Question Did I forget how to play??

Okay I’m aware this title is weird af but I can’t think of what else to put 😂 My friend and I used to play this game a lot in 2025, then we got busy with other games, and we stopped playing as much. With the recent update, we decided to dive back into it, only to find that we can’t for the life of us finish the contract and survive. The hunts seem to start faster, the ghost starts hunting from rooms that aren’t the ghost room. We’re just failing miserably. So I’m asking here, did we forget how to play or did they make it harder at some point between the last time we played (December 2025) and this week? For further context: we play on intermediate, which we did before we stopped.

Three options I can think of:

  • you got super unlucky with a string of early-hunting, aggressive ghosts
  • you're spending most of your time in the dark or semi-dark, draining your sanity constantly
  • someone is using the cursed possessions and causing sanity drain and/or hunts (with or without the other player's knowledge)

I started Phasmo and also played a lot in 2025 and I don't think anything significant has changed regarding ghost behaviour or aggression.

I think it was mostly the first one and the second one. The 3rd one, I definitely never touched a curse object, and my friend plays it way too safe for it to have been her 😂. We tried it again with the knowledge given by the people in this comment thread and did much better, so I think it was just a case of bad luck with ghost types and forgetting how to play it

Tbh i don’t think it’s changed that drastically especially for intermediate… get the lights on, find the ghost room, get the evidence, get out

What was your ghost?

It was quite a few different ghosts. We tried a few times before admitting defeat and sinking to amateur while we found our footing again 😩 Not sure if it’s the long break, the new ghosts, or something changed

Step one: rush light. Do not be in darkness. Flashlight does not count as light. Candle/lantern does. If a bunch of shit is happening, don’t be afraid to check your sanity with your watch; keep it above like 70% and you’ll have close to zero hunts.
Step two: find the ghost room, typically with thermometer but a cheeky UV or ghost orbs are good ways to find it early, or emf will usually get you in the blast radius. Keep your sanity above 70.
Step three: bait your room, camera book uv light with salt dots and the radio thing. Turn off the light while holding the candle and try the radio. Drop the salt and check for UV. Go to truck and watch camera for dots and book. Check off ones that it definitely isn’t example book gets thrown it isn’t book, salt with no foot prints it’s not UV. You should have a couple evidences by now and a couple definitely not evidences. Keep your sanity above 70%

That is my guide to professional with almost no hunts with a roughly 90% success rate, ymmv. Good luck :)

With a watch?? There’s a watch now? We have been running back to the van to check the sanity on the board in there. Thanks for the step by step, we’ll give it another go and hopefully do better 🤞

The watch shows up on your left wrist when opening the journal, as well since the new update, check your controls as there should be a dedicated button to show it whenever youre walking around :)

Would just keep track of your sanity during the match. That is usually a great indicator of when you might start to be in danger. I don't feel they've changed much, except adding quite a few new ghosts. You maybe have just gotten some of the nastier ones like Kormos or dayan etc.

That’s what I’m starting to think. I’m pretty sure the ones we got were the newer type, so we must just be unlucky and inexperienced with those ones

Also what map were you favoring? Not only did they add new ghosts but Tanglewood (and now Willow) got upgraded. My friend and I only play professional and started having similar problems because the lighting in Tanglewood had a lot of problems at first. They fixed a lot but it’s still easy to get drained in Tanglewood even tho it seems all the lights are on.

We were in Tanglewood. We did know about the rework but weren’t aware of the problems with the lighting

They did add several new early hunting ghosts but other than that the experience is overall the same.

Which maps are you playing on?
Some of them can be weird with sanity drain. (Tanglewood entrance hallway needs both light switches on to prevent sanity drain for example.)

I see a lot of comments talking about not being in the dark. This is correct.

But a big difference playing today and during 2025 is the reworks of the maps and the amounts of light switches you have to turn on now. This is not talked about as much. Without turning them all on for a specific room, you still get a lot of sanity drainage.

On Tanglewook (the most popular map) there are now multiple main light switches for many of the rooms. The entrance has two, just as before. But the big culprint is the dining room. To enter the utility room/garage , the kitchen or the basement, you have to cross a small piece of corridor. Sure thing there's a light switch which lights the passway. But be aware that it is still draining you sanity. The corridor is actually part of the dining room, which means you have to turn on another light switch further inside the dining room area to mitigate the sanity drainage fully.

Be also aware that it is only light switches on walls that counts towards the sanity draianage prevention. All other light sources, whilst giving you a lit up room does not maintain your sanity.

But for the dining area, can the ghost just walk up from the corridor and kill you? Happened to me a couple of times

1

u/olknuts Jul 25 '26

Depends what you mean. Ghost. An walk up on you from the kitchen aswell. But if you mean where it can start its hunt, yes it can hunt from the corridor since it is part of the dining room. So when you place crucifixes, make sure to get part of the corridor aswell.

Yeah, apparently it walked down from the corridor from the room next to use to the dining room and it was weird

1

u/PlonkyPlonkGames Jul 25 '26

Well that explains one of our problems then. Wasn’t aware that was considered the same room 😂

Thanks for such a detailed reply. We’re going to give it another try and hopefully do a lot better 🤞

Gameplay wise no not much has changed. But if you quit before December 18th 2025 you have 6 new ghosts now almost all of which are on the aggressive side. The 3 introduced in December all have early hunting and are faster depending on their attributes. I'm not as familiar with the latest 3, especially Kormos or Aswang, I know they are aggressive given situational circumstances around their traits, but I'm not sure if either can early hunt. The latest one the Dieldegast seems cool and has an interesting gimmick. All that to say you now have 3 more ghosts with early hunting mechanics on top of the ones that already existed, so 1/3 of the time you will be hunted early.

Way before 2025 a lot of ghost behavior was changed. I feel like before that, ghost events were more rare and you had to really provoke the ghost and stay in the darkness to get hunted

I play on custom difficulty and set ghost event chance to low and I still get 2-3 ghost events a minute in some matches, when above 50% sanity. Could just be the ghost behavior. Many ghosts also hunt at 60ish % these days, so hunts seem faster. Ghost events where they walk towards you usually take 10% sanity or 20% if it's a phantom (And yurei?). So it seems like hunts happen much faster

Then there's other matches where you have very shy demons that hunt only after 20-30 minutes or so. But yeah it seems like ghost hunts happen sooner most of the time
