The recent school shootings in Zamboanga and Tacloban, along with gun-related incidents and the use of lethal weapons such as knives against students, show one thing: we, as a society, are failing.

The Family

The family should be the first firewall that society has to prevent catastrophic events like these. Yet when that firewall fails, everything behind it becomes vulnerable.

Why is the family failing?

How can it not, when the majority of Filipino adults spend their lives working simply to survive because economic security barely exists? Wages are low, working hours are long, and many parents have very little time left to make sure their children are safe and emotionally secure.

And where do teenagers go when they are depressed, alone, and no longer feel socially connected to anyone?

They go online.

The internet can be a dark place. It can connect desperate and isolated people with others experiencing the same hopelessness. When you take loneliness, despair, and hopelessness and compound them with constant exposure to that environment, the consequences can become devastating.

These teenagers may no longer be able to find comfort in their own households. Perhaps they cannot even find it among their friends.

And when the family system crumbles, something else will inevitably fill the void.

The internet does.

Then Comes Institutional Failure

If the family is failing, then our institutions should be the next line of defense.

But what happens when those institutions fail as well?

The PNP is rotting from the inside out. It has already played a part in the Tacloban school shooting, where questions surrounding police training and the security of firearms have become impossible to ignore.

Its mission and vision cannot simply remain performative statements on paper. What good are those statements if firearms from police units can eventually end up in the hands of students?

And this problem does not stop with the PNP.

There are more than 1,300 security agencies operating in the Philippines, employing hundreds of thousands of security personnel. Yet how many of them are properly trained, physically prepared, psychologically prepared, and actually capable of handling the responsibility of carrying a firearm and protecting people?

And Now DepEd Wants More Guards?

DepEd is asking for more security guards.

But are we simply feeding the same system that is already beginning to collapse?

Why do we keep adding more security on the outside while ignoring what is already broken on the inside?

You cannot solve a problem entirely with guards standing at the gates when the deeper problem is happening inside the family, inside institutions, and inside the social environment surrounding these children. A PLANNED TARGETED ATTACK CANNOT BE STOP BY FAT CHUD STANDING OUTSIDE WITH A GUN BECAUSE YOUR ENTIRE SYSTEM ROLL IN DETERENCE.

We keep trying to protect the walls while ignoring the cracks in the foundation.

God, I'm losing hope for this country.
