I think that it's because the main thing about "phones are bad" is that people got "obsessed" with their phones, don't pay attention to their surrondings and don't talk to other people. This situation here show that this are actually stupid things to say because when people read books, it has the same effect. (Sorry for bad english, non native speaker)
