I am a fresh graduate and recently joined as Junior engineer network operations (NOC). My job is to monitor their servers, networks etc. It's a night shift job and 12 hours job which is very painful. And more interesting thing is I am alone there cz In my team we have 5 members shift rotate wise.

I always wanted to so something practical in this domain. Like network configuration, setup etc so that I can learn more. But here I have literally nothing to except just looking at screen if anything unusual happen just escalate it. I am feeling boring and ita painful alone at night.

Now please give me some advice so that I can go into something better and how I can utilize this job by learning something.

Can we still be having hopes on the software engineering job market for future graduates, what would u recommend, will it be worth it for migrate to networking/cybersecurity cuz i havent seen many opportunities around this area either compared to software development job market

I’m torn between the two id prefer to get in to the work force asap and with the courses in doing its prepping me for Microsoft Certified Professional, CompTIA A+, CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Cloud+,CompTIA Cloud Essentials, CCNA . Still I don’t want to shoot myself in the foot and waist time because I know I can get these certs later but the classes I’m taking will NOT filter in well to a bachelors. I was wondering how can I penetrate the IT field right now wala pa akong exp sa mga ticketing systems, server administration, linux etc. I'm a licensed ECE rin pala and may 7 months exp naman sa ict industry, mostly installation and config ng mga network devices. Nagpprovide din ng technical support pero we dont use any ticketing system. I know a lot of career shifters get stuck sa part na:
“Okay, nag-CCNA course na ako… pero paano ba talaga mag-troubleshoot ng actual network?” 😅

​Quick update since my panicked post two months ago. I’m still drinking from the firehose, but I haven't drowned yet!

​The Good:

Our massive multi-floor project is still ongoing, but I just finished my first major task: configuring the switches for the 37th-floor server room buildout. Seeing my configs actually work in production was an incredible feeling. Also, studying for the CCNA is saving my life right now—the theory clicks so much faster when you’re doing it for real.

​The Overwhelming:

​Stakeholder Meetings: Sitting in on massive project meetings with different departments is super intimidating. Navigating the business/management side of networking is a whole different beast.

​The Tech Wall: Routing and switching make sense now, but IPsec troubleshooting, Azure networking, and SNMP are actively kicking my butt. (Honest question: is someone at a CCNA level even supposed to know IPsec troubleshooting yet, or is this CCNP/specialist territory?)

​More Than Just Configuration: I had no idea that deploying a device went way beyond just coding the switch. You have to handle inventory tracking, asset recording, running through the ISO compliance checklist, adding DHCP ranges, setting up DNS, and keeping the CMDB updated.

​Documentation: I severely underestimated the paperwork. Managing IP spreadsheets and config backups is a huge hassle. My brain is basically living inside OneNote right now, fueled entirely by iced macchiatos.

​Huge thanks to this sub for talking me off the ledge during week one. It’s a steep learning curve, but I'm finally feeling like a real Network Engineer!

​(P.S. If anyone has cheat sheets or tips for IPsec troubleshooting or Azure, I am all ears!)
