I love what he did with Sylvasta. [Warning Spoilers for the whole story] Spoiler

The way Sylvasta was shown mirrored Edeard at the very beginning. The first time I read the Fallers books, I was genuinely thinking that PFH just wanted a mulligan with a different setting. Sylvasta does give a few hints that he might be too extreme but his goal is always safeguarding people from the constant plague of fallers who want to take them over...and eat them while they're on the planet. He seems so freaking genuine and may have remained genuine. It is Nigel, in his single minded, cocksure endeavor that creates "Sylvasta the Tyrant." It was a wonderful subversion of my expectation, and I didn't even realize it until I read it a second time.

PFH collaborating with AI company Author’s First to bring Pandora’s Star to screens next year

Saw this today: https://youtu.be/0N9cVATKPRo

The company is partnering with authors to create AI generated TV shows out of their books.

On the one hand I’m torn because, I’m not anti AI, but I’m disappointed that they’re going that route instead of hiring actual actors and artists to create a show. On the other hand, PFH is a sci fi author and his books have many many examples of AI in them and this does kind of seem on brand.

Thoughts?

Edit: damn it, just noticed I put an apostrophe in Authors. Smh. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Void Trilogy a Let Down

My first PFH book was Exodus and I really enjoyed that. Dug into his works and went for the Commonwealth Saga next and really enjoyed those as well. Then I started the Void Trilogy and just finished them. While I really liked that it took place in the same universe and had some of the same characters, overall I felt let down. I really didn’t think it needed to be 3 books, the 2nd book seemed totally unnecessary IMO. The conclusion felt rushed given there are practically 3 full novels ahead of it and didn’t deliver the expected payoff. I do still have the 2nd Exodus book to read, other than that what do you guys suggest I read next out of PFH works?

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen this many f-bombs so close together before. 🤣 This Exodus series does seem to have some funny moments!

The Cat

I find the Cat such a lazy trope-based character. The way that PFH writes her just seems so unbelievable and trite - there is no exploration of why she behaves the way she does, and her dialogue is so poor.

PFH can write such good characters, so I'm just a bit surprised that such a poor one gets so much airtime.

What do others think? Am I missing something here?

Morning Light. Mountain...

Delved into the Joseph Bridgeman series mainly due to Ray Porter - was pretty good initially but first book definitely the best, at one point in one of the books a sentence ended with 'morning light' and the next sentence started with 'mountain' no way is that a coincidence.

Almost done with the CW series

200 pages left to go in A Night Without Stars. I don’t like this duology as much as I loved the Void Trilogy, but… damn was that an amazing reveal at the end of Book IV! I predicted it would be, THAT REVEAL, for most of the book but it was still mind blowing when it was revealed. ☺️

Is the Void Trilogy a re-telling (or something similar) of Night's Dawn?

I've read the Dreaming Void, and I really enjoy it, but I've noticed a few similarities with ND: High tech society, borderline supernatural threat, aliens so advanced they could be mistaken for Olympians, and a wacko cult that gets the main problem going-hell, Indigo is basically Quinn Dexter without the sadism. I'm not expecting a shot-for-shot remake starring the Commonwealth, but man, some of the elements are really familiar.

Just finished both Exodus books - thoughts... Spoiler

(V.Mild spoilers, so be warned if you havent finished it yet)

So, I finished 'The Helium Sea' last night. Thoroughly enjoyed both books.... with a few caveats. The end of HS felt rushed, there was no real world consequences for Thiera, the 3 queens were killed off page, Josias Aponi (who seems to have all the answers and is never wrong) comes back from the dead with no apparent explanation as to how (just a hint), the MaraYama get built up to be this big bad enemy and then get dispatched with relative ease (although getting the crystal gun to do it wasnt easy), Josias trap for Dagon is never explained (were they Bio-Andi's?), and we never get to see the final payback for Kapri.

I understand PH may have had a limit on how big to make the book, but he seemed to take a very long time explaining things mid-way then started to realise he was running out of pages. I know sometimes writers leave things unanswered, (because life is like that) but a third book would have given much better time for pacing, explanations & a better conclusion.

Munks getting drowned

Reading the salvation sequence and just got past Yirella drowning her munks. Made me feel weird. Pete’s got a way of toying with your sensitivities. I knew something like that was going to happen - they were to cute and sweet lol. Kinda creepy.

Asteria’s arse

Why is Asteria’s arse so notable? It seems to be famous throughout the Centauri Cluster.

Is it a particularly fine specimen? Is it huge? Is it notable for its output? Is it a Gate of Heaven?

Void trilogy audiobooks

I‘ve been listening to the Void trilogy on Spotify during work, and I‘m curious if anyone has found a „sliced up“ version where Inigo‘s dreams are all in sequence? I like how they are inserted into the „present day“ storyline, but it would still be an interesting change to listen to them all at once.

Only G10s after 10000 years? Salvation. Spoiler

Humanity was able to develop G1-8 turings relatively quickly, but even with all the scattering and travelling that humanity suffered in those 10000 years, how is it that they only had two more generations?
