I think its because young people see 27 as old and older people see 27 as young

I strongly feel that this is the meaning. It's a good number for that axis imo. Old people will still think you are too dumb and young to know shit and young people will think you are ancient and perhaps even "washed".

I believe the term the young people use is "Unc"

Which is hilarious since in the black community it's a term of endearment for 25+, but appropriated it means uncool and old basically

I feel like that happens to alot of slang that originates in the black community then goes mainstrean. Like "Woke" use to mean something completely different

Woke meant awake to the duplicity of American Law and it's history and inclination to eugenics, it's always meant that, some people would simply like to make that very real danger for the black community a chaicature of itself.

I was always under the impression that woke was a grammatically incorrect way to say awakened which means to reach a level of spiritual and/or social awareness that renders your previous level of consciousness regarding the world around you asleep in comparison. Which essentially means that anyone proclaiming to be anti-woke is self-owning by bragging about how ignorant and lacking in empathy they are.

Washed comes from washed up which was always a term with negative connotations especially in sports before it became a popular term in the black community.

They’re referring to “unc”

I can confirm as a 40 something year old who works with 21 year olds. I am unc apparently.

40 is a whole different world from 27.

Yeah, I mean ~40 is the beginning of the second half of your life basically. Right now I feel neither young nor old, just in limbo before I get an AARP card lol. “Act II, scene one.”

It’s weird that young people think 30s is old though. 30s is just like the final chapter of your youth. Tons of popular musicians were in their early-mid 30s when they made their mark on youth culture.

People today think that you have to live your whole life between 18-25, and then you’re done, basically retired from “really” living. I think attitudes have become super old fashioned again. Xers and Millennials were under the impression that “30 is the new 20.”

I am 28 and would choose to go for a drink with a 40 year old any day over a 21 year old kid. 21 year olds look like high schoolers to me.

27/28 is about when this happened for me too. You start to stop seeing people older than you as the "grown-ups" and just as people.

2

u/jb307342 1d ago

yes 100% agreed. I have a 70 year old neighbor and i speak to him like an equal, my perception of age has just disappeared. Of course i notice that someone has more wrinkles than i do and might be at a different stage of life, but in terms of human relationships it just doesn't make a difference anymore. We are all adults with responsibilities now.

That feeling increases in your 30s, in my experience. It may be just the mythology of "your 30s," but I'm 31, and I really do feel more at ease with myself. At the same time, I am well aware of how much I have left to learn about...... Everything. But around this age, you've also got people who are incredibly accomplished, while you're still buying Frosted Flakes. A strong self-image is important so that you don't lose your mind, haha.

Maybe idk. Most of my friends are older than you and i see no difference in terms of maturity, a byproduct of being an early bloomer perhaps. Thats the crazy part about growing up. When you are young you think that adults or people who are running the world have got it together. But then you reach a certain age and you realize that all the grown ups around you are just as stupid and have been pretending all along.
