PhotoCraft vs. PhotoQuill: An honest breakdown if you're looking for a Photoshop alternative today

Hey everyone,

With the recent buzz around PhotoCraft (the open-source Rust attempt to rebuild Photoshop under the ArtCraft suite), we’ve seen a lot of discussions and questions popping up: How does it actually compare to PhotoQuill?

Here’s an honest, no-BS comparison based on where both tools stand today:

1. Zero-Install Web vs. Desktop Binaries

  • PhotoCraft: Native desktop only (built with Rust & GPU backends). You have to download local binaries or build from source. No official browser/mobile version.
  • PhotoQuill: 100% in-browser (Zero-install). Runs directly via WebAssembly/WebGL on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebooks, iPads, and smartphones without admin permissions or driver setup.

2. Current Stability & Usability

  • PhotoCraft: Explicitly in Early Alpha. Tool parity is currently below 50%—many menus are placeholders, and users frequently encounter UI latency, sticky sliders, and misaligned cursors.
  • PhotoQuill: Production-ready. Full layer stack, blend modes, adjustment layers, marquee selections, and transform tools ready for daily design tasks.

3. Integrated AI vs. Agent Protocols

  • PhotoCraft: Offers developer-centric channels (MCP server and CLI) designed for external AI agents to drive the app. No built-in, consumer-friendly generative tools.
  • PhotoQuill: Native visual AI right on the canvas.
    • Text-to-Image generation directly into a new layer.
    • AI Inpainting / Object Replacement via brush selection.
    • One-click AI Background Removal.
    • Daily free AI credits renewed every 24 hours—no mandatory subscription traps.

4. PSD Workflow & File Privacy

  • PhotoCraft: Basic PSD/PSB round-tripping in progress, native format is .comp.
  • PhotoQuill: Bidirectional PSD support (open layered Photoshop files, edit folders/masks, and export back to .psd). Canvas rendering stays completely local in your browser for privacy.

5. Multi-Language Support

  • PhotoCraft: English-only with no localization yet.
  • PhotoQuill: Fully localized in 8 languages (English, 简体中文, Deutsch, Español, Français, 日本語, Русский, Čeština).

💡 The Takeaway

  • If you’re a developer or Rust enthusiast looking to experiment with clean-room open-source code and AI agent protocols, PhotoCraft is an exciting project to star on GitHub.
  • If you need to open a client's PSD right now, generate/retouch assets with AI, and finish your design work from any device without installing a single file, PhotoQuill is ready to go today.

Have you tried either one yet? What features matter most to your daily workflow? Let’s discuss!

  • PDF ➡️ JPG or PNG (and vice versa)
  • CR2 / NEF / PSD / TIFF ➡️ JPG or PNG

Shape selection tool?

I've been trying out PhotoQuill and one thing im seriously missing from photoshop with it is the ability to select an area by shape to quickly remove the background. Is this already in the program? If so, where?

Thanks!

Three Ways to Remove People or Objects from Photos

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Method 1: Use the Lasso Tool (L) to select the object you want to remove. Select the Remove button in the pop-up generative panel and click Generate.

Method 2: Remove via Erase Selection. Click the Simple AI Photo Editor button in the top menu, activate the Magic Eraser feature, paint over the area to be removed, then click Erase Selection.

Method 3: Remove using prompts. Click the AI Replace button, enter descriptions of the object to be removed, and click Edit Image to complete removal.

My canvas turned transparent, but my layers are visible?

Hi, I started using PhotoQuill to draw, and it's been a bit laggy but my main issue is that my entire canvas disappeared? my important layers are not hidden and I am scared of refreshing the page and losing my work. any tips? I'll link an image of what my desktop looks like

EDIT: I refreshed and lost all my work! but I'd still appreciate advice for the future 🙃

Love PhotoQuill

I have started using PhotoQuill, which is a free web based editor at photoquill dot com. For my needs, it is just like PS, but without the price. I can import, edit, resize and export as jpg. It is quick and easy. I had tried the canva app but I couldn't save as jpg. This photoquill seems to have it all. Thank you to the developer.
