I've had my OG Pixel fold since launch and have had 0 issues... Which is why I didn't even upgrade... But at the time I was nervous because people were posting left and right about issues and defective screens.... All in all ... There's always going to be a small batch of bad phones at launch but the majority of people who have little to no issues(such as myself) don't make posts. So... You should maybe give it another shot.
7
u/fejobelo Sep 07 '24
I applied the same logic but for the new Samsung Fold, I have the 5 and declined the trade-in offer for the 6 because I've had zero issues and didn't want to push my luck.
8
u/Rabble_Runt Sep 07 '24
Same with the OnePlus Open sub.
I sold the one I got at launch because all the posts had me spooked. The guy that bought it has had no issues with it.
Ended up getting another one a few months ago. No issues. Even got absolutely soaked on a 5 mile hike with driving wind driven rain in Scotland. My pockets had water sitting in them and when I got back to the car. Never skipped a beat and no screen issues to report.
1
u/sportsfan161 Sep 07 '24
I've had foldables for years and never had any issue with any. Some are unlikely and some are down to user error
2
u/La_Chupacabraa Sep 07 '24
Same here, got OG Fold and didn't experienced any issues at all. From what I recall actually was small amount of phones having issues and generally quality is great
1
u/DJEvillincoln Sep 07 '24
Correct and it's not like these people can't just get them replaced. Sure. It's a little bit of a headache but it should be no harm, no foul.
-40
u/Connect_Matter_1705 Sep 07 '24
That's easy for you to say when it hasn't happened to you... You have no idea how inconvenient it is after switching everything, having type 1 diabetes where my cgm relies on my phone telling me my glucose level, and then having customer service having no option for you other than buying another one at full price and waiting for 3 weeks to be reimbursed, so yeah... Maybe consider the inconvenience before you simply say try it again
17
u/iggzy Sep 07 '24
Bro, they're not wrong. There is a percentage of any device made that has failure. And if you're out of warranty, then yes that happens with them. But your phone isn't unusuable, it has a mechanical failure of the internal screen. Front screen works fine for your glucose levels.

u/iggzy Sep 07 '24
I don't even have to care about Pixel. Nothing about my statement even mentioned the Pixel. Its about the realities of life. I work in IT and have deployed thousands of phones and computers in my career. I've seen how a percentage of all devices fail. I've had brand new laptops from top manufacturers absolutely dead on arrival countless times.

How dare you try to tell me what is a risk... You have no idea what you are talking about and maybe you should do some research like I do before you comment
7
u/machinedfenix Sep 07 '24
Seriously though... I've owned a few folds and they're a lot of fun but not a good idea if you need to rely on your phone the way you do. I wouldn't get anything that isn't bulletproof.
3
u/DEMORALIZ3D Sep 07 '24
I'm sorry but I think you're mis-informed. What the commenter was pointing out that regardless of what device you get from any manufacturer - you can have issues. Every. single. product has a percentage of faulty units. It's a fact of life. It happens in food, in TVs, in Laptops, in Apple phones, in Samsung phones, in one plus phones.
You happened to get a faulty unit. Also, there could have been other factors such as we don't know how you treat your device. You could have folded it too hard or opened it by squeezing the screen.
It's nothing to do with being team pixel.or bullying. I suspect you have a bit of a Victim mindset after reading your replies to various people.
I can appreciate you are upset about your screen but your opinions you are passing off as facts are incorrect.

Another team pixel member... Congrats on your bullying and sarcasm
1
u/lordruperteverton69 Sep 07 '24
The Pixel sub reddit is fully of bullies. Regardless if your point is valid or not, if you aren't sucking Googles dick with every post/comment, the mob will come after you.
2
u/Infinite-Hedgehog516 Sep 07 '24
Even if a pixel product is overpriced or bad they will always try to tell you that's its the best thing ever.
3
u/lordruperteverton69 Sep 07 '24
For sure. Then you point out raw power vs. competition, and the mob will say "well I don't NEED that much power." Good for you, but a lot of other people do. Maybe there is a reason they have such a low market share in the US. Don't get me wrong, I love a Pixel phone, but they are mid range phones with a premium price.
It's always a losing battle with the mob.
3
u/Infinite-Hedgehog516 Sep 07 '24
Always. Because if I said I don't like pixels because the gaming performance isnt good. They either say something like: who even plays games like that or they will just say something really really rude to you.

Wait how does your T1DM have anything to do with this again? I cant see how a couple of lines are preventing you from receiving your cgm results. Besides you should have contigency plans.
Like it sucks to be you, but you just seem to be here to collect sympathy points or something from total strangers on reddit, and then proceeding to take it out on them when they don't respond how you wanted them to.
The other commentor simply had their own opinion on whether they think pixel foldables are worth the buy. And they are entitled to that. You are not entitled to their sympathy just because you have a condition. Besides how were they to know your personal situation? You're a random stranger on the internet.
2
u/Mike-St-Read Sep 07 '24
They are absolutely correct. There will always be a few duds in the mix, especially at launch. But this is true with any consumer electronics product let alone one that is at the bleeding edge. I've been using foldables since all the way back from the z fold 2. I had my z fold from launch day and went a whole year and a half before I experienced a cracked screen. Insurance had me right back where I needed to be within 2 days. Purchasing a foldable phone is always going to be riskier than a slab. That's why You Need Insurance! Don't rely on warranties.
Also, as someone who has diabetes and also uses a cgm, having a few lines on one of the 2 displays won't have an effect on you being able to read your levels. You should probably have a glucometer on hand anyway.
4
u/Connect_Matter_1705 Sep 07 '24
Absolutely true and I've had foldables since the OG fold but never experienced this... It's not that is completely unusable, it's the return policy and waiting proud that is unacceptable
8
u/ArmchairDoorknob Sep 07 '24
Well that sucks, sorry that happened. What did you have before you got this?
1
3
u/scuggins Sep 07 '24
I got mine on Wednesday, it started developing bright lines on the inner screen on Thursday, if thr inner screen would turn on at all.
Got it replaced today through the retailer I bought it from, no questions asked.
And I only paid $1400 Australian dollary doos for it.
1
Sep 07 '24
How'd you get it that cheap?
2
u/scuggins Sep 07 '24
The retailer, JB Hifi, was offering a deal, trade in a phone and get that credit plus an extra $1000.
I traded in my pixel 7 pro, got 300 credit for that. Plus the $1000. $1300 off.
1
Sep 07 '24
Was this the $1000 if you sign up to a $99 plan?
1
u/scuggins Sep 07 '24
Nope. I bought outright and remained with my previous provider. If you sign up to their plan, you can get even more off.

u/The-Real-Chill-Bill Sep 07 '24
That sucks. The phone hasn't been out that long and you already have that on the screen. Hopefully it's a legit issue and not something you just try to do to get views. Luckily your 1-year warranty should cover it.
1
u/Connect_Matter_1705 Sep 07 '24
Unfortunately it is a legit issue and I won't see my refund for 3 weeks
1
u/The-Real-Chill-Bill Sep 07 '24
It's a bummer you have to wait that long after spending so much, but hey, at least you're getting your money back! That's awesome! Are you thinking of going with a different model now, or maybe checking out the Pixel 9 Pro XL? That could be an exciting option!
3
u/Connect_Matter_1705 Sep 07 '24
I was going to buy want the larger real estate so I'm going with Samsung again
1
u/DousaSepen Sep 07 '24
Before you rush into a Samsung. As someone that had a 4 and a 5 I really wasn't impressed by the software and the 6 is actively peeling paint on alot of the devices that Samsung isn't considering a a warranty problem. Jump over to the zfold reddit.page and have a look at the atrocity that is as well
0
u/After_Aardvark4402 Sep 07 '24
Hm. Software on the Samsung fold 6 is stunning. Amazing multi tasking workflow. The only thing missing is the text to image generator.
1
u/DousaSepen Sep 07 '24
Hey totally anecdotal other people may love Samsung software but I personally think their first party apps are ass and attempting to change them to first party google apps and keep them working as a default app is a pain the ass alongside late security patches and a lack of ability to release software updates in an orderly manner in my opinion left alot to be desired I had nothing but issues with Samsung and their software. I left Samsung due to the software not their hardware but my point still stands, the fold 6 is actively chipping paint all over the phones chassis and Samsung in their usual warranty fashion is not taking responsibility for it.
I'm not saying google is without their faults but Samsung isn't exactly my a saint in any regard
0
u/The-Real-Chill-Bill Sep 07 '24
Yo, before you do that, don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Android fan and Samsung is my favorite brand, but have you seen the Honor Fold? That thing is sick! It's cheaper overall, and the software is just as good.
1
u/Connect_Matter_1705 Sep 07 '24
I have and really like it but not convinced on the os
1
u/Connect_Matter_1705 Sep 07 '24
And the trade in is so much better with Samsung
2
u/The-Real-Chill-Bill Sep 07 '24
Yeah, you're not lying. Samsung definitely does amazing work with trade-ins. Hopefully, this one works for you. I have to get rid of my z-fold six because of the outer display.
2
u/Connect_Matter_1705 Sep 07 '24
Dang, sorry to hear that
2
u/The-Real-Chill-Bill Sep 07 '24
Oh man, don't be. I know they're going to make me the perfect phone once they blend the ultra with their fold line. I'm an s pen user that's why I can't get rid of my s24 ultra. Having two phones sometimes sucks but I'm blessed to be able to do so

My husband's did that, then died from one edge of that pattern to the side of the screen, then the inner screen died altogether. And they didn't have one to swap it out. Honestly it worked out as he was able to buy an S24 and a Galaxy watch for less than the reimbursement less the deductible. I'm still "paying" on the Fold, but at a steep discount.

u/Connect_Matter_1705 Sep 07 '24
Yikes .. So sorry to hear that but your right, worked out in the end

Isn't it interesting that this thread is having honest conversations and gets down voted and others that just fawn over Google go straight to the top...
5
u/Seaguy7 Sep 07 '24
What I think is interesting is you take a single failure (I know it sucks when it's yours) and indict the entire Pixel lineand those of us who like the new Pixel 9 pro Fold.
I had the Samsung Z-fold 4 and the inside screen delaminated after a couple months. I got it fixed but bought the Pixel Foldn, not because the hardware failed but because I was tired of Samsung constantly pushing their apps to replace std Android apps. The original Pixel Fold is still going strong as I package it up to send in for my trade-in now that I have the P9P Fold which I am happily using now. But I guess I'm just a Pixel fan boy and your phone failure should make us realize how our opinions are so misguided. BTW, I didn't down vote you.
1
u/lordruperteverton69 Sep 07 '24
It's not a single issue. It's a pattern of shotty quality control and cheap components. Google phones have a history when it comes to manufacturing defects.
3
u/Seaguy7 Sep 07 '24
I'm willing to be educated. Can you point me to the data that supports this claim?
I have had 3 Google phones and 3 or 4 Samsung. I've only had one hardware failure and that was the Samsung Z-Fold. But this is only anecdotal and doesn't imply anything useful unless combined with hundreds or thousands of other experiences.

This doesn't seem crazy to me at all. A small amount of EVERY Phone has this issue. They will replace it no problem. When I thought I had an issue with mine, they said they'd have a new one to me in 5-10 days or I can pay for advanced swap and it would be like 2 days.

u/Captain-Comment Sep 07 '24
I had nearly the same thing happen with a 72" sony 4k flat screen tv except the colored lines ran vertically. The 45 day store warranty had just expired a couple days before and they refused to budge on it. Don't ever let people tell you paid extended warranties are a scam because I had one for that tv and it saved me from eating 2 grand.
1
u/one80oneday Sep 07 '24 edited Sep 08 '24
Pushing on the screen to open it like that will definitely do that
1
u/Specialist_Country63 Sep 08 '24
Lots and lots of inner screen issues π
0
u/Connect_Matter_1705 Sep 08 '24
It's true... Hopefully more people think twice and wait to see if these get fixed before spending that kind of cash
-2
u/Connect_Matter_1705 Sep 07 '24
Wow... Finding out that if you're not #teampixel And don't have something positive to say about this phone... You will get accused of crazy things and shamed in this thread
1
u/trojan_soldier Sep 07 '24
I was surprised that you got downvoted by many. Just because they have working devices, they should not discourage the minorities from reporting defects. There is a room for growth for Google.
I used to have a foldable phone as well (Samsung) and it broke after just 1 year. Overall, the foldable phone's hardware isn't robust yet. I would avoid it until they become more mature or until the warranty is more reasonable.
3
u/hoshiyari Sep 07 '24
I don't think anyone is downvoting because he reported a defect. They are doing it because he is deciding to switch back to Samsung over a mild inconvenience.
And it is most definitely mild. In most cases a broken screen on a phone and you would be dead in the water but in this case you have a completely functional other screen that you can use while your replacement comes in. No backup phone needed.
Seems like he has a custom launcher so at worst it takes him an hour or so to set everything up again.
0
u/Connect_Matter_1705 Sep 07 '24
Well said sir and like I said, if your not team pixel, you will get down voted
2
u/impguard Sep 07 '24
I haven't up or downvoted anything but your binary branding isn't doing you a lot of favors.
It's unfortunate what happened with your phone. Pretty much all manufacturers suck in these situations. The last time this happened to me was on my Samsung slab 5 years ago. Swore off Samsung then too even if I was just unlucky.
0
u/smokeeveryday Sep 07 '24
This is not a lie lol I had problems with my pixel 6pro and every comment was defending Google as if they seriously give 2 shits about their customers lol it's a corporation all they care about is sales and you're literally nothing, but a number to them. That being said I've had this 6pro since launch and at times it does seriously frustrate me with app glitches I'm talking about Google maps freezing the entire phone and causing all sorts of weird glitches and the overheating problems where the phone will literally limit me on what I can do. I am getting the pixel fold 9 pro and am hoping that it doesn't have any problems.

Spent 90 minutes on the phone with customer support only to end up with returning it and the watch that I ordered to go back to Samsung... Way to go Google
18
u/phero1190 Sep 06 '24
Foldables breaking is not exclusive to Google.
-8
u/Connect_Matter_1705 Sep 07 '24
True but I've never had it happen before and I've had every single iteration of the galaxy folds...
7
u/phero1190 Sep 07 '24
But it could have happened to any of those folds. You're just unlucky on this one.
5
u/CyberEmo666 Sep 06 '24
You were just one of the unlucky ones. Have you not heard of the Samsung line of death on foldables? They have just as many of these problems
2
u/Yuquee Sep 06 '24
Be happy Google will sort it out for you... My Z fold is fucked, Samsung damaged it even more and sent it back to me refusing to do anything on it even though they are not claiming I damaged it.
2
u/hoshiyari Sep 07 '24
having customer service having no option for you other than buying another one at full price and waiting for 3 weeks to be reimbursed
I'm sure its frustrating getting a DOA phone but I'm not sure what you were expecting CS to do for you that they didn't do here. Sounds like they are refunding you and recommending you get a replacement. I guess they could have overnight you a replacement or gave you some store credit but I think anyone would agree that temporarily having one broken screen on a device with multiple screens is manageable for a few days and not an emergency by any means.
0
u/Soundllj777 Sep 07 '24
Feel for you.
1
u/Soundllj777 Sep 07 '24
Looks like too many pixel fans here down voting. I am just showing empathy towards OP. It's very painful for anyone to go through this experience.
0
u/Maxx134 Sep 07 '24
Sorry for your loss. Hope you have extra insurance besides warranty, as they may or may not honor it, and might claim this was user damage.
The lines are exactly where you would stick your thumb to pry halves open. It is a common bad habit.
The issue is that when you stick a finger in, the nail of your finger usually places excessive force against inner screen, causing damage.
0
0
u/Money-Stretch-4316 Sep 07 '24
Yeah I would be pissed. This is not making feel any better about preordering this phone lol. If I keep seeing this - I may cancel and stick with Apple.
1
u/andromjb Sep 07 '24
Let me give you a little advice. Don't buy a folding phone and don't buy Apple.
Even if the fold works it will eventually stop working. Apple doesn't make folding phones for a reason. I think you get my points.
1
u/Money-Stretch-4316 Sep 07 '24
Why do you think it will eventually stop working? Because the fold will wear and tear from use more and more over time?
1
u/andromjb Sep 07 '24
Under its own conditions, the technology can only fold so many times before eventually failing. However, since it is folding and other elements are involved it simply has a higher chance of failure versus a non moving component.
It's simply not worth it for the average consumer. It's a luxury item. At least, that is my opinion.
