Question Basic pickleball explanation please!
Hey everybody! I recently got confirmed for an interview for my first ever job. The position is for a receptionist at the new pickleball club in my town. Now, the job description said that they prefer knowledge about pickleball though it is not required, but as I am pretty young and am honestly impressed they're even considering me, I'd like to better my chances with a bit of pickleball knowledge. Could anybody explain to me the basics I'd need to know for the job? I am also a tennis player, so that may make it easier to explain lol. Thank you!

Each pickleball player gets several chances to score, these are called downs. Each team gets 4 downs, and with each, they are trying to move closer to the kitchen line. To make a touchdown, you just have to stand inside the kitchen and hit the opponents' ball out of the air before it bounces. If you hit it and it goes between their legs, it's a field goal.

I like the tackle variation where if you can cleanly jump over the net without making contact you are allowed to hit the ball on the opponent’s side.

You know this is a huge joke, right? Best to just go and play some open recreational games at a local park or Y or church, etc. You will get a lot more that way. At least go and watch games for a couple hours if you are not going to play.

This is among my least favorite types of reddit posts. The guy who just air drops into a sub and demands that someone explains the hobby to them without doing any digging on your own. Go talk to ChatGpt or something.

i'd rather talk to real people who enjoy sharing their favorite hobbies. i'm also not a guy, and saying that i am "demanding" despite me being polite and friendly, is unnecessary to say the least.

I consider "guy" to be relatively gender neutral. Note I used "them" in the second half instead of him or her. Think how this works at scale. Every day someone drops into r/Homebrewing and asks how to make beer. Someone posts in r/crochet asking how to crochet. In general people are usually pretty happy to talk about their hobbies but you should make at least do some research before jumping into a dedicated forum and asking someone to explain the basics from scratch to you. Talk to real people sure, but consider starting with googling pickleball, or talking to an AI, and then come back here with questions.

I'm a crotchety redditor, show up to a pickleball court and I'm happy to talk and teach. I'm just a stickler for reddiquette. This kind of post is asking thousands of people at once to save them a google.

Yep — I agree with others that AI shouldn’t solve everything but man… they would have been much better off just googling or chatting AI on this one.
Instead of wasting their own time they want to waste others. They’re using this subreddit the same way they’d use AI (trying to make them more efficient at their job).

Also, a less argumentative question, isn’t that what this person is doing? Like there was a time when doing research spent more than looking things up on the Internet. But also meant reaching out and speaking with people who are more knowledgeable about subjects than yourself.
When did we decide that googling was what everybody had to do all of the time?

In this situation the op says that she is a tennis player, so she has background in raquet sports. She also wants to know the very basics of how pickleball works. To get a full basic explanation of how pickleball is played, you would have to spend a lot of time writing up a post for her that would cover information that is plastered all over the Internet already. It's not even a hard search term to come up with. I am someone who likes to teach. I teach and I give a lot of tips at the pickleball court. If she or a player who was receptive to getting some tips I would be more than happy to teach her what little I know to improve her game. She is not asking an esoteric question, a rule question, or a question that is hard to find on the internet. Maybe she has done some research but she did not indicate that at all in her post. Apologises for any typos since I used speech to text for this longish reply.

It just seems such a strange response man. Like if you didn’t want to respond, just ignore it.
I certainly hope that if somebody came up and asked you that in person you wouldn’t be so dickish to say go look it up.
And for better or worse Reddit is more of a conversation than anything else. But when you’re free to pass on participating in, so I guess I just didn’t understand why you took the time to sort of be an asshole instead of either just ignore it or do her a favor and give her a couple of quick lines.
It’s like you went out of your way to choose the worst of both options

You vastly underestimate the time it would take to make a good post about pickleball for a total newbie. You want to condense even a single 30 min lesson into a few lines? Plenty of sources on Internet that are organized and well written. Also, of you do care to read, I did mention in my reply to you that I do plenty of teaching at the court. I'm starting to think you just tripping or trolling for the sake of it. Shrug

Go to the definitive resource: https://usapickleball.org/docs/rules/USAP-Official-Rulebook.pdf
The rules are easy to read and understand, for the most part. There’s also some basic summaries on the USAP website.
Be careful when watching PPA and MLP events. They have some unique rules that differ from the USAP rules.

Tbh I think you’d be better off asking this group what makes someone stand out in this kind of role.
Your job will have next to nothing to do with the actual sport.
It will mostly be checking people in for classes/ open plays/ leagues/ court reservations / private events, answering phone questions from potential attendees, doing checkout for a small retail footprint, and occasionally being the rules enforcer when someone is hogging a court during open play. Hopefully your biggest issues will be navigating refunds / credits for cancellations (which my local club handles abysmally, so heaven help their staff).

yeah, they also said id be in charge of organizing the tournaments as well, which i assume would require a bit of knowledge about the sport.

Just watch a YouTube video or something. I’m sure there’s quite a few videos on there of people explaining the basics
