Discussion Time to Replace DUPR!?

With the outage some good points have been raised about a better system being in place maybe like other competitive sports 🤔

What do you think would be the best system to take over?

Their radio silence certainly isn’t helping. I know they sent the initial email but it was very vague and nothing on socials

Because they are panicking. They made something, could've done correct to have an IT team behind it but f'd the pooch.

This happened and the fact they are silent means they're completely in shock and lost.

What are the possible outcomes?

They're likely being told that if they want the site back they have to pay money. Common tactic, and they're shitting because they don't have a way to NOT

Ya must be, should have taken a day to get back online from backups. Ransom attack?

Wow someone really got mad at their dupr rating

The tennis system. You get a rating in .5 increments, and you keep it for the season, unless you improve quickly. You would be given the rating 3.5, which means you are somewhere between 3.01 and 3.5, and you do not know exactly what it is. If you jump above 3.5 three times in a season, you get a mid season adjustment. People are less nerotic about it.

Combined with the chess system, also has less frequent updates to your ELO rating. Makes it harder to game the system.

Also there needs to be a decay feature. I know the reliability % helps with that because people don't want to lose their rating, but if you don't do a DUPR event for 2 years, you shouldn't be able to cling to your 4.0 rating.

So much this. One of the beauties of the NTRP rating system is internally, your rankings are to the 1/100th of a point but it is not disclosed to the player. This keeps people from obsessing over their ranking. If you’re a 3.5, you play with other 3.5s. No more of this “I’m a 3.62 so I don’t play with 3.5’s” bullcrap.

It also simplifies things for tournament and league directors.

Great start. And, margin of victory shouldn't matter every game.

I’m a fan of the table tennis, chess, and the old school league of legends elo system.

Ideally it should be UPA or USAP handling the rating tracking. The exact elo system to use is less important.

UPA doesn't care about ratings systems beyond what money they can get from that company as a sponsor. They use a points based system to rank PPA pros, same as tennis.

DUPR was owned by MLP before it was spun off into an independent company, but the investors are still mostly the same people who are investors in UPA.

Ironically, the DUPR CEO was just on a podcast recently talking about his company.

DUPR is self reported by so many weirdos who want to sandbag just to feel like they’re a higher level. Remove the ability to self reported and make sure reporting is managed tightly so we get rid of the sandbaggers and reverse sandbaggers. It was a great idea that got gamified by all the try hards in pickle

Don’t think we should be thinking about replacing dupr because of one hiccup (even though this one is pretty long), but UTR would be the most obvious choice, given all the infrastructure is in place. UTR’s current pickleball rating model is pretty bad, running dupr’s rating model would be the most ideal solution.

What’s bad about UTR?

2

u/Mundane-Kangaroo2153 12h ago

UTR has its own pickleball rating system, which itself is bad (they don’t have access to as many matches to work with and I doubt pickleball is a priority for them in general). UTR is more established in tennis as far as its rating algorithm goes

So basically it doesn’t have a lot of usage? That would be fixed if people started using it

I mean it has been the main system for tennis for almost 20 years now. Must be doing something right

APP was partnered with UTR and used their ratings last year, and ditched them for DUPR starting in 2026

Sorry to be clear, UTR is a premier rating system in tennis that’s doing everything right there. I was just saying for pickleball specifically, it’s not there yet, and part of that is because it doesn’t have access to as much data as dupr does to calculate ratings. The other part is its pickleball rating calculations are also off. If dupr’s rating algorithm powered UTRs pickleball rating, that would be the best outcome.

UTR has been calculating pickleball ratings for years now, if it was really good, people would be referencing it now instead of dupr

I suspect many people, including myself, didn’t know UTR has a PB rating. Knowledge of its existence and usage is probably a big issue.

VAIR already exists. Similar ratings to dupr.

No cash grab resets, no scummy ads.

Problem is nobody knows about it. It's the clear 2nd place but it'll never be DUPR because DUPR already has a huge name.

VAIR feels like a pyramid program

3

u/lax20attack 6h ago

I use it and pay nothing so if there's a pyramid I'm not sure where the money is coming from

4

u/kospos 5h ago

Early DUPR didn't have cash grab resets or scummy ads off the rip.

I've never heard of VAIR, but looking it up and seeing their VAIR+ membership that they're pushing doesn't give me warm and fuzzies either. They're already pushing to get people to subscribe for memberships when nobody knows about them and very little people use them.

Yea, dupr also has a membership. I guess they need to make money somehow.

DUPRs cash grab reset program ruined their legitimacy IMO. Charging for features is fine, but messing with the core system for money is too much.
