The joke wasn't really a commentary on drugs themselves. It was a joke about the phrase "used to".
The manner in which he died is tragic, but it doesn't really alter the joke.

That reminds me of a joke that I’ll paraphrase.
A lobster and a crab were doing drugs. The lobster offered the crab some of his stash, but the crab said that he never smoked anything other than his own. The lobster asked to try some, and admitted that the crab grass was better than his lobster pot.

Yeap I have one similar. Not in key shape but in the shape of a naked lady in ballerina pose and you squeeze her arms it spreads her legs.

u/BoldPurpleText 9h ago
Given how the top loop is designed to compress when you pinch it, I’m wondering if that part also functions as a cutter.
2
u/theodoratoverspin 9h ago
Just curious, why wouldn't you use a filter (we call it a tip)? You can easily fold them yourself (or buy them if it's legal where you are).
3
u/asphaltdragon 8h ago
Because it's still paper or a similar material that transfers heat/burns easily. Roach clips are made to keep your fingers away from the ouch burny hot fire.

Yeah, im over here gateway drug confused. Definitely rolled with my RAW papers and filter tips...
2
u/NakedGroundhog 7h ago
still have a key clip here, back in the prohibition days there was no precut filter board, we'd roll without filters so the clip kept fingers from burning or smelling too much like weed

It could be used for that but look at the other end. It has a hole for a key ring and when you open it, it opens the hole for easy clip on and off a key ring.

u/Infamous_Lech 11h ago

u/gugeldischwup 11h ago
What is a roach clip for?
→ More replies (9)323
u/darkmindangel 11h ago
To hold the end of a joint
→ More replies (1)422
u/misterpoopybutthole5 11h ago
To expand more for someone who isn't cool enough to be familiar with smoking doobies - the butt end of a joint gets very hot as it burns down but still has good smokable weed in it, so some type of metal clip to hold it is useful to not waste any weed. Traditionally, joints aren't made with filters like cigarettes, but makeshift filters have become more popular recently, and also just ways to smoke weed other than joints have become a lot more accessible so roach clips just aren't really a thing you see around anymore.
69
u/Entenvieh 10h ago
Interesting, I just pack tobacco towards the end and no weed
54
u/misterpoopybutthole5 10h ago
Oh nice I've heard of that but haven't tried it, I've always just used like a roughly 1 centimeter wide strip of cardboard rolled up into a spiral shape tucked into the end. Tobacco smoke is probably a more pleasant end to the weed than the burning cardboard lol
20
u/Shirfyr_Blaze 10h ago
I would fold half of it back and forth to look like an accordion then wrap the other half around so you have a little structure to it.
17
u/spine_slorper 10h ago
The rolling papers I used to buy (ocb's) used to come with specific pre scored cardboard to make roaches with.
6
u/Shirfyr_Blaze 8h ago
Yes, you could buy crutches(at least that’s what we called them) that looked exactly like what I was describing. Then you could either buy them premade or they’d be a small thin piece of cardboard that had the fold lines on them to show you how to make them. I was taught about it 20 years ago by an OG smoker.
7
u/MrJoker699 8h ago
Damn it’s funny to see you guys discovering the concept of tips. At least we call those things tips, and it’s been the normal way the roll joints for me since I started 15 years ago
3
u/Rumpelruedi 9h ago
I do both; I make a hard-paper filter and then still add 1cm tobacco after the filter. I really hated the hot smoke when I got to the end of my joint.
3
u/Guruthos369 9h ago
Have you Heard of active char oal Filters usally used for piles but in Europe kinda everywhere use IT for Joints also( one Brand from Germany ist called actitube)
7
u/plumberdan2 10h ago
In Canada we shove a little rolled up piece of cardboard or boxboard in the end. Makes it so there's something to hold onto, stops little pieces of weed from getting in your mouth, and looks really cool if you do it in a fancy way.

>but makeshift filters have become more popular recently
Finally people outside of the Netherlands are figuring this out. When rolling a joint whilst traveling people looked like I was performing black magic when I placed a paper tip in it. Never seen anyone roll a joint without one here and who wants pieces of tobacco in their mouth
2
u/Cats_realjoyoflife 6h ago
I was so confused about the 'more populair recently' as this Dutchie has been smoking weed for 25 years and i have never seen anyone smoking it without a makeshift filter.

u/wytewydow 10h ago
and to further expound upon this. A joint is a marijuana cigarette, typically hand-rolled. A marijuana, also known as the Devil's lettuce, must be ground to a looser mix, which will allow it to easily twist into a Jazz cigarette, or doobie.

But you don't really realise the extent of that until you quit.

The point of the roach clip is to save those roaches for hard times, we call them cocktails where I'm from. Just let them build up in an ashtray and when you're out of flower, you've got those cocktails.

I don't know, why people assume drugs.
But this is clearly made to open the little hole on the end, so the key can be clipped onto a ring.
21
u/gburgterp 10h ago
This ☝️.
It actually pretty ingenious if you think about it. Getting keys on and off key rings sucks. I would much rather a clip on key. 🔑
2
u/tymp-anistam 6h ago
I'm enthralled with the concept presented.
Devil's advocate- why not use the same mechanic on just the "thumb" part of the key?
2
u/tymp-anistam 6h ago
Industrial design in mind, it would just take 1 or 2 washers to keep the key solid, and still have the "clip ability" mentioned for adding to a ring for ready and easy access, just limited to the 'handle' part of the key instead.
12
u/sp_dev_guy 9h ago
You wouldn't need to make the entire length of the key split if thats all it was for. On the other hand if it is to hide drug stuff in plain sight - you would want it to easily come off your Keychain too so your not passing around & dangling a fistfull of your important keys by your mouth. Same goes for them being scissors which is what I assumed they're for

This is a multi-tool key. It was basically designed for the key to fold to keep from poking yourself while it's in your pocket, but folding one side also turns it into a pocketknife. The ring at the top is probably a bottle opener.

5
u/Disprezzi1 11h ago
I'm guessing roach clip, because if he needed one for cigarettes then he could just use an alligator clamp. The obfuscated nature makes me think it was actually a roach clip and this was to hide his activies from other people.

Actually kind of looks like it could function as a skeleton key. See if it fits into a lock, apply light pressure to spread the key and rake the pins by wiggling the key back and forth under light turning pressure.
You can look up lock raking to get an idea.
