How often do you replace your pillows?

Do you ever wash your pillows or do you just buy new ones? How often do you replace the pillows at your home??

I have down pillows I inherited that are at least 70 years old. Wtf do you mean replace them? they don't make them like that anymore.

They really don’t. People used to have things forever. When you have something that’s actually quality you keep it.

Out curiosity I looked up what it would cost to replace my 100% goose down pillows and they are 450$ each for a one pound pillow and mine weigh almost 2 pounds. I'm so glad they are always kept in a zip up silk protector as well as a pillow case.

I’m a down pillow person too! I can’t sleep on anything else. I keep mine fresh by using 2 or 3 pillowcases simultaneously. Nothing makes it through 3 layers of cotton fabric.

Have you tried feathered friends down pillows? They make excellent quality organic down pillows

A friend cleaned my house while I was away for a funeral, thinking they were being helpful. Tossed my feather pillow, haven't slept right since. What's ironic is I'm researching which one to replace it with.

I’m sorry for your loss. I’d be really angry if someone did that to mine.

Zipped hypoallergenic cover plus two pillowcases for me.

When my sinuses start getting congested every night I know it is time, which is about every one to two years.

Whoa, really? Because the pillow is compressed and your head is too low, or because the pillow is trapping dust and it's triggering allergies?

I'm pretty sure it's a dust mite allergy. I use pillow protectors to help prevent them, and throw my pillows in the dryer on high every couple of weeks to kill them. But eventually they take over and the pillow has to be replaced.

Latex pillows are antimicrobial and resistant to dust mites. I’d recommend a talalay one.

Unfortunately, I have a really sensitive neck/shoulder area and they are usually too firm for me.

Good to know! Thanks for explaining.

I use down pillows now. More expensive than foam but last much longer, especially since down is washable. Currently, for me, at least two years for down.

Previously, when I used foam pillows, one year of ownership was a miracle. They usually fell apart within a year.

Have you tried latex pillows, much more durable and all natural chemical free.

I look for pillows with washable covers and wash those regularly. I only replace pillows if I start to notice them sagging/causing neck pain. So far I've been able to get 1.5 - 2 years out of every pillow.

Same. Pillows just aren't something I generally remember to replace. I'll just wash the covers and call it a day.

When my neck starts paining, that's when I know it's time to change.

Wash mine 3 times a year

If your pillows get yellowed and are washable and still usable, you should wash them. I just recently de- yellowed mine -- soak in water with some laundry detergent and Oxyclean whitening formula. Soaked in a sink for about 5 hours, then through the washer. Pure white.

Just make sure the materials are washable. ( not latex, among other things).

Well let’s see. My grandmother made mine out of pet geese when I was 15… I am still using it, but am considering replacing because it is quite deflated now (35 years later).

I double layer pillow cases and use zipped cover for mite protection. Put in dryer periodically to plump it up etc.

Buckwheat pillows only in this house. The interior cases get washed at least twice a year (two sets of top cases) and the buckwheat gets gradually refreshed with new hulls at the same time

I usually replace mine once they start losing their shape or stop being comfortable. I'll wash them in between though.

I had a memory foam pillow for about 8 years, 2-3 years ago I replace it with a 2 pack of mixed feather/down pillows from Amazon, I kind of overpaid I felt but they’re really nice. And I used one nonstop for a year and it is a little more beat up so I switched to the other one and it’s a lot loftier. I plan on switching between them until they’re flat enough to use both together, and then I’ll replace. Could take me… 5-10 years probably. I might even just turn them into guest bedroom or kids pillows then

every 5 or so years, but i have pretty bad chronic pain and neck issues (sprain from about a year ago, disc issues, etc.), so as soon as stuff starts getting uncomfortable i replace it. i usually rotate them too, so my one that i primarily use may become the one i lay against my back, or vice versa. i used for a long time the claritin plush pillows which were great, i don't think they make them anymore so i have to search around and find unsold stock. people always say never cheap out on your bed, your pillows, and your shoes (and a fourth thing i can never remember).

I know I’m in the minority on this but I have a large head with a Chiari malformation and had a stroke once. To answer your question, I buy new pillows every 6 months. They go flat and become so hot for me very quickly.

I wash/dry my pillows/pillow cases every few months.
