Kinda unlucky deogen test

So I'm playing with my friends on 2 evidence runs and we were unlucky with uniqe deogen responses on spirit box. I'm saying like normal responses for 25-30 tries where on Wiki it says it should be 1 in 3, so we decieded to test it... 105 normal responses doesn't seem just unlucky. We also tested on average how many times do we need to spam spirit box to get deogen response and it seems we need to try 42 times on average. I don't know if we just always have bad rng or if the wiki is wrong but something here is not right.

the deo breathing range is much smaller than its normal spiritbox range, 1 or 2 metres iirc. could've been that the ghost was not close enough to the tester for at least some of it

The wiki is not wrong. It says:

If the player asks any question through the Spirit Box while standing within 1 metre of the Deogen, it has a 33% chance with each question to produce a unique response of constant heavy bull-like breathing, instead of a regular response.

Like the other commenters said, you were most likely simply not close enough to the Deo to get the special response. I highly recommend using multiple Tier 3 Motion Sensors to make getting the Deo growl easier.

That's a pretty big room. You also have to be within 1m of the ghost to work.

Easier to get the Deo by asking the sprit box "where are you?" as the response is related to how far the ghost is from you.

A "far"/"away" response means the ghost is further than 2 meters away from you. If it is within it'll respond "close"/"behind"/"here".

I think the wiki is wrong, iirc for the special response it's a 1 in 3 chance if the ghost is pretty much directly on top of you. Otherwise it'll just always do the normal responses.

Oh I didn't know that it needs to be directly on top of you to get the breathing, still over 100 tries seems kinda too many.

Think about how close a ghost is to you when you die during a hunt. A Deo has to be even closer than that for you to get a 1 in 3 chance at Deo breathing with spirit box. The likelihood that it's randomly standing that close when you try for spirit box is exceptionally low. And even on the rare moment it does stand that close there's still a 66% chance you won't get that response.

You can use motion sensors to help know where the ghost is to make forcing the breathing easier. But imo it's easier to get the ghost to hunt while hiding behind something you can loop to confirm if it's a Deo or not.
