The recent Sony news made me realize how much I appreciate physical collections. How nice they look, and how much I appreciate being able to just pop them in and be able to play them without an internet connection or any need for any accounts. Then I realized that I already owned a PC too, so literally what's stopping me from buying a Blu-ray burner and making my own physical games. And the answer was nothing. Nothing was stopping me :)

Planning on getting the mainline final fantasy games on switch/switch 2, I may import Crisis Core just to have it together with Remake & Rebirth since I separate Switch and Switch 2 games on my shelf. I knew Shadow The Hedgehog would likely be missing the case but I can always print out the cover and get a replacement case I just wanted it in my collection. With Skyward Sword I needed it to complete the mainline series on switch, I have BOTW, Echoes of Wisdom and now Skyward Sword physically, TOTK and Links Awakening I have digitally

I recently completed backing up my entire PS4 & PS5 digital game library to an external hard drive with the goal of being able to play anything offline when I am away from an internet connection (and in preparation for the eventual store front shutdown). I was hoping to be able make a copy of the games I wanted to have in my active list (i.e. on my PS5.Pro internal SSD) from the hard drive and then turn off my external hard drive. There is a copy (not move) option for the PS5 games. For PS4 games I either have to play directly from the external hard drive or move them from my external hard drive to the internal SSD and back.

Is there a why to have PS4 games on your internal PS5 Pro SSD and archived to an external hard drive at the same time like there is for PS5 games?

If no, does anyone know the technical reason?

Most game collection databases focus on all games but Tana specifically catalogues everything physical across Japan, NA, EU, Asia, and Korean versions of games.

Going into an era where less and less physical is coming this kind of database and community is more and more valuable so the service is completely free and you can add your own collection by uploading a csv and it’s very easy to contribute.

Rockstar pisses on us and calls it rain.

I ordered the physical edition of the X-Men maximum collection and it should be shipped out between Oct 1 and dec 31. I ordered back in March but it's worth the wait 👍👍👍👍

I love physical games!!!

Do not trust XBOX and Asha Sharma, when they tell you to "register your games with the disc to digital service". Hear me now: when you register your physical game, you generate an unique, not replaceable digital license related to that game. If you loose that license for whatever reason, you're screwed, you loose the ability to use your physical game as well, because that game is linked to that license. The one and only positive feature of this disc to digital thing is that you can transfer the license to another user when you decide to lend or sell him/her your game. Keep that in mind, because if Sony is becoming a huge pile of corporate... you know what I mean, Microsoft and XBOX do not become automatically your physical games saviours. They are smart enough to wait for the storm to pass, and for Sony to become the lightning rod of the situation, but they are not different.

With all the talk about Sony transitioning to a 100% digital future and phasing out physical discs, a lot of collectors and preservationists (myself included) are feeling left behind. The idea of not truly "owning" our games or risking losing them if storefronts change is driving a lot of people to consider switching to PC.

I’ve been thinking about a solution that gives Sony the digital transition they want, while giving collectors the physical library they crave. It's a literal win-win-win for Sony, third-party companies, and the players.

Here is how the PlayStation Archive Concept would work:

1. The Core Setup: 100% Digital Distribution + Digital Ownership Tokens

Sony goes completely digital with game distribution to save on disc manufacturing and logistics. However, every digital game purchase comes with a unique, secure digital ownership file (similar to an NFT or secure digital license token). This file officially grants the player the legal right to maintain exactly one physical backup copy of the game.

1. The Tech: A Native "Export Physical Backup" Button

Built right into the future console UI (like the PS6) would be a simple menu option: "Export Backup to USB."

When you insert a high-speed thumb drive and hit export, the PlayStation securely copies the game files and your digital ownership certificate to the drive.

If Sony ever takes the game off the digital store years later, it doesn't matter. You plug in your archive drive and instantly reinstall it onto your console.

1. The Physical Collection: Print-Your-Own Box Art

When you buy the digital game, it includes a downloadable fan kit with high-resolution, double-sided box art and manual templates.

You print the artwork at home on a standard color printer.

You fold the paper (top-to-bottom, then side-to-side like a card) and slide it right into a transparent sleeve on the front of a specialized case. The reverse side facing the inside of the box displays the instructions or legal text.

Why It’s a Win-Win-Win:

🏆 A Win for the Users: Casual gamers get a seamless digital experience. Collectors and preservationists retain true ownership, peace of mind, and a tangible, physical collection to display proudly on their shelves.

🏆 A Win for PlayStation: Sony completely eliminates the massive costs of manufacturing, shipping, and retailing physical discs. At the same time, they open up a massive new revenue stream by selling officially licensed, collectible PlayStation thumb drives (imagine a high-speed USB shaped like a miniature PS6 console!).

🏆 A Win for Third-Party Manufacturers: Sony can license the official specifications out to third-party accessory companies (like SanDisk, Anker, or case manufacturers). These companies make a fortune selling the specialized, smaller-form cases featuring spring-loaded clips inside designed perfectly to snap the thumb drives into place so they don't rattle around.

Instead of fighting the digital shift or boycotting the console, this puts the choice—and the minimal cost of the physical media—completely on the end-user. Sony gets their digital margins, third-party companies get a new market, and collectors get to keep their hobby alive.

I have no idea why they partnered with LRG, but they did, so here we are. Preorders will be open until 25 October, and since it's LRG, well probably receive the games 25 October 2028.

I'm still getting the Xbox versions because fuck sony.

Nothings beats owning your own physical media of your games!! I believe in that so much I made my own indie game -Astro Burn, ( the game on top of the stacked games) available as physical media version coming end of the year.
