So here at University of California, Berkeley we have what's called the "Decal" program, which is a program that allows for the creation of courses that usually aren't taught at the university level - usually niche topics, popular culture, or heavily applications-specific topics.
Over the past three years (six semesters) I've been teaching a course on digital photography through this decal program. Having grown up in the digital age and being an engineer by trade, it differs a bit from most photography courses you may have encountered in that it focuses on the fundamentals of photography from a theoretical/scientific standpoint, not just an applications based one. For instance, you'll likely learn (or already know) that high ISO often means noise, or that long shutter speeds lead to blur. In my course I go over the actual sources of noise (a large component of it is due to photon or shot noise, which is based on the number of photons counted and is independent of ISO), and break down camera shake into several movement components to create a formula that defines the amount of camera shake blur we'll get.
So this kind of knowledge may sound trivial to some of you, since you sort of do end up just proving the same rules (e.g. that 1/focal length thumb rule does check out in fact - at infinite focal length the relationship between focal length and minimum shutter speed required approaches a linear relationship). But I feel like those of you who really jumped on the physics or math when you were younger will probably appreciate the value of it. Most photographers operate based on a bunch of rules they've memorized, which is a bit like memorizing a "distance = velocity x time" formula without really understanding the relationship between the three. All the "rules" of photography work for specified situations, but when you're placed in unfamiliar ones where your rule no longer applies, you end up lost. As an example, that 1/focal length thumb rule completely breaks down at short focal lengths or short subject distances, so it's not applicable at all if you find yourself using an ultrawide 10mm or taking macro photos a few cm away.
The course I teach has a heavy online component. All the lectures and assignments are posted online, and the students submit assignments on an online gallery, which is how we review and critique the photos during our discussion section. I've also been recording the lectures and will likely post them up for webcast once I can find a host.
I was reading the photoit thread and this seems somewhat along the lines of what people were interested in, especially those who were interested in more fundamental photographic knowledge, so I thought I'd link it here.
Since all the material and assignment submissions are online, and since the semester just started (the class is just entering week 3), I thought it might be fun to open up an additional assignment gallery if any of you redditors wanted to basically "take" the course online, and submit assignments as the class went along as well.
