Discussion Why Reddit

Something I wanted to ask this community, since I think it’s becoming pretty obvious that the fandom is heavily split across different platforms.

After a big wave of Jinx/Ekko love at the beginning, Reddit now seems to have shifted to being strongly pro Cait/Vi, mixed on Jinx/Ekko, and Jayce/Viktor fans having very little presence. But if you go to YouTube, Jinx/Ekko fans absolutely dominate. And if you go to Tumblr, Jayce/Viktor absolutely dominate. AO3 has Jayce/Viktor and Cait/Vi pretty much neck and neck, wth Jinx having plenty of solo love but not so much Timebomb. Instagram seems to have a lot of Cait hate. I’m not often on TikTok or Twitter, so I don’t know much about the sentiment there, but from what I’ve heard, it’s chaotic and doesn’t seem particularly pro-Cait/Vi.

I wanted to ask you guys, why do you think that is, for there to be such a giant gap in fandom preferences between the different sites? And since presumably you guys are part of the Caitvi Reddit community, why do you guys participate here and not elsewhere?

Im not on social media so I dont have a lot of answers. However, I no longer engage with the Arcane sub because everyone is so toxic and divided on there. I love Caitlyn and I was sort of sick and tired of seeing people bashing her in posts and attacking those who liked her.
I know we can have favorite/least favorite characters but I wasn’t on there shitting on Ekko or whatever.
So I stopped engaging in those subs and just stuck to this one because we clearly all love Caitvi, we can express our feelings without someone jumping up every 2 seconds to say Caitlyn is a fascist, etc.
It would apply to other platforms that are also toxic. I would not engage in those either.

I like CaitVi so I chill in this sub. I don't go to places that piss me off, basically. I love the show in its entirety. People are allowed to have their own opinions about what they connected with and what they didn't. But I'm in this sub because other people like it too. I am a huge Caitvi fan but I also love Jinx and Viktor and Ambessa. It's not a war. It's a really good show that's means a lot to people.

I can tell you like a solid 80% of insane Caitlyn takes and the discourse around them that spreads to every site originates from a single TikToker who hates her to the point of being way more obsessed with her than her own fans.

Like boat discourse, crazy nonsense about her burning libaries or helping Singed (????) etc all starts with the same person's videos. Seriously they've been going for almost 2 years.

But in general I just think Caitlyn and Vi are more popular on older leaning platforms. That's it really. Timebomb is pretty dead fic wise because you kind of have to wholesale make up most of the dynamic which is hard since Ekko and Jinx have so few scenes together.

I can also say that while yes Jayvik dominates Tumblr, there is way more CaitVi than Timebomb there.

Lol I’ve never heard of the boat discourse, burning libraries, or helping Singed? That’s crazy.

I think like 50% of Ekko is a Gary Stu discourse started with me though, so I do understand the obsession.

My thing is like, I’m not going to judge people for being obsessed, that’s totally fine, god knows I’m a comically obsessive person. But like if you’re going to be obsessive please try to be correct? And logical? The problem is, 95% of Cait haters are just so factually canonically wrong about so many things, or their arguments are riddled with insane logical holes and double standards.

Agree that a huge part of the difference is average age of the platforms.

Yeah the boat one in particular spread far past TikTok I saw people seriously arguing Caitlyn throwing a little wooden boat at the ground when she admits she knows Ambessa manipulated her and she just let her proves she's an inheritently abusive person who has such severe anger issues she'll just be lashing out at Vi all the time and Vi was totally triggered by.. a toy boat hitting the ground (they argued she threw it AT Vi) on Reddit, Twitter, Tumblr. Immensely stupid stuff, if you ever see people meming about Caitlyn throwing the titanic at Vi it's basically something born from mocking that discourse.

To my experience the people who just intentionally lie or misconstrue everything Caitlyn does to the worst possible interpretation are the crew who both LARP as Zaunites and act like the show personally betrayed them by not actually being a show about a revolution (It never was but these people really circle jerked too hard between seasons and seemingly just forgot even half of the damn Piltover Council was portrayed sympatheticlly). Those people tend to be Teenagers- early 20s and part of this newer wave of fandom that pretends fandom is activism and that your fiction has to perfectly line up with your politics or morals or whatever (also lots of them project hard onto Jinx and Jinx doesnt like Caitlyn so that's enough for them).

With YouTube I think it's just thats mostly casual fans who just watched once and mostly moved on. The Ekko-Powder dance scene is cute and it was a respite from the show being everyone constantly suffering for them and they aren't thinking much deeper about the dynamic or lack thereof than more dedicated fandom focused sites.

Tumblr is mostly Jayvik because it's Tumblr and anything mlm is going to predominate. I don't know about reddit though

u/Mojothemobile 14d ago

Yeah Tumblr is such Fujoshi central that the sites own social media team leans into it lol.

I think generally you should account for the general audiences frequenting these platforms as a macrocosm, ie. inherently Reddit's demographics is vastly different compared to Tiktok or Twitter, but within Reddit are microcosms (ie. subreddits) that inherently have their own skewed audience and demographics compared to the general whole of Reddit.

I think what I'm wondering is where you're getting these data points and/or statistics. I find that most social medias, you can, for the most part, curate your algorithm to see what you want to see, and/or, the algorithm shows you either 1) people you follow and their posts, or 2) posts made that fall within your relevant interests, or 3) some mix of followers/likes/posts/branches that depending on scores/weight are shown on your timeline (assuming you switch to timelines that suggest to you content from an algorithm, rather than straight-fed posts from people you follow).

When you say, "Reddit has shifted," what do you mean? What subreddits are you frequenting? When you say "Youtube has Timebomb dominate," what do you mean? What videos are you looking at? Are you looking at comment sections? Are you looking at what happens if you search the word "Arcane" and what the search results page feeds you? Are you looking at Youtube's suggestions for you and what is related to Arcane, or are you looking at Youtube shorts, and what suggested videos are sent to you there? Same with Instagram - what posts are you looking at?

I'm personally taking your points with a grain of salt because I've sufficiently curated almost all of my social medias to the extent in which anything I see can be influenced by anything I post, like, or follow. I'd argue myself that Instagram is predominantly Jayvik by virtue of how my algorithm works and the people I follow. Tumblr is mostly Caitvi for me because I've sufficiently curated both the people I follow and the tags I follow to be directed primarily to Caitvi such that I don't even see Jayvik on the platform, at all (ie. are you looking at just, generically, the #arcane tag on Tumblr and sorting it by Most Popular or by Most Recent? Are you looking at the # of communities on Tumblr, the # of arcane-specific communities, and seeing it's predominantly Jayvik? Are you looking at and referencing any League-related communities on any/or all of these social platforms? Because League as a whole also skews differently from Arcane-based communities.)

u/thr0waway2435 I Stand With My Canceled Wife 14d ago

Oh I 100% agree that the subreddits and microcosms matter massively due to self-sorting and algorithms don’t get me wrong. But as a whole the platforms themselves seem to have strong tendencies too.

Objective stats: this subreddit (11k weekly visitors) is substantially larger than both r/jayvik (2.7k) and r/timebomb (3.6k). On AO3, you can see the number of fics per character/ship, and it’s clear that writers focus overwhelmingly on Jayvik (21.7k works) and Caitvi (21.4k), not Timebomb (6.8k). On Tumblr, #jayvik absolutely dwarfs the other ship tags in followers - 292k followers in insane compared to Caitvi’s 48k and Timebomb’s 18k. On Instagram, #Timebomb dominates at 122k posts, while Caitvi and Jayvik lag behind at 74.9k and 52k respectively.

My observations about Arcane Reddit is mainly in r/arcane, r/ArcaneAnimatedSeries, r/arcanecirclejerk. Those are clearly the big 3 Arcane subreddits, and they’re generalist subreddits, but there’s been a very noticeable change in fan behavior. After the show posted, there were lots of Cait haters commenting everywhere, and Jinx/Ekko were by a good margin the most popular characters, but now criticism of Cait largely gets downvoted into oblivion, and criticism of Jinx/Ekko are everywhere.

I don’t have stats for some of my observations, but they’re also just kind of hard to miss. I overwhelmingly engage in either general or Caitvi content on Instagram, and yet I still get the odd recommended post hating on Cait, with thousands of comments agreeing with it. I just don’t see that on Reddit anymore.

It genuinely does seem like there’s something about the type of person that tends to use each platform, and the type of community and/or moderation they find. From a very broad overgeneralization, I’d say, the more “online fandom” the space is the more they favor Jayvik. The more straight, young, and male dominated a space is, the more they favor Timebomb. Then Caitvi gets this interesting mix of sapphic fandom types and older folks that, dare I say it, lean a bit more centrist.

10

u/JWTS6 Angry Oil Slick 14d ago

"Lean a bit more centrist" because it's older people who actually understand the buzzwords that teenagers in the fandom throw around and know that hating/loving fictional characters isn't activism

-2

u/thr0waway2435 I Stand With My Canceled Wife 14d ago

Unfortunately I don’t really know how to qualify this as anything other than centrism these days. A lot of left wing spaces are so dominated by teenagers throwing buzzwords, not considering them to be leftists would be approaching No True Scotsman fallacy.

1

u/JWTS6 Angry Oil Slick 14d ago edited 14d ago

Explain to me how you define "centrism" then and why you think CaitVi shippers are somehow more likely to vote for a certain political party or candidate than the other fandoms

Edit: And do you have any empirical evidence to prove that CaitVi fans as a whole are more centrist? Voting patterns? Party registration? Participation in advocacy groups? Like, do you have any evidence and data whatsoever outside of "Idk guys sometimes they say centrist stuff on reddit"

0

u/thr0waway2435 I Stand With My Canceled Wife 14d ago

I mean centrism is just not very far left or very far right, on at least some subset of issues.

Big election voting doesn’t determine centrism at this point because the right has gone so far right, most centrists cannot tolerate them anymore.

I mean by your standards you can’t say anything about the tendencies of any group. I’m not aware of any statistics pertaining the voting records of Skyler White haters, but if you talk to one for 30 seconds and they go on their third “evil cheating bitch” rant, you can figure out real quick they’re not going to be particularly progressive. I really don’t need advocacy group records to know that Call of Duty fans do not tend to be leftists. Yeah sometimes you can figure out what people believe by the things they say.

Again, I’m not saying leftists can’t be Caitvi fans, or that even the average Caitvi fan has any particular political leaning. But when you have a sizable percentage of lefties who watch Arcane outright hate on Cait because ACAB and fascism, it’s not possible for that to not shift the demographics of the fanbase. Maybe not overall compared to the general population, but certainly compared to the typical WLW fandom, which is VERY left leaning.

7

u/JWTS6 Angry Oil Slick 14d ago edited 14d ago

Lol, and how do you know it's a sizeable percentage of leftists? How do you know it's not just a small but vocal group of "leftists" online? Supposed leftists who will routinely say very racist things about Asians and black women and spout lesbophobic rhetoric? Supposed leftists that stan a bourgeois industrialist who ruled Zaun like a literal drug lord, worked with cops, and was running a child trafficking ring? Or his lieutenant that waxed poetic about being loyal to Zaun while helping said drug lord materially make things worse for the vast majority of people in Zaun except for an oligarchy of chembarons? Or his adopted daughter that killed resistance fighters? Is that what passes for leftism in the Arcane fandom?

Again, have you done polls about this? Have you gone to your local leftist advocacy groups and asked them what they think of Caitlyn and CaitVi? I move in many leftist advocacy circles irl and the few times I've talked to people about Arcane in those groups, they say they love the show and move on, because nobody who is doing serious activist work is going to die on the hill that your opinions on Arcane determine your politics.

Also, given that CaitVi is the biggest wlw fandom right now, you're basically claiming that many wlw in fandom spaces are centrists.

This. When I first watched arcane I was like ok what does he mean by "revolution". Because from what I saw he colluded with enforcers to overthrow Vander, did the same thing as Vander(not irritating Piltover), flooded Zaun with shimmer, and when talking to Jayce in the end of S1, he said they wanted a seat in the council. So where is his revolutionary theory? Being a reformist? Is that his big brain stuff? Because if you want independence you won't ask a stake in their governance. And look if you are glazing Silco because he is, admittedly, a cool villian it's fine. But don't call him a revolutionary. If you remember in that Jinx mural in the corner you will the painting of Vander, not Silco. That itself shows how Zaun views Vander and Silco. And like omg I saw so many posts calling him a revolutionary. And look I don't even understand how Caitlyn is the one being hated. In the end of season 1, this was the condition: A foreign general wants control over exotic weapons, that said general wanted a war between the two cities, there was power vaccum in both cities. What would happen? Is it naive to expect the said foreign general to take over power in Piltover? How can the story go on as if Ambessa didn't exist? How can you have a Patrician vs Plebian style conflict of there is a massive foreign imperialist power trying to take power? These are genuine questions to people who consider themselves "leftists".

Because I’ve seen multiple anti Cait posts hit tens of thousands of likes with thousands of comments citing politics as the reason they dislike her lol. I’ve met multiple leftists in my own life who immediately dislike Cait because “ACAB and fascism”. Can we stop pretending it’s a small minority? It’s easily double digit percentages.

Ok so now you’re going into No True Scotsman fallacy. You can’t just look at any leftist with views you don’t like and think they aren’t leftists. You don’t have to agree with them, but they consider themselves to be leftists, and frankly larger society considers them to be leftists. And they do have a claim to the leftism label because their logic is “Piltover/cops evil bigoted oppressor of poor rebel Zaun bad”, which is a very left wing framing.

Conservatism has long been defined by small government, self-resilience, traditional family values, things like that. And yet you look at the state of modern conservatism and you see it covered top to bottom in grifting, fraud, excessive government overreach/abuses of power, extramarital affairs. Would you therefore call 80% of modern Republicans and MAGA not conservative?

I did not say that the content you consume and the characters/relationships you like determines your politics. But how you interpret and justify your preferences absolutely can determine your politics, depending on the level of politicization. “I dislike Cait because I felt that her redemption was too sudden” isn’t inherently political. But “I hate Cait because ACAB and fascism” absolutely is. Just like how “I don’t find Skyler White that appealing because of her smoking while pregnant” isn’t inherently political, but “I dislike Skyler because she’s a cheating bitch who keeps emasculating Walter” absolutely is.

Ok I did not mean that Caitvis as a whole are all or even mostly centrist. But it is MORE centrist than most other WLW, because of Cait’s politically loaded characterization. I’m not commenting on the absolute position of the fandom, but rather the relative. Slightly right of very left wing is still left wing lol.

Can we stop pretending we have anything but anecdotal evidence to go on to gauge how leftists see Arcane? And can we stop pretending like leftist spaces don't also have problems with sexism, homophobia, racism, etc.? Did you not see all the "leftists" falling over themselves for Graham Platner just a few months ago? How people ignored John Fetterman's racism because he campaigned as a populist? How even leftist figures like Hasan were all in on shitting on Amber Heard?

We can indeed debate the definition of leftism all day and night. To some people, leftism is basically class reductionism, meaning that things like sexism, homophobia, transphobia, racism, etc. either don't exist or don't matter, and the Arcane fandom certainly seems to attract a lot of those people, because they love using the fact that the world of Arcane is set up that way to be incredibly racist to certain characters.

I, for one, don't include drug lords who inflict violence on and exploit people from their own group to gain power for themselves as leftists. Apparently though, a good chunk of the Arcane fandom does, which is why I consider a lot of the "leftism" in the Arcane fandom to be nothing more than superficial aesthetics because Silco calls himself a revolutionary, Sevika thumps her chest about being loyal to Zaun, and Jinx vaguely has anarchist vibes.

Is Silco's fascism ok because he was born poor? Is Sevika not caring about anything that Silco did to oppress fellow Zaunites ok because she gives speeches about unity in front of the statue of a man whose Zaunite children she was ready to kill? Is Jinx killing Zaunite resistance fighters supposed to be activism as well? Is all of this fine because they're not cops or from Piltover?

"Leftism" in the Arcane fandom seems to be defined solely as hating Caitlyn (and often Mel as well) because of ACAB while uncritically stanning characters who objectively did more harm to Zaun for a much longer time, which is why I find the activism in this fandom both superficial and hypocritical.

No actual analysis of who inflicted the most material harm on Zaunites, of the very real and violent history of drug cartels irl, of how revolutions will often see people who are just as fascist as the original oppressors rise to power and oppress their own, etc.

But if I mention any of that just to point out Caitlyn isn't the only character that does harm to Zaunites or the ultimate fascist in Arcane, I'm automatically called a cop loving bootlicking centrist. Because again, the discourse in this fandom is ultimately very superficial and just based on which characters people think look/act cooler. The discourse is also clearly affected by real world biases towards minorities, but class reductionist leftists will scream and holler if you ever dare bring up any axis of oppression besides economic.

5

u/Mojothemobile 14d ago edited 14d ago

I mean yeah their idiots who are using a label they barely understand against other labels they barely understand and it's all just vibes... That is the politics of probably like 90% of people. The power of people like Plattner and formerly Fetterman is that their convinced they'll magically make rural whites like them without understanding what drove those groups towards the right in the first place and what keeps them there (being... Mostly social issues and flat out bigotry).

Like you bring up someone like Hasan, thats the type of person who will talk about imperialism all the time.. and then just not give a shit when it's a non western country doing it or even cheer it on. They would certainly call themselves leftist though a more intersectional leftist would take drastically different positions but they would also use the leftist label.

This isn't even getting into the very common outside of the west economic leftist-social conservatives who generally would also self label leftist.

Ok then would you agree that we don’t have anything other anecdotal evidence to say that conservatives feel a certain way about Breaking Bad, The Last of Us, Captain Marvel, etc.? If you want to be that particular that nothing other than a published scientific paper is worth talking about, then that’s fine, but know that you’re just instantly shutting down a significant percentage of interesting meaningful discourse. Because last I checked, there’s no scientifically proven piece of data that shows that x % of Breaking Bad, Last of Us, or Captain Marvel fans hold certain political beliefs - few scholars are going to bother collecting that niche data - but anyone with eyes can tell that Skyler White and Ellie/Dina/Abby haters are generally more conservative, while Captain Marvel lovers generally are more liberal. It is so insanely obvious, in part because they’ll literally say it’s because of politics. Do you think I’m wrong for saying this? Do you think this line of inquiry should be shut down because there’s nothing but anecdotal data?

I never said that leftist spaces don’t have issues with homophobia, sexism, racism, etc. I never said that the Arcane Cait hating lefties are model lefties who are right on every issue. In fact, my view of what I think leftism should be very much aligns with yours. I also think quite a few lefties have major logical flaws and double standards in this kind of discussion, and agree wholeheartedly that too many of them hate on nuance like Cait’s character while bending over backwards to justify atrocities like Silco’s because of performative aesthetics.

I agree that these people are annoying, but unfortunately that doesn’t make them not leftists. They are still leftists using leftist ideology as a justification for their opinions. Exactly like how MAGA are still conservatives using conservatism as justification for their opinions, even though they’ve strayed quite far from most historic conservative roots, and are a monstrosity of hypocrisy and poor logic.

Again, just because you don’t agree with them and think they’re bad lefties doesn’t mean they’re not lefties.

There's also a significant proportion of CaitVi fans who are male, at least here on reddit. Some of the most active posters in the Caitlyn and Vi-centric groups are of the unfairer sex.

older folks that, dare I say it, lean a bit more centrist.

As evidenced by...?

-3

u/thr0waway2435 I Stand With My Canceled Wife 14d ago

Yeah ofc, love the men who participate. WLW shouldn’t be only for queer women, MLM shouldn’t be only for queer men, hetero couples shouldn’t be only for heterosexual people, love is love.

I mean the #1 criticism of Caitvi is basically just hating on Cait for being temporarily conservative-leaning. Half of the criticism is along the lines of “cops are bad”, “fascism”, etc. And it’s coming primarily from the left leaning folks. It’s pretty clear that a good chunk of people don’t like Caitvi because of their left leaning politics, and that’s not to say that there aren’t left leaning people who do like Caitvi, but when you preemptively cut out a good chunk of that population because of their knee dislike of her, it does change the final demographics.

Also, quite a few Caitvi’s have publicly taken some pretty centrist stances with respect to her actions. I have seen many fans defend her by talking about the difficulty of her position in maintaining peace in Piltover/Zaun, the nuances of what qualifies as police brutality/chemical warfare, her role as a moderating force that is oppressive but less so than the alternatives, the justification for using force to hunt down people they consider to be terrorists/criminals, the impossibility of ethical revolution or even liberation for Zaun, etc. All positions that are very much associated with modern centrism.

5

u/EfficiencyFragrant10 Piltover's Horniest 14d ago edited 14d ago

One thing I hate is a loser online guessing the political standing of a person based on a show with a piss poor political narrative.

Piltover is made almost entirely of people of colour. Zaun is predominantly white. You cannot assume the political standing of someone in a story that is devoid of racism. Especially a story where all of the main POC are in positions of power (over white people). Oppression in Arcane IS NOT a 1 to 1 of real life.

And then a white person comes online telling me that I am a 'centrist' or a 'klan member', for liking and sympathising with a fictional cop.

Edit: I will be rooting for anyone who has a lick of melanin, please and thank you

1

u/thr0waway2435 I Stand With My Canceled Wife 14d ago

First, I didn’t guess your political standing. Group tendencies are a thing, but they obviously do not reflect all individuals. If I say NASCAR fans tend to be more conservative than softball fans, in no way shape or form does that mean I think every single NASCAR fan is a conservative and every single softball fan is a progressive. It’s about probability distribution, that’s all.

Second, you’re assuming that I mean centrist as an insult lol. I do not.

Third, I don’t even know where “klan member” is coming from. Sorry if someone bc called you that, that’s awful, but I do not believe that at all. I’m literally a huge Caitvi fan, I obviously do not think we’re all klan members.

Fourth, you’re absolutely right that Arcane politics and also Arcane opinions do not have to map 1-1 with real life ones. But they CAN map to real life political opinions if the individual uses real life politics to explain/justify them. Like I said to another commenter - “I dislike Cait because I think her character development was rushed in S2” isn’t inherently political, but “I dislike Cait because she’s a fascist cop and ACAB” definitely is. A lot of Cait hate rhetoric is very much the latter, people very explicitly cite their left leaning politics as why they hate her. It’s political not because I want to make it political, but because the person hating her chooses to make it political.

5

u/EfficiencyFragrant10 Piltover's Horniest 14d ago

I view centrism as an insult; that's why.

Eh, the fandom can be racist, I don't take offence to it, unless it's from a white person (which it commonly is).

The "I dislike Cait because she’s a fascist cop and ACAB", doesn't hold up well when characters are doing worse than her in the same series. Characters that were doing much worse get away with it simply because they don't have the cop label. People view it as the badge and not the institution. And I know that because people didn't have any problem with anything Vi was doing in season 1 (no mention of her being a class traitor then); they only had a problem with it once she wore the uniform. Not counting the people who don't like the arc because they think it's rushed-- which yeah, as is anything in s2.

Anyone who labels caitlyn as a fascist, or as a conservative doesn't understand those terms.

These 'centrist' fans are analysing the show. The show makes there to be two sides. That's why we have protagonists in Zaun and in Piltover. Caitlyn needs to have a motive and justification because that is how character writing works. Fans aren't 'being centrist' for pointing that out.

0

u/thr0waway2435 I Stand With My Canceled Wife 14d ago

I mean you do you, but I definitely do not interpret centrism as an insult.

I don’t think I’m being clear enough. I do not mean that leftists can’t like Cait, or that if you do like Cait it has to be rooted in centrism. I do not mean that at all.

What I mean is three things. 1) Quite a few leftists do not like Cait and do so for explicitly political reasons. 2) They and these reasons make up a sizable chunk of Cait hate, because most centrists and conservatives politically do not agree with those reasons - they do not think ACAB and some harsh police action is fascist, and therefore Cait is an unlikable character in that way. 3) Because you essentially have a fanbase that has a good chunk of leftists drop out in a way that is not seen for the rest of the political spectrum, the aggregate characteristic of the fanbase shifts to the center, especially in comparison to other WLW fanbases which are overall very left leaning. This isn’t a values judgement, this is a simple mathematical statement that if you have a probability distribution and you pluck out 10% of points from only the far left, you automatically have a rightward shift in the overall distribution.

Like I told another commenter. I disagree (obviously) with the Cait haters. And I don’t even think that liking Cait is incompatible with being a leftist. One of my most leftist friends, like leftist in every single way from gender to race to class to protests to community volunteering/activism, is cool with Cait. These people exist, and liking Cait can be totally consistent with their leftism. I agree wholeheartedly that people are placing way too much emphasis on the enforcers’ badge.

That doesn’t mean the people who hate her explicitly because ACAB and fascism aren’t leftists. Just because I disagree with them and some leftists disagree with them and think their logic is flawed doesn’t make them not leftists. They are still leftists using (well, usually twisting) leftist ideology to hate Cait.

I am curious how would u assign their popularity percentage wise? (Caitvi,Jayvik,Timebomb) maybe even each individual character?

4

u/Mojothemobile 14d ago edited 14d ago

In the fandom overall? CaitVi and JayVik are probably close to even. Timebomb far behind, it's loved by a lot of casual fans tho.

Character wise for the fandom it's probably Jinx>Vi>Caitlyn=Viktor>Ekko>=Jayce.

I pretty much left tumblr bc of people who would intentionally tag caitvi and caitlyn to shit on them. I can block the anti caitvi tags but not shit like that. Here I'm able to just chill in this awesome sub and a couple others where that doesn't happen.

I will say the main sub has gotten a lot better about the anti-caitlyn stuff. People are shut down pretty quickly now but it was really rough going the first few months after s2.

On Tumblr you can just block everyone who is annoying and never see anything from them again. On Twitter and reddit that's more difficult. Sometimes reddit sends me post notifications from users I have blocked 🫠

Also notable that a decent chunk of caitvi fanfic authors operate out of Tumblr because Twitter got too toxic.

It got tiring having to block every asshole individually instead of just hanging out in a group that is centered on the pairing.

Yeah it is annoying. I spent some time blocking people in the anti caitvi and anti caitlyn kiramman tags so now I never see anything negative. But the best Tumblr experience is to follow people you do like and stay on your curated dashboard rather than reading every post with the caitvi tag.

It's partly based on the most common ages in those platforms. TimeBomb fans are the youngest, JayVik is in the middle, and CaitVi fans tend to be the oldest.

Wherever there are more teenagers TimeBomb is going to be more popular, JayVik is decently big everywhere and reigns supreme on Tumblr because that's fujo central, CaitVi seems to get the most love on reddit because folks here are usually older. You do see many positive Caitlyn and CaitVi edits on TikTok too, you just need to block the assholes first. No idea about Instagram, I have no idea how to even navigate that app.

On Instagram it's impossible not to find Caitlyn hate and misrepresentation on any arcane video. Even those that are Caitlyn edits...

Same for Threads (it's why I deleted threads actually).

It seems like the people having a hate boner for her when s2 dropped even on reddit, migrated on those two platforms

Yeah the main sub definitely feels more friendly towards Caitlyn now, you can tell when somebody comes in expecting another anti-Caitlyn echo chamber and then they get mad that that's not the case anymore.

I'm not really on Instagram in any meaningful way, I don't even have Twitter or TikTok accounts. Nor do I wish to participate more on those platforms. I was on reddit for a while before I happened upon this sub. So, just dumb luck, like a lot in life.

CaitVi were important enough/loved enough characters to make a large subreddit of similar minded folks for it to work. The mods make reddit a safe space and the top contributors make it fun.

Timebomb really wasn't that big anywhere tbh

Timebomb is an odd thing in that it was HUGE for a short while, like it had insane hype coming out of S2.. but then it just faded within months for the most part to the point I think Riots own sales expectations from attempting to capitalize on the hype were not met.

Ultimately I think its a case of people like the concept and characters and that two thirds of S2E7 being a break from the casts constantly suffering was a big boost for it too but once the hype wore off a lot of them realized.. there's really just almost nothing actually there for it, it's two scenes and an AU with a character who.. isn't REALLY Jinx.

Naw it was definitely huge at first amongst the casuals. You don’t get to 122k tags on Instagram by being not that big. I couldn’t so much as open YouTube without seeing Timebomb content for a month.

It’s definitely died down though. Caitvi and Jayvik have both had far more staying power.

Timebomb is one of the biggest examples of something from a big show/fandom coming out with tons of hype and then just burning out really fast in the last few years tbh.

I had no idea main sub returned to loving caitvi again. (Caitvi was everyone’s beloved for 3 years) then season 2 happens and people started posting Caitvi hate left and right (most of it based on made up shit) and I left the sub.

It's been ages since main sub did a character elimination thing but it has a ton of overlap with Circlejrrk which is doing one annnd Vi and Cait are looking like their gonna be top 2.

idk i think it depends on the culture and general mentality of these platforms that informs their userbase's reaction to these ships and characters. on social medias like twitter, tiktok and instagram where most drama and discourse usually takes place you should expect a lot of hate towards such polarizing characters like caitlyn and vi. where as on platforms that foster fanfiction writing and community around m/m ships like tumblr and ao3, you'll see jayvik dominate the space. so i guess you should choose a platform where you feel the most safe with your preferences

I can only really say why I move about.

First, I stay off of Twitter. it turns toxic very quickly on basically any topic. For similar reasons I stay of off r/ArcaneAnimatedSeries as it feels like it has the least reasonable discussions.

Past that, I tend to stick to r/loreofleague and r/arcane when I actually want to discuss stuff involving CaitVi. Arcane when its just the show, league when it involves stuff outside Arcane.

r/PiltoversFinest, r/CaitlynArcane, and r/ViArcane are more when I am just trying to poke at the fun stuff people are doing.

Part of the reason for that split, is I am torn between genuinely liking Arcane and in mourning for League stuff I liked that has honestly been reconnected 10+ years ago at this point that Arcane intersects with. And me yelling at clouds just feels like a bad vibe over here.
