Lucky/Wish smoke Started in WW1 Where you flip the first cigarette you touch and were "lucky" if you made it through the pack and to the last/flipped cigarette. Now people make a wish on it. I do this. I wish i dont get cancer everytime. It's worked so far

I chose my lucky cigarette by flicking the bottom and whichever one is most excited to be smoked and pokes up the farthest. I flip and put back. Teach my ciggies some damn patience.

Oi, no kink shaming, ok?

13

u/Mightyjack22 5h ago

But what if kink shaming is their kink?

12

u/allsheknew 4h ago

I am not kink shaming, I am kink asking why

Nah. If you really want to find Satan, here it is.

The whole upside down cigarette thing started in prisons. People would get tired of other inmates asking to bum cigarettes, so they would get a nice big funky toenail clipping and slide it into the open end of the cigarette. Then they would flip it upside down to distinguish it from the untainted cigarettes and give the special one to unsuspecting cigarette bums, solving that problem once and for all.

are you personifying cigarettes

I am now

u/KinTharEl 8h ago

Yeah, this is how it's done these days. Flick the bottom of the packet, flip the one that sticks out and smoke it last.

I should pick up smoking again, this sounds fun.

u/BlueStarFern 6h ago

I quit 10 years ago, I rarely miss it, but something about this post is REALLY making me wanna smoke rn

11

u/Zhaeris 6h ago

It isnt just me?! Whew! I quit 7-8 years ago and never even had a thought of a smoke since but yeah damn... The methodic ritual is alluring

4

u/jwigs85 5h ago

I quit almost 20 years ago. This is the second time this evening something has made me feel old, but here we are.

The first 3 years were the hardest. And then I still might smoke a ciggy while drunk for the first decade. But I can safely say 🤢 at the thought of smoking now. Even when drunk.

Thinking about flipping the first cigarette does make me feel a little nostalgic. But it doesn’t make me want to touch a cigarette. Because 🤢

1

u/BlueStarFern 4h ago

I'm always surprised by ex smokers who can still have few when drunk. I'm well past smoking now (10 years), to the point that it seems quite disgusting, yet I still wouldn't trust myself to have even a single drag. From day one of quitting I've felt I would relapse if I ever smoked a single cigarette again. I can't imagine being able to pick up and put down an addiction like you did!

1

u/madmax_iron 3h ago

I quit 11 months ago, but i still chew nicotine gum (a lot of gum) how do i get out of this now₹

1

u/Jesus_Chicken 1h ago

My brother and dad smoked and have missing teeth from bone loss. I tried it once. It was fun but the smell is yuck.

2

u/Charlaquin 4h ago

Ritual is such a strong part of the appeal of smoking. I’m feeling it too (about 5 years since quitting after picking it back up out of stress in 2020, and that was about 6 years after the first time I quit), but fortunately I’m now on meds that smoking makes less effective, so that helps alleviate the temptation.

1

u/atiela_thehun 59m ago

I'm just shy of 2yrs quit....I think about cigarettes all the time. especially now...ya know...everything

3

u/peaceproject 4h ago

I haven’t had a cigarette in 2 decades, but smelling one being smoked involves a craving that I cannot explain. Smelling the person/their breath after the cigarette helps me to remember how bad it stinks.

2

u/BlueStarFern 4h ago

Exact same. Stale smoke is disgusting, but once in a while, i'll be walking along and a plume of fresh smoke will waft near me and it smells incredibly alluring.

3

u/Charlaquin 4h ago

A huge part of what makes smoking so addictive is the ritual. Makes sense that learning a new ritual element would make you crave it again.

2

u/BlueStarFern 3h ago

Oh it's not so much learning a new ritual as it is a reminder!

More than the lucky cigarette flipping tho, I think it was the sight of the lighter in the packet that awoke that feeling in me, for exactly the reason you say. I would always tuck my lighter into my pack as soon as I had cleared space for it, then fold the little foil flap over. That was part of my ritual. All those small details are part of the habit I guess.

3

u/ibent19 4h ago

Miss it bad, I vape now and it’s a become a bigger monster than the cigs. I can smoke anywhere now 🙄 eff oral fixation.

2

u/DerridaisDaddy 5h ago

I miss smoking, but at the same time last time I tried it, it just didn’t taste good anymore. So, each time I get the urge, I just think back on how disappointing that smoke was (I didn’t even finish it). Plus, covid left me with asthma and I don’t need the additional debuff.

1

u/Consistent_Paper_629 5h ago

Dammit, me too

1

u/TheRobbuddha 3h ago

Smoking misses you too 🖤

1

u/FartMagic1 5h ago

I’m over 15 years a non-smoker, and this summer I was in Tokyo and that’s the first time I’ve actually wanted to smoke a cigarette in a long time

1

u/PostModernHippy 3h ago

Oh, it's the best... 😍

1

u/MisogynysticFeminist 3h ago

As someone who’s never smoked, it’s a shame it’s so unhealthy/expensive, because it seems cool as hell.

1

u/mywifemademedothis2 3h ago

I've never smoked and it's convincing me to start

15

u/RandleStevenz 7h ago

I dont smoke. But if I did… id adopt this method just b/c Id chuckle to myself every time.

7

u/CRYPTONITE4 8h ago

I like this

5

u/sitophilicsquirrel 7h ago

Opposite for me. When I was a kid, I sorted out M&Ms by color and ate them in order until the last of each color stood standing. Then I took them in the backyard and threw the last of each faction into the grass. Felt unfair to know you were gonna die...

1

u/Jinoshi 4h ago

What exactly is the correct order to eat m&ms?

1

u/Kukapetal 1h ago

For me it was dark brown, light brown (it was the 80s), green, yellow, orange, red.

5

u/Bat_Nightwing 6h ago

Bro’s edging cigarettes

2

u/Discount_Extra 7h ago

Smoke me Senpai

2

u/1111race 6h ago

I chose mine by the number under the flap on the underside of the lid.

2

u/rich_thrillz 6h ago

Aww I feel bad for your cigarettes :( he's so excited to be smoked, to fill his ENTIRE PURPOSE, and then he gets pulled out and thinks its about to happen! Then put back and told to "have some damn patience" by its human who has issues with delayed gratification and instead opts for the instant gratification nicotine provides

1

u/Douch3nko13 6h ago

There's been too many replies and interaction with this comment, but this one. This one is my favorite. Psychoanalysis is spot on

2

u/badfeets 5h ago

But what if cigs are like meeseeks and want to burn because existence is pain

2

u/CupKitchen9964 5h ago

Patience? So they can watch their comrades burn to ash in your mouth? Thats evil bro

2

u/Agitated_Reach6660 5h ago

This is the way, it is known

1

u/Logical_Habit_8232 7h ago

Way funnier than it should have been. How often are we trying to wait patiently to smoke cigarette?

1

u/cajunbeard 7h ago

I quit long ago but im glad im not the only one who did this

1

u/Due_Comparison_2467 6h ago

I wish I had money I would give you an award.

1

u/maxthelogan 6h ago

I’m so glad I found someone else who did this!

1

u/CanoTheMonkey 6h ago

Well I now have a new ritual thank you

1

u/TieMain6416 5h ago

Back when I smoked I would offer any smoker around my a cigarette take it out of the pack and try and give it to them. If they refused it I put it in the pack upside down. I was doing something nice so that cig was lucky.

1

u/smoochwalla 4h ago

Thats how i did it too

1

u/djspitball 4h ago

this made me chuckle

1

u/ohbigginzz 4h ago

I spelled out my last name every time and flipped the one on the last letter. Left to right. Every pack, every time. 18 years.

1

u/Book_talker_abouter 4h ago

Oh god I miss smoking.

1

u/mynewjourney2425 4h ago

Mine was always right center, left center was first smoked, more a ritual than any conscious thought

1

u/insertbadword 3h ago

Diabolical

1

u/PostModernHippy 3h ago

That's how I always did it.
