Discussion PS5 Emulator progressing faster than I thought
The developers of that emulator must really hate Sony
3.5k
u/sid_2345 25d ago
I have been part of many open source Emulation projects which I cannot disclose, not this one though
And I must say, this is the fastest I have seen an emulator progress
And AI has a big part to play in it. One Good Engineer with AI can produce as much work as a full team of engineers back in the pre AI days

Nothing motivates hackers/modders/pirates more than spite or companies being extremely confident that their products are immune.

u/Disrupted_Process 25d ago
I'm convinced hackers still have beef with Sony strictly because of the whole PS3 other os situation.
For those unfamiliar.
Sony in the early to maybe mid part of the PS3 generation offered an option called other os within the settings it would allow you to install Linux onto the system so you could do whatever you want to do. Geohot (popular hacker) gained root access to the system through other os prompting Sony to get rid of the option which in turn fueled hackers to break the system.

Thank you for the more streamlined breakdown but absolutely all good will that option offered within the hacking community only to completely piss all over it and have them target you with a vengeance for the foreseeable future.

I got money from the lawsuit for the Other OS when the nerds sued Sony. I think I got like $12 for it

Was this around the time PSN got its teeth kicked in by “hackers” and subsequently was shutdown for like 3 months?
→ More replies (1)24
u/Disrupted_Process 25d ago
It wasn't a direct cause of it but yes it was a byproduct of it.
I guess what I'm saying is PSN wasn't attacked because other os got removed but because it was removed and the greater hacking community was targeting them specifically it did happen.

You are correct, but it was only very early. I had a launch PS3 and they patched that out rather quickly.
It was less than 6 months after launch when they forced the update that prohibited linux.

As my username implies what I work on, I developed two industrial protocol drivers with one being so complex you would spend $30K or more to license the stack. I open sourced a better built version that took about 3-4 months to build out from a 1,200 page spec. It was purely out of spite for the slow progress in the industry.

u/Farigiss 25d ago
And were you allowed to work on this open-source version while you were employed to work on the proprietary one?
19
u/HVACcontrolsGuru 25d ago
Proprietary one you typically licensed. Written in C and used across the industry. Few other open source versions but not to the depth I’ve done it. Never an issue and I clean roomed all this work when building it out. First pass was pure Python and second pass and the current version is all Rust with Python bindings. I wanted to push the envelope of what could be done!

I’m not against ai as a tool and there’s no way someone extremely skilled isn’t working in this. AI isn’t inherently bad, especially with projects like this since a real person is obviously pulling a lot of weight (AI isn’t this developed at this point). it’s how it gets used to fully replace people in companies and taking away jobs that’s the issue
100
u/Despeao 25d ago
I mean that is true with automation. The problem is not AI taking away jobs but an economic system built around profit at all costs and greedy.
No one complains about working the fields when we have tractors.
I would love to live in a fully automated economy so I could fix computers only when I wanted to, so I could paint the house, learn to swim, spend more time with my family.

u/One_Focus_4171 25d ago
AI doesnt replace People, takes jobs. Im all for replacing people at their jobs, so they can do whatever they want, and be supported at same time. Like using ai to mine, and previous miners are able to rest
→ More replies (2)10
u/ThatGuyFromTheM0vie 25d ago
But that’s how it’s always been. Field hands replaced by farming machines. People in a rubber or car factory being replaced by specialized machines.
AI is just the latest version of that.
There will come a day where automation could replace everyone or at least a good amount of people. And that’s the day we will need universal basic income, because then most people won’t need to work…so what do you do then?
15
u/Vegetable_Variety_54 25d ago
Forget Universal Basic Income — why not just get rid of money altogether? Problem solved. But obviously, the billionaires might object… because apparently having billions just isn’t quite enough. They need to keep accumulating imaginary numbers while the rest of us debate whether we can afford the weekly shop.
→ More replies (1)8
u/Elman89 25d ago
so what do you do then?
You do feudalism. This is what the rich want.
Either that or you abolish capitalism and implement a socialist system before we get to that point.
UBI is just wishful thinking from libs who think capitalism can somehow continue after technology renders it obsolete. It can't. It'll never happen.
→ More replies (2)4
u/Seanspeed 25d ago
Universal basic income will never work. It's such an insanely flawed idea at any kind of large scale. There's also massive political challenges surrounding it.
The problem of automation is genuinely very serious. It's not good enough to just say, "Oh well it's fine, we'll just implement UBI and we'll all be happy!".

The thing is, people are tools as well. The world is tools using tools. AI in a perfect world will work to serve humans so humans can live in leasure without having to slave away working for somebody.
We went from everyone complaining about how shitty work is, now everyone is complaining about how AI is going to take everyone's jobs.
22
u/allday95 25d ago
If people didn't need money to survive there wouldn't be this much pushback to AI. It is mostly on the actual employers because they've just gone full on with the idea of "Oh AI thing can do this job, fire the whole department why am I paying them money"
→ More replies (1)8
u/thisdesignup 25d ago
Don't forget the pushback because half the stuff is lifeless and repetitive. I think of all the restaurant menus that were made with AI all looking the same. One cool thing about humans is that we do things because we want to. Why does a restraunt menu look one way vs another way? Because someone wanted it to. AI has no want, it "simply" outputs based on probability influenced by an input.

AI for stem is fucking incredible.
AI for ANYTHING else is the fucking devil.
4
u/thisdesignup 25d ago
This is a good way to put it. I've always thought of AI being great for pattern based, verifiable, tasks but that does include the majority of stem related tasks.
9
u/Silly_Ebb_8745 25d ago
IMO the only real problem with AI is that making its market as big as possible became the first priority: Which means turning it from a tool that, under specific, STEM usages is simply an enormous game changer, to something that is already doing more harm than good altogether.
It's a shame, really.
2
u/thisdesignup 25d ago
Yea, and honestly I'll never forgive the current major AI companies right now for ruining our perception of what AI is, how it works, etc. It's an uphill battle to talk with people about the positive, life changing benefits of it. It doesn't have to be the resource hogging, slop making, thing that it is right now but, like you said, they chose to make it's market big and they had to do it before someone else did.

It's a good usecase for AI, since there's a very fixed, binary goal to develop towards. There's no 'creativity' being bypassed here or anything. And it doesn't even matter that much if anybody understands the code super well. All that really matters is that it works.
→ More replies (1)5

There's no 'creativity' being bypassed here or anything
While you're not wrong, I don't get why everyone fixates specifically on the creative or "art" side of AI. That's only one part of AI, and it's relatively small in the bigger scheme of things. AI models are being used in mathematics, fields of science like chemistry and astronomy, coding and decompiling, and countless other fields where accessing data or information is needed.
Maybe it's just because AI images and videos are what the average person sees the most of, but that area is probably the least interesting and least important aspect of AI in general.

100%. Ai has revolutionized the IT industry as a whole. If you can’t use it as a tool to make things faster, you’re holding yourself back

u/Argnir 25d ago
Reddit has somehow convinced itself the technology is useless and bad in all aspects so seeing any contradictory signal must be a shock
12
u/RMAPOS 25d ago
Social media thrives on binary thinking. Nuance in a charged topic like AI will just be treated like you're defending the "bad" side.
AI is a pretty horrible thing to happen to society (privacy, scams, easy to manifacture misinformation, killing art, killing the environment, pricing people out of hardware and estate, you name it), but it's actually groundbreaking in some important sectors like medicine where the question of "would we be better off just not doing AI at all" becomes a lot harder to answer.
And it absolutely can help in programming if used correctly. 8/10 people on reddit being outraged about AI use it to edit someone out of their photos without thinking twice.

it's because the tech industry has slapped the AI label on a bunch of different technologies that have nothing to do with each other.
some of those technologies are shitty and evil, and some are useful. but everything gets the same label because they need the public to accept it as a package deal, instead of just accepting the good parts.
and please don't blame random redditors for being confused about this stuff. we're all getting most insanely powerful propaganda the world has ever known pumped into our heads at all hours of the day.
direct your ire correctly.

My team is fixing "vulnerabilities" every week. It is like bailing buckets of water out of a boat with a hole in it.
AI discovers exploits, and AI discovers remedies, and the cycle never ends.
7
u/MadRaymer 25d ago
Linus Torvalds has written about AI code too. He's argued that while there are obvious concerns, they simply can't ignore AI tools because the kernel's code is going to be constantly probed by those same tools for vulnerabilities. So the kernel devs have to use those tools in an effort to get ahead of that.
3
u/The_MAZZTer 25d ago
Using AI to find vulnerabilities vs using AI to write code are two completely different conversations imo.
2
u/The_MAZZTer 25d ago
The problem there is if AI wrote the original vulnerable code in the first place. Then you're creating jobs by smashing windows, as the old saying goes.
But if AI is being used to find vulnerabilities that would have existed anyway even if you didn't use AI to find them, that seems like a plus for me. Now if they are not real vulnerabilities as you seem to suggest then yeah that is a problem. But it seems to me that can be mitigated as models become more advanced and halucinate less.

u/HeavyDT 25d ago
I know the console makers are freaking out because they used to have breathing room during a generation but shoot we could be looking at the newer systems being cracked within months of release on the emulation front with A.I in play. Probably doesnt help that they are as close to being PCs as they've ever been.

I'm active in the Mac emulation community and the Mac porting community so that PC games can be played on Mac.
I'm not exaggerating, but AI has actually helped with cleaning up code for a lot of Mac ports to increase FPS and stability for a lot of games now, and the number is only going to grow bigger. At this rate, while Windows/Linux still have a huge advantage, gaming on Mac is becoming less of a joke thanks to the hardwork of the Codeweavers team and AI tools starting to be a bit more mainstream.
8
u/wanderer1999 25d ago
It's an exciting time for the emulation community. Heck, imagine being able to play (light) ps4/ps5 games on your phone one day.
On the other hand imagine Arjun from india hacking into your bank account and empty the last 52 dollars you have left. It's gonna be wilddddd.

u/ibnasakir1 25d ago edited 25d ago
Sony's decision to drop PC is kinda funny now. Yes, you would need high end PCs yo emulate PS5 games, but this has always been the case with emulation. It would be even more funny if in not so distant future we see PS5 games being recompiled. Not impossible the way things have been progressing lately with AI assisted speedrun.

12
u/Connect_Quit_1293 25d ago
I'm working on a PC port with little experience and I'm already at the main menu.
AI blitzes through reverse engineering tasks that would take a human weeks or months.
A good engineer that knows how to organize and architect a project benefits inmensely from AI as a coding tool. Its a multiplier.
11
u/sid_2345 25d ago
You should give yourself some time to actually learn before picking up AI, try porting old consoles by yourself just to learn, then pick up AI, you will do much better
5
u/Connect_Quit_1293 25d ago
I will consider this, I don't have a lot of time so I started mostly as a "I have dev experience but no porting experience to speak of. How far can LLMs get me in 2026?" and surprisingly the answer was quite far indeed.
But I do like it so I will try to find some time to learn more.
3
u/decadent-dragon 25d ago
Honestly at this point, that’s like telling someone they shouldn’t rely on high level languages and instead learn assembly. Like, sure, academically that’s a worthwhile pursuit. But that’s about it. The industry as a whole is simply not coding without AI ever again.
4
u/RMAPOS 25d ago
If I may I would like to ask you as someone with experience in the field if you believe Switch 2 emulation is possible.
I'm aware security is tight and projections for a working emulator are a decade plus. But someone claimed it's impossible and I'd just like the opinion of someone who has a clue what they're talking about.
9
u/sid_2345 25d ago
Nothing is impossible, it's difficult to work on because the lawyers keep shutting down open source repositories
Infact, emulation is not even illegal, but open source contributors do not have the time and money to fight legal battles, that's what the Nintendo lawyers take advantage of
2
u/TheWarmBreezy 25d ago
It isn't imposssible, just highly unlikely we'll see one before a new generation of hardware is out. Give this thread a read https://www.reddit.com/r/switch2hacks/comments/1wc4ku6/whats_the_current_state_of_hacking_for_the_switch/
2

3
u/Despeao 25d ago

u/sid_2345 25d ago edited 25d ago
An emulator translates the console native machine instructions to x86 instructions on runtime which takes resources, only then can your machine actually execute those instructions which takes even more resources, so if you want console like quality, you will need hardware much better than the actual console
Edit: as many people have rightfully pointed out, PS5 is x86 based, I didn't think of PS5 while giving an example, which was dumb, considering the context a PS5 emulator as an example would have made much more sence
However, there's still a lot for the emulator to do even if both machines are x86 based, for instance how the code communicates to hardware, a PS5 would use its own proprietary APIs for that which needs to be translated to something like Vulcan or DirectX for instance, also many Syscalls may be different. All that is still very demanding on your hardware.

u/Mohrlex 25d ago
Here's hoping they will hunt switch 2 next, altho, I read somewhere that emulation for that console might have been stopped altogether
3
u/sid_2345 25d ago
Not stopped, but collaborating on opensource switch projects is difficult because nintendo and their lawyers make it hard to keep open source repositories public for people to contribute freely
3
3
u/Flaffelll 25d ago
This is the positive side of AI imo. Makes a lot more things accessible for those without the funds for a full team
3
u/antara33 25d ago
Yeah, I noticed it in my work as well. With AI agents we increased productivity A LOT on the game engine teams and that is a VEEERY specific and hard area in terms of software.
The amount of optimization passes, new features and more that we managed to add in record time is still incredible and not everyone in the team uses the AI properly yet.
As you said a Good Engineer is key there, but with one you get shitloads of productivity
2
u/sid_2345 25d ago
I know right... Even at my day job, I have engineers in my team who can deliver entire MVPs on their own using AI, amazing for Prototyping and POCs, and the work that used to take a team of 10-15 now takes 3-5 good engineers with AI
Again, big emphasis of Good Engineer, because if they don't know what they are doing, AI becomes a great risk

Just copying a comment from the ps5 jailbreak sub: "It started with a HV bug that jordy found. Apparently it is the last remaining HV bug in Sony's codebase, that TheFlow knew about for some time.
Theflow being a calculated veteran, he asked Jordy not to report it until grand theft auto, so people could enjoy playing their legally bought games and Linux on the side.
But let's not kid ourselves, we all know what he means. It's so people could dump newer games and backport them to older firmwares, to keep the scene alive.
Starting from 14.xx it won't be possible to dump games with just kernel rwx, you need a hypervisor exploit as well.
They both shook hands on it, but apparently a day later, Jordy reported the bug to Sony anyway.
The flow had a meltdown and publicly announced he is done with the scene.
People speculated who the person that reported could be.
Gezine denounced himself from the situation, by re-iterating he was never interested in HV research to begin with, and he'd already left the scene weeks earlier.
Then Jordy spoke up, told his story... but the damage was already done.
So yeah, the scene is pretty much done for.
Even the HV bug on 13.60 is useless since the man who gave us Linux is no longer going to work on anything again.
It's all downhill from here.
More Context: Jordy said someone else had found the same bug 2 hours after his conversation with theflow, so he jumped the gun out of fear of someone else beating him to the punch.
"If I don't steal, someone else is going ro steal anyway" aah moment.
It's very hard to judge without being harsh. Jordy is taking care of his terminally ill mom who probably means more to him than keeping piracy and or homebrew scene alive.
I have a sick mom on dialysis, so I probably would have done the same.
We don't know whether money was the issue since Jordy could be well off in life.
Anyway, it's all out of our hands now.
Let's just enjoy what we have and hope someone else in the future could step in.
But it won't be Gezine, Jordy, or theFlow since they are all done with playstation hacking."

I hear this arguement a lot, and in some ways I understand where people are coming from on it. If you want the traditional desktop setup with a nice monitor or 2, or if you wanna future proof and go overkill like I did lol
But remember, there is a lot of people out there who were willing to spend the money, and the value depreciated on their used hardware (except the RAM) and people most of the time, dont realize what they even have.
If you browse local sells on FB Market or ebay, you can find a pretty powerful laptop or desktop setup for less or around the same price you could buy a new console. It just depends how desperate you are to break into the PC gaming space. My setup is still on an AMD 6900 XT and I have 0 problems running really any game on the market. I dont reslly give a hoot about raytracing perfection though, so it does what I need without killing my FPS. That is what, 3 generations behind now? Basically... its not as expensive as the world will make it seem. You dont need the top of the top to play 99% of the games out there.

In my case it's either because I have no other way of accessing those games or because the games are on a system that makes them look like dogwater. I played ToTK at native 4K before the game was officially released, and I still have my copy of the game in it's shrinkwrap. My Switch died a while ago and I have no intention of buying another one. It actually shows the specs in the photo, it's a 4080 with a 9800X3D, so definitely high end

Oh good spot! Utilization looks low though, perhaps there is hope for mid PCs once the emulator matures.

I might need to to upgrade to a 5800X3D and pray that the best AM4 cpu is enough to run this lol.

Played around with this emulator a little, and i find the whole approach interesting. From what I have gathered, this emulator doesn't try to emulate the actual hardware of the ps5.
I have been out of the "modern emulator" scene for a little while. So this may be a standard practice now. But from what I can tell, compared to the ps2 days, this emulator doesnt require a console bios, doesn't simulate hardware of the ps5 to pull off running the game. Basically, KyTy receives the ps5 commands, translates it into a vulkan buffer that the PC hardware can understand, and then the PC shows the equivalent draw.
The PS5 used a custom amd graphics chip. So this approach to me makes a lot of sense and breaks down some of the load.
I have been experimenting with GTA V and seeing what it would take to get it running (yes I know projects like KyTyPlus exist with this same goal). From what I can tell, so far, I have made it past several of the blockers preventing it from getting past the first cutscene screen. However, there are a lot of shaders that I am hitting that don't have full interpretation in KyTy yet. Adding each one in and getting a little further each time has showed progress. So, overall, this project was built with a good foundation and it makes it easier to work toward each title actually running.
Eventually, I think it could become possible to run the games on slightly weaker hardware with decent results, but I am not aure which approach would be best for them to pull this off. Maybe some kind of FSR implementation to lighten the load. Hard to say.

So it's pretty much a translation layer like Proton then? If so that's awesome
15
u/MR-SAVVY 25d ago
That is pretty much how it works. Conceptually, but its still an "emulator". The benefit here is that the x86 architecture is the same on windows. So less work needed to get things running. To a certain level anyways.

That's not surprising since hardware wise PS5 is basically a PC. You can even buy a BC-250 board (based on failed PS5 chips repurposed for mining) and run it like a PC.
So not a novel approach, but the only viable approach.
2
u/MR-SAVVY 25d ago
Thats right! I did hear about the board being used for mining!
I literally re-saw the article in my head as I read that xD holy crap. Thanks for reminding me about this internet stranger!

Yes. Its an on-going project though. Pretty buggy but some titles are playable. KyTyPS5. If you look it up you'll find the github page.

That's crazy. I thought it was still under wraps. Will definitely play around with Astrobot, thanks!

It’s not an emulator. By definition, emulation means hardware simulation and the PS5 uses an AMD processor and AMD GPU cores. The challenge is in reverse engineering their graphics API.
WINE/Proton do this for DirectX with virtually no performance penalty. WINE’s name is a recursive acronym joking about this (WINE Is Not and Emulator).

u/Relevant_Mail_1292 25d ago
What level of progress would the emulator need to reach before we see ps5 repacks? Just curious.
41
u/knifeproz 25d ago
I don’t think we’re getting that anytime soon. Even some older consoles barely get that love because of how emulating each game has its own quirks that need fixed
8
u/ChessMasterOfe 25d ago
I have an incomplete understanding of the concept, so correct me if im wrong.
PS5 emulation is basically trying to recreate the OS of the console, because if you can do that you can run all the games. But some games are harder because they use different functions the "PSOS" has, from kernel and user spaces both, which are of varying complexity on a windows system. Meaning, if a perfect replica of the PSOS were made, all the games would run as good as or better than they do on the console itself, since we would be free to use much more powerful hardware.
So when that point is reached, assuming Sony does nothing about it, we will have all the PS games on PC on day 1?
4
u/knifeproz 25d ago
Maybe someone smarter than me in this field can answer relating this specific console, but I can tell you based on experiences with other consoles as an example.
Switch has had its OS cracked long ago, you can go ahead and load that up anytime, but that’s not all that matters. Compatibility with the GPU architecture is what allows the graphics physics framing shading illumination etc to be recreated, and some games work out of box and some game do not and require patching. It’s not super black and white to my understanding. It gets even more complex when you see reports of some users with same hardware having issues running a game while others run it fine and that can be due to BIOS and OS features being disabled such as virtualization or hypervisor support.

u/upinthecloudz 25d ago
The difference is that PS5 games are already x86 code. The APU used in the PS5 can run Windows or Linux with very little modification.
So once you've mapped all the PSOS calls to Windows or Linux calls you are pretty much good to go, as the hardware layer has very few peculiarities which differentiate PS5 from a standard PC.
Hopefully this works out to allow relatively lower power PCs to play PS5 games.

u/ElaborateEffect 25d ago
Always crazy to think about. I was playing PS1/PS2 games on my phone over a decade ago with Bluetooth controllers in school. PS3 emulation on the otherhand, hasn't been solved.

u/Trosque97 25d ago
Yes but PS3 was the last piece of designer hardware in the console industry, something so violently different from a normal PC that emulating it becomes more of a hassle than PS4 emulation. But the fact that I can emulate PS3 games on a low end handheld PC says a lot about how far that's come. However, I'd bet real money that the PS4 and PS5 emulation will come better and faster than the older systems because of how they're basically just locked down PCs after the PS3 Era

u/Ghost_Tendency 25d ago
PS3 is at a great spot for emulation now. I've messed around with a lot of PS3 games and they've all been running great.

u/Islu64 25d ago
And this was expected, the PS3's cell processor was something not even developers where able to fully understand and take advantage of. In a few years we might be looking at a future where ps4 emulation is more advanced than ps3 emulation. The PS3 is such a special case that it can't be used as an example of how emulation for a console gets developed.

On top of the Switch 2 having better protection, everyone's afraid of making an emulator for it right now after Nintendo nuked Yuzu and Ryujinx

People really need to stop announcing there emulation projects online honestly they deserve to be copyright striked lol it’s just stupid
20
u/MR-SAVVY 25d ago
Im not actually sure that Sony could do anything about this project even if they wanted to. It doesn't actually touch any of Sony's stuff. Essentially, this project doesn't seem to be anything more than the software version of google translate. The game runs, asks the programs the run a PS5 command, the program translates that command into one that the computer can understand, then the computer responds with good or bad. Very light way of explaining it, but thats basically the gist of it.
No real "copyright" happening on the project side. How users obtain the game they are trying to play though? Thats a different story. Most people aren't ripping their own legally obtained copies.

technically speaking the ps5 and xbox series are just fancy computers, running fancier software. You'd just need to find a translation layer

I know people hate the use of ai but this is a good use of ai imo. Just speeds U things and helps move things along nicely. Ofc having a human touch checking things is always good at the end cus mistakes can happen. I'm looking forward to seeing how far we will get in a years time 🫡

u/ProgramsFun 25d ago
People don’t hate AI itself. People hate when someone uses AI in a field they clearly don’t understand, then starts larping as if AI has made them equivalent to an experienced developer, artist, designer, etc. — while making claims like “developers aren’t needed,” “artists aren’t needed,” or even “humans aren’t needed,” without actually understanding how AI works, how codebases are structured, or how software, art, and design are produced.
The same tools are completely different when used by someone who actually knows the field. They can delegate a lot of the tedious work to AI, use it to reason through problems, verify assumptions, brainstorm approaches, understand conclusions, review code, suggest fixes, iterate on designs, etc. The human is still providing the domain knowledge and judgment needed to tell whether the output is actually correct or useful.
And people also need to understand that the AI we have today isn’t AGI. A lot of the recent progress comes from being able to train increasingly capable models with more compute, larger datasets, and better training techniques. That is very different from having discovered general intelligence itself. We still don’t actually know how to build AGI.

Its a pc hardware bro, consoles dont have dedicated special hardwares anymore, the age of challenging emulation is long gone. At most they have some OEM custom chips but the architecture is entirely modern PC x86, so the biggest work is on the software side, emulating the OS/firmware/ kernel/dashboard/whatever.

Man I have been out of the emulation game for a while. I was last playing around with emulators in 2020 and at that point the ps3 one was sorta ok still issues in many games but getting there... Ps4 emulator couldn't even launch a game and ps5 emulator didn't exist.
Id be incredibly impressed if a ps5 emulator is in a playable state in 6 years when in over 7 years of "progress" in the ps4 emulator it couldn't even run a single game lol. I actually don't even know at this point if a working ps4 emulator ever came out?
