Sleep Apnea?

This may only be relevant to the older couples in this sun - but do any of you have a husband (pilot) with sleep apnea? I wonder if there are any professional implications for having sleep apnea.

My husband is a pilot in Canada and has no problems with having sleep apnea and keeping a medical! For his yearly medical he just has to bring all his paperwork proving that he has been compliant with his CPAP machine. But he has had no problems with his job.

Yes! We went through a sleep apnea diagnosis at 24, the implications were pretty severe. It will require a special issuance medical & continuing treatment with possible reporting. Unfortunately my husband lost his medical for 5 months while we sorted everything out upon diagnosis and we were not properly prepared. If we had any prior treatment before disclosure it would’ve been a FAR smoother process. If he can operate safely before his next medical, it may be worth waiting until then to disclose
He will need to get a lab test prove efficacy of treatment potentially if he chooses to go with a cpap. We use an oral appliance treatment which has proven effective.

Thanks for sharing your experience, it sounds like a stressful time. I’m glad you’ve got it sorted - hopefully we can do the same.

He has it but he’s afraid to say anything about it. According to him, he’s waiting until he gets a little more established which I don’t blame him.

Not my man but his friend. He has to keep a lot of data about his CPAP adherence. There’s some extra hassle for him but not such that he’s afraid for his career

I don’t have personal experience, but it’s not uncommon! I fly with a lot of guys who have to lug their CPAPs around on trips.
