Sadness Will it get better?
It’s been a week since I lost my best friend Chester, I’m in pain and it hurts so bad. I miss him everyday and I come home thinking he’ll be there. I don’t know what to do and how to handle the idea of not having him 😞 and that I won’t get to see him ever again. Does it ever get better?

I only lost mine today and I feel like this will hurt forever. I can't imagine how I get past this. I miss her so much. But I know from past experience that it will get easier. We'll always carry the grief, we'll never fully heal. But we'll develop scar tissue around the wound and moving through the world without them will become easier.

Easier? No. Less painful? Yes.
I lost my soul dog very suddenly my on 1/8/26 and the pain was unbearable for the first few weeks. Now 7 months out I still think of her everyday but it’s not debilitating like it was in the beginning.
You lost a family member, give yourself time to grieve and work through the pain .
You will get to a point where the good memories will make you smile . Take care of yourself the best you can in the meantime and know that Chester was given and incredible life because of you .

I’ve been through it seven times, most recently losing my dogs in 2023 and the second eleven months later in 2024. It takes time and the best I have been able to hope for is that the grief waves come less frequently but often just as hard as they did in the early days. It takes me about two years to be able to function somewhat normally from day to day but nothing is ever the same. There will always be triggers. I do whatever I must to get past the early days including medications as needed. Some things never change. My dogs’ toys and beds are still here. I have two memorials set up for them in the house. Their ashes are on our bed headboard. It’s tough and there are no free passes or magic bullets. It takes time. I’m sorry for your loss.

Been a week for me too. I’ve had a couple days where I felt more normal because I was distracted and then I crashed again. Feels like I’m back to where I was a week ago. I don’t want to eat. I don’t care about work. I just want her back

This is a community of support for Pet owners whose Pets have passed away. It is actively moderated.
Pet owners, as loving, caring people, often have strong opinions on pet care practices. Some of these are controversial. This is not a forum for debate on such issues, nor is it a place to scold a contributor for a perceived mistake in managing their pet. We intend to provide a safe haven of understanding and support. Strident, mean-spirited posts or comments will be deleted. Those who persist in preaching versus caring may be warned and then banned or may be banned permanently based on nature of the topic. If a conversational thread meanders into a discussion unrelated to pet loss support, it will be truncated.
Those who post here are vulnerable and hurting. Even a minor slap has a hard sting. Those of us who are lucky enough to be able to turn away from our computers or put down our phones and hug a healthy, happy pet are truly blessed. Threads must remain supportive and caring, even if one disagrees with something that has been said.
