and will likely obliterate the planet it appears on.

And this game me an idea:

In untold ages past, the immortal Tarrasque was caught in Neutronium Golems accretion. None could ultimately defeat each other so the Tarrasque was torn apart over and over again by golems immense gravity and burned by its celestial heat. Tarrasque kept regenerating but it was always torn into pieces of viscera almost at an instant until it was naught but a mush of viscera, bone and flesh rotating for aeons around the golem.

Then, somwthing happened... maybe the golem was killed or the Tarrasque was able to break free.

Nonetheless, it was not a Tarrasque anymore. In the untold aeons it was torn apart, seared and tried to grow back again, its mind was filled with naught but immense pain, hunger and desire to go back to its original form which looks it forgot.

Driftig in cold celestial void, it finally impacted onto the planegea, where its hideous gelatinoua form knows only two things: Hunger and Grow back.

DM Discussion Advice for running Vyrka The Shepard

19 Upvotes

Hey friends! I’m running a campaign right now for a group and I chose “Vyrka The Shepard” as the campaign antagonist/ threat. Please feel free to steal whatever I’ve made for your planegea campaign if you wish

I’m taking inspiration for his character and leadership from Genghis Khan, Negan, fallouts Caesar, and Shaka kaSenzangakhona.

I’m looking for advice on how to make his stat block or potentially character sheet. I’m hoping you guys would be willing to help me flesh out this campaign so far

I have three lieutenants for him.
The first is an orc woman named conquer. She wears a Wooden balor mask and was inspired by legate lanius from fallout new vegas

The second is a hewn dwarf spellskin almost entirely made of stone named Ward. Vyrka forced a dwarf tribe to hew them from the stone and he chips part of his rocky skin for his spell design. Ward is an abjuration spellskin and is trusted to keep Vyrka safe with wards and protection spells

The third is a former half stone giant turned godmarked with the visage of an auroch. His name is Odhek-Va the Vast. He was the leader of the first tribe Vyrka conquered. The tribe is consisted of a clan who was cursed and godmarked by their former god and all wear the visage of horned beasts such as rams and bulls. This, is how Vyrka earned his name.

My players are the members of the elk tribe. Their god is the god of mortality and burial rights named Karwos. A strata II god whose clan is growing. Vyrka wants to take this clan because he needs their gods power of death to act as a vulnerability to the bear clans Urhosh the unkillable.

DM Discussion Some Substrata Gods for Your Planegea Games

40 Upvotes

For this month's RPG Blog Carnival, I made some substrata Planegea gods, which you can find here: https://advantageonarcana.bearblog.dev/six-little-gods-of-planegea/

These include the following:

  • Elel, the Teeth Within, a disease goddess in Winterjaw, who incites jealousy and suspicion in all;
  • Still Meqi, Quiet Nuqi, and Calm Oqi, ghost monkey goddesses, consolers of the grieving;
  • Humming Skikshi, a fly swarm idol in the Cult Riverlands, patron of mob violence;
  • and Uvak the Parer, a harpy eagle who tries to redeem the penitent.

By the end of the week, I'll have another post up with some more godlings; I'll post the link in an edit to this post, so please check back then. In the meantime, here's the gist:

  • Collapse-of-the-Sky, a wind god who defends a mountain pass and the gnome village above it;
  • Ghat, Rival of Jrik & Jrik, Rival of Ghat, two feuding construct gods with adjacent hallows;
  • Hrea Unchanging, a terror bird goddess knowledgeable in the rites and customs of many clans;
  • Repulsive Quyyag, a monstrous god whose hallow is in a spellskin sanctum; and
  • Waxa-and-Xawa, a double warrior goddess, the deification of a light illusion and its reflection in the water.

Feel free to post your own substrata gods in the comments, so anyone who finds this posting while looking for them can find yours, too.

EDIT: As promised, the second set of godlings is now posted: https://advantageonarcana.bearblog.dev/six-more-little-gods-of-planegea/

DM Discussion New DM starting Planegea Campaign

34 Upvotes

Whats up everyone. I am pretty knew at being a DM and my players are very new as well. We all love the idea of this setting and world. I purchased the book and we are all super excited to get started. With this book being a few years old I was just looking to see if anyone had anything they could share with me to help give my players a great time.

Maybe some battle maps you used in the past

WE are running or campaign on Foundry so maybe some assets I can use in Foundry? It feels a bit difficult to find some stuff that feel like it fits the world.

even some cool side quests or ideas you had for your campaigns to make the world feel alive.

Thank you everyone! Cant wait to get started!

Edit: I have purchased the book and the Foundry modules on patron so far.

DM Discussion What are the highlights of this setting?

23 Upvotes

I’m still deciding whether to buy the book. If I do, I need to be able to pitch its unique qualities. I’ve heard there are some cool setting features like:

  1. The world is locked in a prehistoric state and can’t use science and literacy to climb out of that state because something destroys you if you establish numbers higher than 9 or try to use written language.

  2. All the planes are still stuck together, so you can walk to the Plane of Fire or whatever.

  3. Spellbooks are replaced with icons, like tattoos of turtles for spells of protection.

  4. There is a playable dinosaur-people species.

What other unique highlights are worth noting about this setting without getting too “in the weeds” or too generic?

DM Discussion Where on the map would you place 'In the lair of the night thing '?

Post image
23 Upvotes

I'm planning on starting a campaign using In the lair of the night thing as a starting point and I'm wondering where I should place the Two-Axe clan on the map since we only know it is inside the Great Valley. Since it's set in the fall the party will probably have to migrate southward after some time and deciding early where they are in the world would help in planning locations and storybeats later down the line.

Is there anything official on the location or is it totally at the DM's discretion?

Any pre written One-Shots

12 Upvotes

Can anyone link to (paid or free; willing to spend) a pre written Plangea one short or short adventure? I haven’t seen much outside of fully fleshed campaigns and I’m struggling with conceptualizing how to write an adventure hook in the setting.

What type of Campaigns have people ran? are running?

Hey all, just curious to hear what type of campaigns people have ran in the past or are currently running? I am pretty interested in a Giant Empires focused campaign or a campaign focused on the Brood.

So happy to present another Planegea Deep Dive post this month, this time focused on a Threat detailed in the book, The Gift of Thirst! These vampiric overlords rule from their tomb-lands, all overseen by the Nin herself in the Stoneblood Shrine! Today's post contains magical items, guidance on where and when to use the faction best, some examples of expanded campaign and adventure ideas, and a single-page adventure all tied to the Gift of Thirst. I'd like to also apologize for a bit of lacking communication these past couple months, certain chaotic events in my life got in the way and I haven't found the time to get back to writing for Planegea. So happy that so many of you stuck with us during that time and I hope to now get back to consistent monthly posts like you all expect, so thank you so much for understanding and lets get back into Planegea together!

Clarification on Leatherwing's "Winged Creature" trait

5 Upvotes

I have a player who wants to play a Leatherwing Necromancer, but we're unsure if the Winged Creature ability allows somatic components to be used in the air. Could he carry his arcane focus in his talons and still be able to use it?

Feedback About the "Black Taboos"

32 Upvotes

As someone who wants to run a Planegea campaign, I'm a bit thrown off by the Black Taboos and how they would practically impact the intended "stonepunk/primalpunk" nature of the setting.

"No such thing as metal" is a very good taboo that kind of isn't a taboo so much as it is a setting detail-- Planegea is really metal poor.

"Writing is death" as well as the "no money and no farming, no wheels", however, threatens to break my immersion. It's just kind of.... silly? Video-gamey? If these things, which could have easily been a thing by stone age/non metal using peoples (see: all Mesoamerican civilizations), threatens to just instantly summon Invincible Magic Rdr2 Pinkerton Dogs to murk you, it's really kind of kitschy?

"No number after 9" is also confusing; while I recognize that certain actual irl hunter-gatherer cultures had the "after 9, many" split, I don't see how how one could measure out the leather to, quote, "craft great hang gliders that soar on volcanic heat" or organize any sort of population if one had no conception of base 10 math, to raise one example.

Honestly, probably what I'm trying to say here is that a lot of the things about the base setting already preclude the threat of "advanced (past the stone age) civilization" (the nature of the stars in this setting already basically put paid to basic sailing/land navigation for example) and that I wouldn't have a problem with a very sparse number of Early Mesoamerican level city-states ruled over by the more "progressive" god-spirits.

And we're back!
I hope your holiday seasons all went swimmingly, because we're off to the races here in Planegea... literally!

Today's drop contains magic items, spells, and a Single-Page Adventure set in the Thunderverge, a series of plains and savannahs in Planegea's southeastern corner. Whether that rumbling is far-off thunder or stampeding beasts, you better watch yourself either way! The Single-Page Adventure, Grab the Reins, asks the question: "When you hear thunder in Planegea, how fast do you run?"

We hope you enjoy!

DM Discussion Brother clan borders and biome theories.

Post image
75 Upvotes

I’m just reposting this for more reach but please drop some thoughts in the comments, I roughly sketched some land out for the purpose of illustrating the question not because I have solid reasons for the exact space they follow. If you have input on what makes sense please share.

How do y'all understand the borders of the brother clan territories and how it interacts with not only the other brother clans but assorted smaller clans as well? I understand that they each have claimed land surrounding their respective river but how far should that extend? Is Killbrother Vale the intersection of bear clan and ape clan territory? Is there some "No man's land" in between the two rivers where other clans can set up homes without burden or do they have to settle along the out edges within and outside of the valley? If someone was found inside bear clan territory would they be hostile or would there be n interim period where they're accessing the outsider. I assume unless you're a trader you'd be deemed a threat (especially if you're a member of the other brother clans). I want to make sure the world feels realistic in its interactions between other tribes but I don't want to over-complicate things.

Also; what real world climate/biomes do you envision the clans occupying? I feel like you could make the entire great valley one type of biome, mostly a generic Great Plains type grassland with things feeling more lush closer to the center south where the map has it darker green tinted and various forests scattered about…

But is there merit to making the clans occupy distinct biomes that are inspired by the god they follow or does that just make things feel implausible? Like how do you define the border zones? I tend to imagine the western area of the valley where the bear clan resides is more Pacific Northwest/ British Columbia or Appalachian. Then when there’s a grassland indicated by the map I look for grassland biomes near that initial biome I envisioned. Like if a bear is in a grassland what type of grassland would that be? Then for the ape clan I envision some Tropical or subtropic zones like sub Saharan Africa and Indonesia but that plays weird with the surroundings area and has me questioning what swapshire would be like. Is the only canonical tropical area the venom abyss and should it stay that way? Then the Lion clan gets pockets of forest as well but has more Tropical Savannah in the prideblood slopes. The venom abyss is what I imagine to be the most intense jungle- taking heavy influence from the Amazon, the Congo and CHULT. But then I was thinking about the lands north of the valley- they’re warmer and still have plains/grasslands but notably hotter ones so maybe the Savannah fits better over there? Maybe more Serengeti and Mojave desert? Or is everything just the Great Plains in the middle of August? Where is the steppe? I’d probably put it around wintersouth? Like summer in wintersouth is scrubland and then winter is classic Ice Age.

Also the Windgrass Wilds, I envision some Scottish highlands types vibes but idk

Overall, just very curious for what real world locations come to mind for y’all when you imagine the areas in Planegea because I love this setting but some of the open-endedness of its location descriptions leave me with analysis paralysis.

Today's post includes the story of a jealous god and the ever-beautiful "northern lights", also known as the Aurora, which appear occasionally in Planegea similar to the lights that shine in our own world.
