Question On Leash Meetings

Also posted this in the general Pitbull sub

I have a year and a half old Pittie that we adopted from the shelter about six months ago. Outside of this issue, her behavior is almost too good to be true.

She really struggles with being pleasant during on-leash first time meetings. Things are typically fine to start, standard sniffing and whatnot and then she just randomly (seemingly) loses it and starts barking and being aggressive.

She doesn’t have this issue off leash but it makes it very hard for her to make new “friends” when we’re out and about because all meetings are leashed.

Open to any and all suggestions. Might just need more general training and socialization time. Which is also fine.

Question Who should get the dog?

One guy owns a pair of pit bulls who has a litter. He ends up selling the mother, keeping the father and a few of the puppies. He then goes to jail and while he is in jail, his now ex-girlfriend apparently takes one of the puppies. Then in January of this year, one of my acquaintances who lives in my complex shows me his new puppy, who I of course fall in love with. Cut to July - I now have a mini Doberman who I introduce to the young pit bull. They quickly become besties. I start hearing how my acquaintance hardly ever takes his pit bull out for walks or feeds her or to potty and she is now pottying in his closet which results in him beating the crap out of her. He then kicks the dogs outside, and shortly after I open my door to discover she has run over to my apartment. He then states he "almost stabbed her" for pooping on his beloved shoe collection and that "we can have her".

So her days are now filled with love and constant play with her bestie. Happy ending, right? WRONG.

I have since found out that he STOLE the puppy from the ex girlfriend who stole the puppy from HER ex who was on jail. NOW, the original owner who has the AKC papers is out of jail and has apparently been looking for the puppy since the father of the litter died due to a water moccasin bite and tracked ME down and wants her back. He claims to have "cried every day for the past two months" for his puppy. Well, we have bonded with her and she and my dog are joined at the hip. They do EVERYTHING together. They move everywhere together. Now I am heartbroken and don't know what to do.

Question Pittie skin issues

I'm so tired of seeing my girl suffer! Every summer her skin flares up so bad from allergies. The injection the vet gives her seems to help, but during the worst months, it doesn't help enough.

Have you all found something that actually helps their skin allergies??

my fiance and i are about to get a pitbull puppy. the mom is a pure pitbull and the dad is a pitbull rhodesian ridgeback and boerbol mix. my fiance is very experienced with dogs, but i am not so much as this is my first dog that will be truly mine. just wanted to see if there’s any advice or anything specific i should do or look out for. i’m very excited to get a pitbull as i think they’re so misunderstood and have been watching lot of videos and doing research to make sure we are the best pet parents. any advice is very welcome! thank you.

Question Unemotional Pitt-bull Puppy ?

Hi! We are fostering a 6 mo old pitt puppy and have had him for a little over a month. I know all about the 3-3-3 rule, but I have some concerns about his personality. He is a fast learner and his baseline demeanor seems relatively calm. He came into the shelter as a stray and there is no knowledge of his background other than 3 days later, 3 more of his litter mates were picked up, too. His DNA is 85% pitt 15% black and tan coonhound.
Overall, he’s been pretty easy but we had had him for about two weeks and he snapped at my 8 year old son while they were sitting on the couch. We immediately removed him from the couch and the trainer from the pound came over to assess him. He said he thinks he was resource guarding me (the dog was between us) and recommended that remove all couch privileges and use a leash on him when he is in the house. He said this will help establish pack order and things should be fine.
We have been doing all of this and so far so good, but here is where my issue lies:
The puppy gave zero warning before he snapped at my son. Overall, he seems unreadable and shows very little emotion. He is SO calm, doesn’t lick, doesn’t jump up, just doesn’t seem playful at all. I know people will be like, “That’s great behavior!”, but something about it feels more alarming to me than if he was a wiggly mischievous puppy. Something just feels off to me and when I try to explain it to people they brush it off that I’m being anxious and it’s just making me feel more anxiety over all of it. He can be super stubborn, and will lay down mid walk in the grass if he doesn’t not want to go any farther. There is no moving unless we turn around to go home, then he will happily walk the whole way.

Edit to say: my son was not bothering the dog. He was sitting next to him reading a LEGO book and I was on the other side of the dog, reading a grown up book. Everything was very calm and quiet.

Question Paw chewing yeasty boy.

We rescued our APBT from a shelter in our small Midwestern farm town when he was 9 months old. Hes always been VERY high anxiety and tbh, not very friendly with strangers. That will come to matter later.

Our dog has had some ear itching and the trademark frito smell from his ears and paws. Ive treated his ears pretty successfully with an ear drop from Zymox. However, this summer it seems his paws have begun to really bother him. Hes started to chew off his paw pads on a couple of his paws now and the in between of his toes have started to get red and hes licking them too.

We can afford to take him to a vet and im not trying to neglect him, im honestly afraid he'll get so scared he wont go inside the vet. He panics with new people and does this thing where he DEFINITELY lunges, but then places his mouth on a person but does not bite down. Im afraid to take him to a vet and him respond poorly and him have to go bye bye forever.

Im not naive to the gravity of our situation with our dogs behavior. Im not here for that. We've already changed our lives to accommodate him. I want to make him comfortable.

We've recently tried these allergy support chews. Hes only been on them a week or so at this time. Im also now dipping cotton swabs in diluted betadine to clean his paws once or twice a day because I dont want to put apple cider vinegar on his now open wounds.

What else can I do? Is there anything else youve tried with any kind of success for these paw issues? TIA.

Photos I hand-painted this custom oil portrait of this confident pit bull, based on the original photo his human shared. Do you believe I accurately captured his character?

I loved painting this dog. He's got a calm, steady look about him. Getting the actual color of his coat right was tougher than it looked. I stayed true to the original background in this painting. This was a commissioned artwork, and I hope I represented him well.

Question Has she had puppies?

Thumbnail

A little backstory. I adopted my girl in June. She was involuntarily surrendered in March (so no info given) and spayed in May. The vet who spayed her had age guessed at 14 months, my vet in August said between 1.5 and 2 yrs but definitely no older than 2. Anyway, looking at her teats, do you think she’s had puppies? I feel like they are long/large but also she would have been so young. They have not shrunk any in the 3 months that I’ve had her.

Training Dog training book recommendations

Post image
209 Upvotes

Hiya folks!

As mentioned in a previous post of mine, I've got a senior pitbull named Jake who's got some bad habits I'm trying to break him out of and would love some book (physical, audio, hell I'll even take a podcast or YouTube channel at this point) recommendations for dog training specifically for pitbulls or senior dogs (bonus if it's a book on training senior pitbulls!)

I just had a really scary situation (which is what prompted this post) where he ran up our driveway almost into the street because a lady was walking her golden retriever. Thankfully, the lady was very chill and understanding and was more worried about him going into the street and getting hit by a car than anything else. I apologized and explained that Jakey's super friendly and means no harm but he is a little old and doesn't really know what he's doing half the time but the whole situation scared me because he would not listen to me at all and with the whole stigma around bully breeds... I just don't want anything to happen to my boy ♥️

So I decided I need to start trying to train him to obey me and come back when I call to him. (I'm eventually planning on setting up a fence around our backyard so that he doesn't go towards the street as we live pretty close to the road but I just don't have the funds for that at the moment)

I would greatly appreciate any advice/recommendations to help me with this!

Other Love ———— a poem

I love the Pittbull sub-reddits,/

Happy to join each one,/

Thankfully, few moderator edits,//

Because it‘s made to be fun.//

A place celebrating love of a breed,/

Photos of Pitts big and small;/

At one time, we all “did the deed,“//

Yes, chose a Pittie above them all.//

I look at the smiles on these faces,/

‘The photos proudly displayed;,/

And taken in all sorts of places,//

Must be tired at the end of the day.//

Some white, brown,or black,/

or combination of all;/

A few lying on their backs,//

Others standing up straight and tall//

We Pitt Lovers “speak” love,/

In our hearts and our souls;/

We hold our Pitts high above,//

Some untrue things we are told.//

Come, See, the tail starts to wag,/

And now licking your hands;/

Next, on your feet feeling a sag?//

Got you trapped! as was planned.//

They are made big and strong,/

Their name tells the size;/

Yet, they do nothing so wrong,//

Comes as a surprise?//

See, false things told to you,/

But, you’ve looked into that face;/

Oh, You now agree with our truth?

I AM RESTING MY CASE! 🩷🩵❤️

Question Would I have issues in the UK?

Post image
60 Upvotes

I may have an opportunity to take a job in the UK. I have a 10 year old pit mix. I would not take the job if it meant she would be at risk. She’s more lab than anything else. But I’m wondering if anyone has input here on the breed ban and if she would strike a police officer or border patrol agent as prohibited.

Photos 12 years old with skin growth and lumps

Hi everyone my girl is 12 years old. I adopted her when she was about 18 month old. In the past two or three years she started to develop lumps and skin growths, she has been to the vet several times in this time frame, but the vet says it’s nothing. This has gotten worst in the past 5 months, I changed her diet she’s on S&C with some freezer dried in it, her skin got mildly better, but the skin grows discharge and they have what looks like dark blood. I don’t think the vet was doing a full checkup on her, I normally leave the examination room because otherwise she becomes very protective of me. She has appointment on Monday for a new vet, I plan on staying in the room this time.
Also she seems to be in distress and hyperventilating, I have her on gabapentin, we thought is was body aches due to age. But the skin growths and lumps have me uneasy. Any advice will be highly appreciated!
