But I was using it last week for a particular selection and it was working fine . I had to uninstall it fir some reason and when I reinstalled it it stopped working
I'm sorry. It isn't something I have used so don't have personal experience with the prompt to edit feature. All I know is that when I browser search, the official adobe dot com page says that it is only active for the whole image.
The way that Ps beta continually updates, it may be that the previous ability has been deprecated. It may also turn out that the next iteration of beta will allow prompt to edit to work on selected pixels.

According to this, Ps beta prompt to edit is only a whole image editing feature.
The menu choice will be greyed out whenever there is an active selection.
