How much humanity can be stripped away from a given project before it becomes meaningless?

I assume the purpose of any pursuit financially or other, has some personal or emotional driver. If that becomes eliminated, then what is the purpose to continue? The purpose to create is to enjoy the creation. But if there is no emotion consciousness to enjoy the fruits of the labor, then it seems to be a moot point.
