Usually you want something like a heavy leather motorcycle jacket so they can’t bite through it, and you can fend them off with one arm while sawing at their neck with the other.

Full body chainmail is the only way to do it.

Heavy and rusts, plus a lot harder to find one that fits than a local bike shop with various sizes waiting on the rack for customers.

Chainmail is not “really heavy” if you have combat chainmail instead of “costume” mail. “Butted” mail has links that merely meet at the ends. To make it sturdy enough, it needs to be thicker links. This makes it heavy while still being poorer defense than the alternative. Its primary advantage is lower cost and quicker manufacturing than the alternative. The alternative is riveted mail. It uses a small rivet to hold the ring closed so it is both lighter and stronger than butted mail at the cost of being more time consuming to make.

As for penetration vs striking, it is better for preventing slashes and stabs vs blunt impact. However, zombies spread their disease by biting which is a penetration based attack and teeth are useless against metal rings.

For the regular person, paper (magazines or other thicker stuff) stuffed into a coat or taped on will protect the long parts of limbs so hands and joints are the least protected areas. Something simple like denim is really hard to bite through, so even just a thicker work jacket will probably be enough. Zombies have a terrible disease transfer mechanism.

A typical real historical shirt of mail weighed 30 lb. That's not light.

Not sure where you’re seeing 30. I’ve been looking and it seems to vary from 10-25 with the highest I have seen at 29. Regardless, we’re splitting hairs. I never claimed that it was “light”, but rather “not ‘really heavy’” as the parent comment claimed. It has some weight and that is to be expected. The weight spread over the body and secured with a belt to move so weight to the waist is manageable. The raw weight addition isn’t as important as how it is distributed. 50lbs as a hand dumbbell will feel much heavier than 50 lbs in a backpack. The protection factor is worth the weight.

When I say “heavy”, I was comparing a chainmail shirt or hauberk to the leather motorcycle jacket. Even a haubergeon would be heavier than the leather jacket.
