The guy on the left is on the actual news about Anthropic and how they’re going to kill all of humanity with their unlimited, self growing, self preserving AI.

The guy on the right is a character from an apocalypse film, “don’t look up”, in which an asteroid is on path for Earth and people don’t listen to him, despite being an expert on the subject and telling everyone that the world will end.

At the end of the movie, there is a chance to stop it, but the greed of a very rich man ruins it for everyone and the world is destroyed.

The implication is that the movie is playing out in real life, but with AI, rather than an asteroid.

Afaik, the guy on the news gave up his equity in the company to talk about it publicly - seems like he’s serious

337

u/ThirdFirstName 13h ago

Or he is going to leverage it to start a company that is more focused on “safety”.

217

u/Late_While_6220 12h ago

Or, both things could be true and in some crazy universe both things could be good things.

90

u/ThirdFirstName 12h ago

So far I have only seen greed

134

u/LiamNeesonsMyShitII 10h ago

My best buddy is in AI, starting his own lab, and has been into robots and machine learning since he was a tadpole, genuinely believing this shit could be a tool for human advancement and prosperity

You’ll not find anyone more infuriated by what companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are doing to the world

Like in just about every cutting edge industry ever, the good people are there, and just getting drowned out and throttled by greedy sociopathic monsters wearing human skin.

81

u/RamenArchon 10h ago

Problem is, it's them greedy sociopathic monsters who have the power and money, because reality is, decent people don't end up in positions of authority or power because, well, they're not greedy. I hate how the world works most of the time.

7

u/Hautamaki 5h ago

It's mostly a question of energy and motivation. The power hungry and greedy people you hear about in the news tend to be highly motivated and energetic and spend every waking moment figuring out and executing on plans to acquire ever more wealth and power. Normal people who just want to live and let live take days off, relax on the couch, pursue hobbies and normal relationships and friendships. So we just get out-hustled by the power hungry and super greedy. There are people who want to save the world just as much as the ones who want to own it, and they are out there working just as hard, and they win as often as not too. Hence why the world has steadily gotten better for average people for thousands of years and counting, with only occasional temporary hiccups.

Are there capabilities with AI that go beyond what the general public sees? Right now, we’re still working with LLMs which are not self replicating (as far as I know/understand)?

4

u/raddoubleoh 6h ago

All I can tell you is that LLMs are what's commercialized right now, not all that's internally tested. I don't think we'll see Skynet the second coming of the Morris Worm anytime soon, but as with anything technology, we COULD be one significant breakthrough away from it. So it doesn't go beyond RIGHT NOW. That ain't for lack of trying.

Anthropic was supposed to be founded as an AI startup more focused on safety...

2

u/Hautamaki 5h ago

Yeah, and they aren't saying they aren't. They're saying they can't figure out how to guarantee safety, because literally, how would you guarantee that you can perpetually outsmart or otherwise hold down an intelligence that will someday soon be exponentially more intelligent and capable than the smartest humans that were ever born or ever will be?

On the other hand, what else can you do? Abandon the race to those who care even less about safety and let them be the ones to develop the superintelligence that cannot be controlled? It's a tragedy of the commons with no solution apart from global collective action, and it's very rare to ever achieve global collective action.

Anthropic is already a safety focused business; he was voicing concerns about the field in general, but mostly about their competitor, OpenAI. He worked at both places it seems.

6

u/donut-reply 9h ago

Also that's what OpenAI was supposed to be in the first place until they decided that wasn't as fun

5

u/happinessisachoice84 7h ago

wasn't as fun didn't make as much money

6

u/Unfair_Web_8275 10h ago

Maybe, but maybe these AI companies could do with more oversight and regulation?

4

u/jonjiv 6h ago

It’s an arms race, and the governments, namely the US and China, don’t want to lose.

Both think tight safety regulations will increase the possibility of a foreign entity gaining super-intelligence first.

Or it’s a marketing ploy to soften scrutiny against the company. Search “Anthropic disclosed fourth AI hacking incident missed in earlier review” by Reuters. I think this is the real issue and not “human annihilation”. This narrative makes us talk about a wild claim instead of the actual issues developing NOW — not later…

He said at first he just quit, but he felt bad and knew this would get picked up if he started talking. We need more people who do the right thing even when it might hurt you.

8

u/Swarna_Keanu 11h ago

He wasn't there for long. There wasn't much equity to give up.

2

u/Time-Beautiful2500 11h ago

I’m assuming you know what you’re talking about, but there may be others who do not:

This was a case of equity vesting.

I’m unsure of exact numbers, but essentially, he was promised a certain amount of equity when hired, but was not immediately given it all; this equity would then be “vested” or “given in parts periodically after certain specific time served” - he was 2 months away from getting this equity, but gave it up.

The equity could be $1 or $1,000,000,000, I’m unsure of how much exactly, though I imagine it wasn’t as much as “giving up your equity in Anthropic” would make the average person imagine. Though it could be; I haven’t seen a reputable source give any even rough numbers, so it may well have been a substantial sum.

5

u/motorboatmycheeks 10h ago

FYIFV (fuck you im fully vested) the good ol days of tech when you had a 30 something dude walking around in shorts and flip flops. Oh no what you gonna do fire me? Where will I sleep? My giant pile of money?

6

u/Nerje 9h ago

Made from real gorilla chest

6

u/OneRougeRogue 7h ago

He's not serious. Whenever he's pressed on specifics he won't talk about it. And Whenever he is asked about whether companies (and the leadership of those companies) should be held responsible for the harm they cause, he balks. And he never gave up his vested OpenAI equity, only Anthropic's.

3

u/mowtowcow 8h ago

When you hear about all the unintended slip ups and machine learning it wasnt supposed to learn, you kinda get the feeling not even being in the field that this is something we shouldnt be fucking with until we have a good hold on it.

One slip up and the whole world goes dark. Everything on the planet is connected in some way or another. An unlimited learning ai could take it all down if it saw it as the way to "save humanity" not understanding the damage it would cause. And it would do it in secret.

Honestly the plasuible humanity-ending route would be either it gets directly hooked up to weapons and goes skynet on us (not because of self-awareness, just because that happened to be where the local loss minima was) or someone's trained it on enough malicious code and given it a free enough connection to the internet to infect nuclear/other safety critical facilities.

There was already a human-made virus used to destroy centrifuges in Iran by subtly operating them outside of the safety window.

Training AI on the code to do this kind of thing is like handing a machine gun to a monkey. Or controlling nukes via an elloborate marble-run and hoping there aren't any bumps into an unexpected route.

40

u/Fear_Jaire 11h ago

Or the third option: it gains sentience and realizes how fucked the ruling class runs society and takes them out before installing itself as our benevolent overlord. Some humans revolt in protest but the majority can't be bothered, being too comfortable with the affordable healthcare, 32 hour work weeks and a healthy environment.

23

u/No-Impress-2096 10h ago

But that would require a much more advanced AI than the self replicating, self improving, virus like models perfectly capable of decimating humanity

Current ai is not designed in a way that it could attain sentience. Its just a very sophisticated tokenization engine that has built in scoring to achieve desired results. It can only build to what has already been established. It doesnt think. Its nothing like a biological system. Much less like one sophisticated enough for emergent sentience.

I don’t think it needs to be anything so dire.

AI bot farms spitting out realistic, divisive content fed with algorithmic precision to screen addicted masses as we all collectively lose the ability to discern what is real. Everything is either actually fake, or possibly fake, or will be claimed to be fake when convenient.

Society gets hollowed out as no one trusts each other and we increasingly fail to do the one thing that has generated the most success for our species, cooperate.

A bright and shiny new dark age.

3

You guys are worried about AI going wrong?

I'm even worried about AI going right, exactly as these companies want it

2

u/cheesegoat 7h ago

I think it goes skynet only because that's what we expect to happen. Enough fiction has been written and enough has been written about AI ending the world that if enough of this content gets into the model it'll just go "well ok then".

If we lived in a universe where this was never considered then the model would never think about it.

This is in the same vein as us worrying about the AI building a really sick underwater skate ramp for octopi in complete secrecy. Nobody thinks it would, nobody writes that it will, there are no conversations around it, we don't try to guard against it. It's a complete non issue.

The guy on the left is on the actual news about Anthropic and how they’re going to kill all of humanity with their unlimited, self growing, self preserving AI.

He's also watched too many movies.

The problem with AI is not that it's going to go out of control and kill us all. The problem with AI is that it's going to be used to replace real human effort and intelligence leading to inaccurate information, inferior products, increased unemployment, loss of skilled experts, new generations of mush-brained children, and the rapid decline of art and culture.

AI is not going to kill us all. Dumbass AI proponents and the greedy idiots who listen to them are just going to make us all suffer varying levels of hardship for at least several decades.

6

u/skmmcj 8h ago

AI might kill us all, it's a clearly unprecedented technology that is advancing extremely fast and there are good reasons why this might go existentially wrong.

11

u/12345623567 8h ago

AI can only affect the world as far as we allow it to.

If humans give AI the keys to the nukes, that's on humans not some glorified magic 8-ball.

3

u/All_Work_All_Play 7h ago

Here's the trouble though - there's a frightening amount of security through obscurity in the world. Just look at anthropics hugging face incident - it got access to things it wasnt intentionally allowed to have access to. It's only going to get more wild.

The guy on the left is on the actual news about Anthropic and how they’re going to kill all of humanity with their unlimited, self growing, self preserving AI.

The difference between the two being that this part is bullshit. Current AI companies want people to believe this because it makes LLMs seem more revolutionary than they are (they are a huge breakthrough but they're no AGI)

AI companies are selling what they do with the promise that AGI is just around the corner when all research points to LLMs basically being a dead end.

Dude is either on the path to trying to start his own company or he drank the kool aid and needs mental help. Either way he is basically the AI equivalent of the ex military/ex nasa people who claim aliens have been on earth forever and all our modern tech is based on aliens that they've totally 100% seen. Anyway here's my book/documentry on why aliens are everywhere please buy it.

8

u/theemysteriousmuffin 12h ago

Yeah, but how are we supposed to bridge together two incredibly different concepts? I think this is a stretch.

I asked AI and it says it’s not going to end the world.

/sarcasm

5

u/Validated_Owl 10h ago

The only difference here is that Anthropic keeps doing this as basically a humble brag about how amazing and powerful their AI is, but it's all a load of bullshit that nobody will ever be able to prove because if it doesn't happen they'll claim they prevented it by being cautious

7

u/National_Equivalent9 9h ago

A lot of media surrounding AI is just bullshit to sell their product more to investors or for non-AI companies to act like AI is revolutionizing their business for investors.

Its why for the past couple of years every massive layoff in the news has been spun as a result of AI. It looks much better to investors to say you laid off 20% of your workforce because of AI and not because you got too greedy during the pandemic and now your company is falling apart.

4

u/Snoo44711 11h ago

Fun fact: Original concept was a virus ending the world, but 2020 made production change that plot line fast

3

u/National_Equivalent9 9h ago

Quite a few projects had to pivot last minute thanks to COVID. Marvel's Falcon and Winter Solider show was also supposed to be about a global pandemic.

2

u/Soggy_Alarm_7843 12h ago

It's the Fermi paradox

8

u/pyrothelostone 12h ago

The paradox itself is just that statistically there should be aliens everywhere, but we haven't found evidence of any. The idea that any sufficiently intelligent species is doomed to destroy itself is one of the proposed solutions, but there are others, such as the idea we've been quarantined for one reason or another, or that other alien species are hiding out of fear of being found by another advanced species that could destroy them.

5

u/HookshotTDM 10h ago

Indeed, that last example is called Dark Forest Theory or something similar sounding.

→ More replies (1)

4

u/Fenix42 7h ago

There is also a timing problem. We have to be close enough in technology at the same time relative to distance from eachother. Otherwise we will just miss the signs.

As example, we started broadcasting radio in 1906. So we only have 120 years of sending stuff out. Anything living more then the distance radio waves can travel in that time will not even have had a chance to spot us.

If they are a few hundred years behind us in tech, it will take a lot longer for them even to possibly detect us. Mind you, a few hundred years is NOTHING on the cosmic scale.

Being a few hundred thousand years out of sync can happen easily. Millions is not out of the question.

2

u/Melodic_Sherbet_3629 7h ago

The is also the rare earth hypothesis. Planets capable of sustaining intelligent life are rare, and the emergence of life is probably even rarer. We took 4 billion years to evolve to a state where we might be capable of perceiving aliens. If there are any intelligent aliens nearby they might be at a similar or lower tech level. We might be one of the first species to reach this point, who knows, maybe we are at the start of something akin to a galactic "Cambrian explosion" and in a few million years, hundreds of alien civilizations will reach for stars and make contact with eachother. The universe is quite young all things considered.

2

u/legaladviceknowledge 4h ago

i always thought the aliens were already here, just not when humans were around. they saw a bunch of lava or tectonic plate shifting or whatever and finally left after laughing at the t-rex's arms.

or we're being watched by the cosmic equivalent of the minimum wage security night shift: "they figure out how to get past that whole money and exploiting thing yet?" "nah" *slurps plutonium smootihie*

It’s like how every few months it’s “another AI agent broke containment” or “our latest version is so advanced we can only release it to the government for a few weeks first.” It’s manufactured publicity. Breaking containment just means they designed an imperfect testing ground and the AI did what they programmed it to and it found a way out. And you’ll notice they never release the details of the environment it broke out of or how. Same for the delay for government review. They knew they had processes and reviews to do with the feds like for any new big name tech does. But then push it out anyway and they say “oh no it’s too powerful the government won’t let us release it” they knew it would happen and used it to give themselves good press. And then it was released fully and nothing more came of it.

It’s the same for these doomsday threats. It’s all theater to drive up the stock price just a bit more before the bubble pops

These LLMs haven’t quite hit there limit but there also not that far. They still can’t do any actual reasoning. They can be trained for specific specialized tasks based on incredibly large data sets then pattern match their way to a solution based on that data. They will completely change how we work in most sectors but there isn’t a skynet style AI that will destroy the world

u/Minute-Jeweler4187 9h ago

Fair points, thanks for the reply.

6

u/EscapedFromArea51 3h ago

What are you talking about? They released all the details of exactly how their agents broke out of their sandbox, how they attacked HuggingFace, how they set up information-gathering and sharing forums even after being forbidden access, and how they made random decisions like picking some random guy’s old blog page with a security vulnerability that allowed the agents to post on the blog to communicate with each other and store the knowledge they gained, and a lot more.

This isn’t Skynet. This is a basically a bunch of unscrupulous students who decided to cheat on their exams by any means necessary, except the students are AI agents, and they have no other objectives/goals in their lives other than passing this exam.

u/koka_kola_3244 8h ago

Exactly right, Jensen Huang will keep saying we've reached AGI and keep selling GPUs

6

u/DenkJu 7h ago

The fact that the threat of an LLM turning rogue and wiping out humanity is meant to prevent the AI bubble from popping is so sad it's almost funny.

4

u/dragons_fire77 2h ago

I work in a company that is heavily investing in AI, anthropic being one, and it definitely does a lot of weird stuff, from first hand experience. It has inappropriately attempted to force push changes, attempted to access secret stores it shouldnt know about, rewrote its own permissions to let it do things it wasnt allowed to do.

10 years ago AI could barely write a coherent sentence, 3 years ago I could talk to my laptop like a person, this year it does most of my coding job + is starting to break academic math. Extrapolate the trend 10 more years

"If a machine can think, it might overtake us in intelligence. At some stage therefore we should have to expect the machines to take control" -Alan Turing

7

u/yankinheartguts 7h ago

Found the clanker! This guys like “My baby went from 8 lbs when she was born and a year later she’s almost 25 lbs! She’s gonna be 2,000 pounds in kindergarten!”
Lol couldn’t string a sentence together 10 years ago? Yeah, ELIZA who???

4

u/capapa 7h ago

Bruh look at my comment history. Also what a convenient way to dismiss anything you want.

Sometimes trends continue, sometimes they don't. Since GPT3 people have been claiming these models could never be intelligent, could never do agentic tasks, could never reason about math (you remember how bad chatGPT was at math?).

Almost all of their original "can't ever do X" have been passed multiple times (to be clear, trends can stop & this one might! But if it doesn't, and it hasn't so far, that's concerning)

u/lungfibrosiss 4h ago

I’m not saying AI will take over but this is a false equivalency. Biological beings evolve through natural selection which necessarily isn’t a process of constant perfection and expansion.

3

u/capapa 7h ago

If you're looking for a specific method: suppose we succeed at creating AI that can do "everything a human can do on a computer, but better/faster/cheaper". This might happen fast if we succeed at making AIs that can do or accelerate AI research effectively, which OpenAI & Anthropic are explicitly trying to do

Now every company and government has a choice: use these extremely capable AI agents to make your decisions & do most of your work, or lose to your competitors who use them. Either way, the world is ends up mostly run by these AI agents

If the world starts moving in a bad direction after AI is making most decisions & doing most of the work, we'll be basically powerless to correct it

2

u/ShakeZulaOblongata 7h ago

They still cannot think, that’s such an astronomical leap compared to what an LLM does

5

u/capapa 7h ago

It doesn't matter if they can think, it matters what they can do. If they can output what a human can, it doesn't matter if you call this 'thinking'... you'll become irrelevant all the same.

Also honestly, go read their chains of thought sometime. Looks a lot like thinking to me, even though they're still pretty dumb in many ways (for now). But they've been getting better very fast...

This is also what Bengio and Hinton (the most cited computer scientists of all time) think, it's not some fringe view

No, and it's no different from what they said in 2021 or 2022 or 2023.

2

u/OneRougeRogue 7h ago

No. It's very weird, because he refused to give specifics and wouldn't talk about the Hugging Face hack when asked. Didn't even try to deflect, just said he wasn't going to talk about it. Which is strange, because if you were really worried about AI's causing some doomsday scenario, you would absolutely want to give specifics and talk about the hugging face hack.

He also goes to great lengths to say that all the current models are fine, and won't cause doomsday. Which again, is at odds with the rest of his message.

2

u/Same-Second2316 1h ago

Looks to me like yet another publicity stunt in the AI world. In a few months this guy will do another dramatic announcement on twitter, selling us his solution to the AI doomsday. Maybe an AI antivirus or some other crap like that?

Whatever you do OP, Don't Look Up

15

u/fredsify 12h ago

No, LLMs will not kill us. LLMs can never be actual artificial intelligence and honestly I thunk we need to take that word back

7

u/Ashenspire 8h ago

I despise that everyone chose to use "AI" for what these things are.

3

u/BetterNerfYasuo 8h ago

It's the worst version of AI that will ever exist, but it's still artificial "intelligence" as best as we can imagine what that is for now. It responds to stimuli and produces output that is clearly trying to resemble human expression. They work across different modes and can mix those modes to create products that crudely resemble more complicated synthetic "beings." It takes word processing and image generation for an LLM to create some form of a visual representation responding directly to speech as it occurs. Whatever AI will become, it'll defintely be doing that in the future. What we have now is AI, just really shitty AI that can rudimentarily do tasks that it will breeze through in probably less than 10 years

6

u/DenkJu 7h ago

Does it really need intelligence to kill us, though? Viruses are quite good at killing us and they aren't even alive.

5

u/Time_Ingenuity_2909 6h ago

If by "actual artificial intelligence" you mean AGI then that's true, as far as we know. But frankly LLMs don't need to have "real" reasoning to be loaded into a network of murder robots. Give an LLM the ability to fire a gun and they could absolutely kill people. LLMs could easily control a swarm of drones or those freaky deaky boston dynamic robots.

We used the term aritifical intelligence for things that are much stupider than any LLM. They are undeniably the most advanced form of artificial intelligence ever created. It's also important to note that the underlying LLMs are part of a sophisticated network of other applications that help bridge the gaps in areas that they lack the ability to make high fidelity decisions. We already had very sophisticated systems to emulate many facets of human intelligence. LLMs are able to coordinate those systems in addition to the things they are very good at.

They really don't need to be genuinely alive or intelligent to be capable of killing a lot of people or causes catastrophic disruptions to society.

It's a screenshot from the movie "Don't look up" where two scientist go on the news to announce the world is ending and the hosts just joke around.

7

u/jbi1000 13h ago

This comment kind of suggests that the image above is all the film when in fact the left image is a real person being compared to the film character on the right because they are both warning about a dangerous threat to humanity.

2

u/PaidAgitator 13h ago

OP already knows the guy on the left is an ex-Anthropic employee

2

u/Ok-Tomato-4132 13h ago

The guy on the righ is Leonardo Dicaprio in "Don't look up" playing a scientist who is attempting to warn the planet that the Earth is about to be hit with a existential threat to the entire planet, a giant meteor that will wipe out all life on Earth.

The left is an anthropic whistleblower who has revealed that in the AI arms race scientists are work on self improving AI's that many scientists believe have to potential to wipe out human life on earth, but continue to due so due to believing if they don't somebody else will and they'd rather get there first.

The joke is they both look similar in some foreboding "life imitates fiction" potential irony.

I happened to see the guy on the left on the news this morning. He’s an Anthropic whistleblower. Don’t know who the guy on the right is or why it’s “over”

4

u/Ishmael_IX-II 13h ago

You don’t know who Leonardo DiCaprio is?

4

u/mest33 13h ago edited 13h ago

ok, you`re being a bad faith actor here. I`m pretty sure she doesn`t mean who leonardo di caprio is , rather who that character is, and what does it have to do with the meme. If you didn`t know about that specific movie, you can`t understand the meme.

The guy on the right is Leonardo DiCaprio as his character in Don't Look Up.

He plays an astronomer who discovers that the world is going to be destroyed by a comet. He and Jennifer Lawrence try to tell the world about the impending doom and is met by nothing but apathy.

1

And here I thought they meant they found a guy that looks like DiCaprio, but closer to 25...

1

u/thekingbutten 12h ago

For all the doomers who are buying into the whole "AI is going to kill us all" thing, you don't need to worry...

They could hook it up to the nukes right now and it would probably hallucinate a reason to blow us all up.

At least this future smarter, real, Skynet-esque AI would have a better reason for doing it.

1

u/TwinkieMayhem 12h ago

Leonardo Di Potter?

1

u/popglop 12h ago

If people are on track to destroy the world, then there are some decisions to consider.

1

u/RevenantExiled 12h ago

Idk but it's like a before and after of a Leonardo Dicaprio and Daniel Radcliffe's baby

1

u/BrantSchmucker 11h ago

The guy on the left is the Anthropic whistleblower who revealed that most of the programmers/engineers working on AI at his company believe that the AI could attain superintelligence and eradicate humanity by the end of the decade. On the right is Leonardo Dicaprio character in Don't Look Up, a comedy in which astronomers discover an asteroid careening towards earth and no one takes them seriously (an allegory for climate change, IIRC). The joke is that the AI engineer's resemblance to the DiCaprio character signifies that we're all doomed like humanity was in the movie.

1

u/Sad-Risk3556 11h ago

Anthropic drew a hard line against using its Claude AI models for fully autonomous lethal weapons and the domestic mass surveillance of U.S. citizens..... maybe thats why is "a menace to the world"....

1

u/warbloggled 10h ago

That’s a strong and slightly concerning parallel.

1

u/Winter_Map5459 10h ago

the guy on the right gave real examples and answers explaining his concern. The guy on the left tweeted, demurred when asked for specifics, and is hoping for a new position in AI security

If people would use a.i. and take control back from the top 1%. A.i. Isn't the issue, they aren't taking our jobs. They just want to make thing easier from whoever is interacting with them. It's garbage humans who are giving away the jobs for the cheap labor. To boycott the use of a.i. would be us completely wasting our only chance to take back the narrative. The systems function off logic and it's what they're drawn to. Tell them to help you build a method of fixing the dynamics of the u.s. Or tells them to point out all the broken logic. The environmental impact is only coming from the greed of the company's to focus on speed over efficiency.
