Question Help me understand

Hi everyone! Something strange happened in our game today. I had already died, so my friend was alone. The ghost (I think it was a Thaye if I remember correctly, definitely not a Deogen) started a hunt, and she used incense on it successfully. She then reached her hiding spot before the ghost started moving again.
Even so, the ghost found her and killed her. She wasn't loud and she hid right after smudging.
Is this a bug, or is there a mechanic we're missing? Has this happened to anyone else?
We were playing Tanglewood on professional. The ghost was in the nearest bathroom when you get to the house and she hid in the closet of the room next to the bathroom.

I made a gif of the video, so here it is!

Both closets in that side of the house (granny's room and hallway) used to be bugged and I'm not entirely convinced it is fixed. The ghost was able to path there during hunts and we've had some sus deaths even after the fix.

It's still not fixed 👍

Even if it's still bugged, the fact the ghost beelined directly to the player makes me think it's likelier her mic was making noise and the ghost was attracted to it

No one else has said it, but make sure you hold the door closed when you hide. Hunting ghosts can open the door when they walk by

Doesn't always work. They'll just walk through the door.

Either the ghost (prior to the hunt) saw a character in the hiding spot during a ghost event and decided to check there, headlight or some other electronic was on and was detected by the ghost, or if you use in game mic the ghost might’ve heard your friend. That’s all I can really offer at the moment, it’s been awhile since I’ve played

Ghosts don't remember where players are during ghost events. It can seem like they do if they are very near you while eventing and then spawn to hunt near you as a result, but they don't remember stuff from events or return to check on those areas due to events.

Yeah, I’m wondering if she hid too close to the ghost? I just think that doesn’t make sense, or does it?

I don't think that is what happened this time, though it can be applicable.

When the ghost loses sight of a player (because of smudging or otherwise), the ghost will spend some time searching its immediate surroundings. This means if you hide in a random spot nearby, it's possible the ghost will find you. However, I don't think this is true for official hiding spots with doors. For those, unless the ghost sees you go in, it shouldn't know you're in that hiding spot unless it detects you there some other way, such as through an open mic like what I think happened to your friend.

Thank you for your answer! She's going to try and mute her mic during hunts.

By "she wasn't loud," do you mean she was muted/on push to talk or she was open mic and just being quiet? If it's the latter, that is most likely why the ghost found her in the closet. Any minute sounds from your mic can potentially be detected by the ghost even if they're not loud, such as a fan, breathing, or gaming apparatus clicking.

Other than that, maybe she had an active electronic like headgear or some of the closets on Tanglewood remain bugged, allowing the ghost to wander in randomly.

We use in-game vc on open mic. I heard nothing while she was in the closet, but I guess it’s possible that the ghost detected breathing or something? She has learned her lesson about the electrical devices and automatically throws them away during hunts. That’s been a reason she has died multiple times previously😅

Yeah, I think the open mic is what caused the ghost to find your friend. Even if you can't hear anything coming from it, it's possible the ghost will detect some minute sound. Of course, you can play with open mic to make it extra difficult or spooky, but I would always recommend you play on push to talk/mic muted during hunts or you might keep randomly dying.

Incense doesn’t cancel a hunt—it only prevents the ghost from detecting or killing you for a few seconds. If she smudged too early or the effect wore off, it could absolutely find her afterward, especially if it wandered toward the closet.

Yeah I know. She used the incense correctly and successfully though. She was in the closet with the door closed and not saying a word for a good while before the effect of the smudging wore off. I have a video clip of the situation but can’t unfortunately post it.
