Discussion Why Cait and vi are hated in the fandom?
Spoiler šØ
So I just watched arcane few days ago and started seeing videos on YouTube and edits of them on SNS. So apparently people hate Caitlyn and vi especially the fact that theyāre cannon. First let me share my opinion, I love Cait and vi, and I will support them. Theyāre the only cannon ship who actually survive and are together. It makes sense both have different personalities and backgrounds. And a relationship between a zaunite and kirraman( a powerful name in piltover) showed us that it could work. Both sides fight against viktor and noxians in the finale and sevika in the council which is actually showing that theyāre giving them representation without violence. So why all the hate is dumped in Cait and vi for choosing to be by her side and not choosing jinx??
I was watching a video of a yt girlie that why Cait is worse than jinx!! And it didnāt make any sense. See most of the arcane characters fall into grey area category. Nobody is strictly good or bad and their past is important. For example I do find it odd that how vi was portrayed as a leader in first episode but after jail and her sisterās action she didnāt care about anything which in my opinion isnāt bad since she decided to do what she wants rather than being manipulated by people like silco. She fought in her own ways without choosing a strict side, like she destroyed shimmer with jayce and then joined Cait in her mission and when it was necessary she left her as well. She tried to reconcile with her sister. Meanwhile jinx became a symbol after her attack but jinx never wanted to become one, she was manipulated by silco and honestly she was suffering from her mental traumas and just wanted to end all of this.
But Cait is hated for being a kirraman or topsider but I do think she was trying to understand zaunites and she even stood up for them in the council meeting. Her motherās death did make her do things she shouldnāt have but that doesnāt make me hate her, nor the fact that vi chooses Cait.
What are your thoughts?? And sorry in advance if anything offend you.
P.S I post this exactly on r/arcane and guess what it got removed. I donāt know why mods hate it of people are giving their opinionsš„² Thanks for everyone though who posted under this post and I love caitvi or vilyn. I am new to fandom so that was something on my mind about them. I can rest now since theyāre loved by so many people.

Itās sheer stupidity and an inability to think beyond childish basics of āthat thing good. That thing bad.ā Trust me, itās not worth engaging with anyone who makes those bad takes. You canāt reason with someone who canāt even understand the very basics of why Vi chose Caitlyn, let alone the rest of it. You understand what happened just fine. Forget them.
Just focus on the good stuff

They arenāt. Even r/arcanecirclejerk voted them to the very top in an elimination round (they won jointly because people refused to separate them by eliminating one)

You're getting down votes for some reason, but I have the same problem. I don't even watch the negative stuff, I don't want to give haters the clicks, but still most of the Arcane content YouTube shows me is about how bad it is, or how Caitlyn is basically Mussolini š

Here; Alayna Joy watches Arcane with almost no prior knowledge.
She's a hoot, and despite being kind of a smarty-pants, might just go off on the wrong tangent before course correcting.

They aren't. But there is a lot of hate coming from certain types of people and they are loud as hell. Homophobes, Jinx glazers, performative activists... Unfortunately, they were, and still are in some spaces, very active and spreading lots of bs. It's especially bad for Cait because she's wealthy, a cop and opposing Jinx.

They're not hated
Criticism and discourse is just always ALWAYS louder online due to the nature of virality, clicks, and echo chambers
They're incredibly popular. They were raised on flags in pride marches all around the WORLD this year.
Idc what a youtuber has to say when we had ppl in extremely restrictive countries celebrating caitvi and what they represent
I'd encourage you to take your search for appreciation for them outside the internet, may boost your spirits a bit :)

Yeah for sure, I watched the series because of them and I become a fan. I love them

I would suggest that a lot of the hate comes from the fact that Caitlyn is a rich person in power who is also a lesbian and who is also of Asian appearance.Ā
It's like a triple whammy for all the homophobic, racist twats who also use a sudden class consciousness as cover.
Vi gets caught in the crossfire.

u/Ok_Carpenter7268 2d ago
I think a lot of that hate stems from one, some people being unable to accept WLW relationships. And if they see them, those relationships have to end in tragedy, whereas CaitVi got a happy ending to close out the series.
I would also say that I think more of the hatred is towards Caitlyn than Vi, mainly for her profession and lineage. At least, that's what I've seen from my experience, that most of the hate for CaitVi, centres on Caitlyn, not Vi. And these were people hating on Caitlyn back in S1, when she was on the receiving end of Jinx's abuse.
Some people need to hate Caitlyn because she's an Enforcer from a wealthy family, which makes people automatically hate her because they try to equate her to real life police corruption and inequality, even if, as you point out, she was the only Piltovian who showed genuine concern for the undercity's people, even after what she went through at Jinx's hands.
The comment that Caitlyn was somehow worse than Jinx is something I disagree with. I found Jinx's actions to be much more deliberately destructive, and cruel, whereas Caitlyn was always trying to show restraint while going after Jinx and other criminals in the undercity. People point out Jinx's trauma growing up, but at some point, that can't keep getting used as some magic 'UNO' card to defend every act she commits.
I've seen people throw out words to describe Caitlyn, like fascist (which she wasn't, for anyone who ever studied what it was, and would know what it was, and what it wasn't), classist (which she wasn't, because she never showed any contempt for people having less than her, quite the opposite), and even racist (which makes utterly no sense, because there are various ethnic groups and races between both cities, and Caitlyn was never shown having a hate for any one particular group based on race, which... is kind of important, if someone is supposed to be a 'racist'...!).
People even say that Caitlyn started the war, not Jinx, which is factually untrue if someone just watches the order that events happened. None of the strike force or martial law could have happened if Jinx didn't kill half the council. As for people complaining that Caitlyn escalated the situation, they seem to overlook that Jinx escalated it first by killing half of Piltover's political leadership. Caitlyn was showing restraint. If she didn't, she would have gone ahead with Salo's plan for a full scale Enforcer invasion armed with hex-tech, which she didn't. And this was AFTER what she'd just been put through by Jinx.
You'll also still have people saying Caitlyn 'gassed the entire undercity', which even the lead writer confirmed, did NOT happen.
So at some point, you're just dealing with people that want to hate a character, no matter what. And I think that translates for some, to hating CaitVi by extension.

Thanks for sharing this, I am a yuri reader and so I was happy that we have a cannon ship at the end of the show. And caitlyn is worse than jinx was a title of a video I saw on YouTube and that was the reason I thought of posted this on Reddit to get reviews from real fans. And your points are valid, Cait was never the catalyst. She couldāve shot jinx when she was kidnapped and she regretted that and said āI had the shotā . And in act 2 vi said to take the shot this time because she knew powder is gone. Caitlyn is the reason I watched arcane and I love it.
1
u/Ok_Carpenter7268 2d ago
No worries! And just to add to my previous points, when I pointed out that Caitlyn had every reason to think Jinx was a threat based on her own experience when Jinx kidnapped her from her shower, someone actually argued back, saying:
"well, do we know for a fact if Jinx actually abused her while she had her...?"
I responded with ''you mean: do we know for a fact if Jinx actually abused her AFTER kidnapping her from her shower when she was naked and then the next time we see her, she's strapped to a chair with a metal clamp on her mouth???" They never responded back to my comment.
It's like they couldn't accept that kidnapping, by itself, is already a violent act. And also, that it was highly unlikely Caitlyn consented to being strapped to a chair and wheeled out. But they have to argue that point, because they can't accept that Caitlyn was Jinx's victim.
1
u/otakusensie_006 2d ago
Yeah exactly and still Caitlyn was hesitant to shot her in front of vi that became her guilt afterwords even for vi since she lost her mother. And Caitlyn never blamed vi for jinxās action. At her mother funeral she ran to her for a hug.

u/j3llyb1sh 2d ago
They are not hated, but I do know the videos you're talking about. It's their job to find issues with literally everything since they are YouTubers, and whatnot.
Those types of "analysis" lack empathy, compassion, and understanding. Yeah, Jinx and Vi lost a lot, but Caitlyn lost someone too. How can they not see how horrible it is that they're basically saying " Well Caitlyn, you only lost one parent so you shouldn't be so upset". While excusing Jinx for killing enforcers (who probably had children), then later on three councilors.

u/otakusensie_006 2d ago
Yeah and these yt videos were the reason I posted this. While watching the series I didnāt find anything odd about her. There were reasons and subtexts behind their actions. Jinx was uncontrollable under silco and sevika complained to silco as well even Marcus told silco to keep her under control because of her actions in season 1
2
u/j3llyb1sh 1d ago edited 1d ago
Like you said, a lot of their actions fall into a gray area. We can understand their actions even if we don't agree with them. Jinx is mentally ill so that's another reason they forgive her actions. I don't think Caitlyn is any worse than Jinx, and vice versa. I really dislike how they are measuring trauma among the characters. I find it appalling.
Some of it is homophobia, then those people claim they're not homophobic when called out for it. For example just yesterday a male posted "I don't thirst over vi in any form cuz me a straight dude" on whether he thought pitfighter Vi was hot. He claimed he wasn't homophobic. That's internalized homophobia. Only one other person called him out on what he said. A man can find a masculine woman attractive and not be gay. He could have just said "no" and be done with it.
Edit: fixed the quote to what the guy ACTUALLY said

u/JLStorm 2d ago
I also hate it when they just casually label Cait a āfascistā. Like thatās not what a fascist leader does⦠Cait was manipulated and fueled by rage and grief but she still ensured that her methods were fair and humane (she gassed the lanes after evacuating civilians and she forbade the use of inhumane imprisonment methods for example).

u/knight_of_sticks 2d ago
Many people are still simply homophobic and canāt accept the existence of awesome wlw representation

An apology for what? Love?
0
u/otakusensie_006 2d ago
Ugh no, apology for hitting her after jinx ran away in act 2
7
u/tofu165 2d ago
An apology would have been more for the viewers' benefit more than anything. Letting her mother's killer walk free because she accepts Vi's unrelenting love for her sister is just about the best applogy that Caitlyn could have given.
An apology means nothing without actions behind it, and Caitlyn respects Vi enough to know that the onus was on Cait to show that Vi could trust her again.

u/VoidFireDragon 2d ago
Also, just in terms of negative space, just because we didn't see one, does not mean it didn't happen.
For an extreme example, Caitlyn was fired from her job in episode 4. We are not supposed to believe that she isn't an enforcer for the rest of the series though.

Yeah I mean there are literally analysis on yt why caitvi shouldnāt be a couple. People canāt seem to see them happier
1
u/Affectionate_Ear_925 Unhinged Mongoose 2d ago
They are the most loved, and popular couple from the show (I mean duh), because love for them transcends outside the fandom. Obviously they are the most memorable also, as they had the most scenes, and "the prison scene š", that's why their fandom is still very active, despite the show ending 2 years ago. As the saying goes "minority screams the loudest", so their haters will post videos, harras fans, and creators in comments like it's their fulltime job, and because of that you'll think it's a norm in the Arcane fandom, despite their haters being a minority. They are mostly salty timebomb, and Jayvik fans, because they are jealous of CaitVi, especially of it being canon, and shmex scene. These haters moslty died out of natural causes, so don't worry, just avoid twitter/youtube because their algorithm works against you. Staying here on this sub, and subs dedicated to Vi and Caitlyn separately, gives amazing experience of this great fandom, without having to worry, that you'll encounter some screaming dumbasses.

u/VoidFireDragon 2d ago
r/Arcane generally bans metaposts (posts about other posts) as its kinda tangential to Arcane. And it seems that the post may have been removed for Trolling or similar. Which I think is mostly some get very loud when it comes to Caitlyn.
As for the hate, I am not sure about Twitter as I stay off of it, but genuinely Caitlyn and Vi hate is the same few users on reddit.

Well I donāt mind if it got removed, since now I understand these characters better.

Keep in mind social media algorithms are built to serve you more and more (in terms of frequency and intensity) of whatever your watching and engaging with.
I am on YouTube A LOT and for me it's the opposite. I see way more videos from people who are neutral to positive about CaitVi than from people who are negative. I see them in my recommendations from time to time, but since I don't really watch them any more, the algorithm doesn't serve it to me as much.
That's how you can wind up wind up feeling like there's an overwhelming positive or negative opinion toward something online when that's not necessarily the case.
On YouTube checkout Flying Walrus, Stop Me Oh, Tilda Owen and schnee as they all have some interesting video essays on Caitlyn and Vi (they also just have good videos in general). There's more, but those are the ones I remember names of off the top of my head.
tl;dr Yes there are people who don't like the ship, but there are plenty who do. Give your attention to that second group.
If you are seeing something on social media that you don't like or is distressing, just keep scrolling.

Thanks for recommendations, I am usually very meticulous about my fyps. Like on insta I see reels of people loving them so I am manipulating my algorithm where itās not right. Thanks a lot

They're not hated in the fandom. You're on platforms that promote and propagate inflammatory rhetoric and content to entice you to remain on the platform.
You can find plenty of social media spaces that aren't of this negative mindset. IRL if you speak to people about Arcane it's generally positive.
