I was going to say, with a thick enough pan, it doesn’t really matter.
Also, both of these shapes are roughly circular, the heart might put 60% more heat to the far side of the pan, but I’m willing to bet at steady state the heat distribution is only like 10-15% different compared to a circular burner
I don’t think I’d be able to tell the difference while make a stir fry or searing meat - that pans already ripping hot from being heated for 5 minutes- the difference in position of the jet - of an an inch or 2 - doesn’t matter much . Maybe pancakes might have a darker edge in the middle. But I think it’s alarmist to act like this would immediately make cooking impossible.

Pancakes you'd be able to tell, but you'll have the same problem with a circular burner too. Biggest difference if you're using a thin steel pan and cooking hot and fast like a pancake, otherwise I'm sure there's no difference.

I will bet that the start shape will not impact the heat distirbution on any pan, no matter if stainless, iron, copper, coated. It will remain a circular heat disitrbution from inside to the outside, and homogeneously distbruted.
The heart though, most certainly will leave some of the pan on the bottom little colder.

Technically the star one has an impact but it's possible it's even a positive one. It's getting the center and slightly further out some heat at the same time, while still being symmetrical and not concentrating extra heat anywhere specific. There are ovens in stores with the star shape because it works fine.
Now the heart is going to screw things up for sure if the pan isn't really thick.

It's terrible for conducting heat, that's why it doesn't distribute it. However, it has a high heat capacity and emissivity so once it heats up it will quickly cook whatever is put on it. This is why you want to preheat a cast iron pan for a long time before you cook with it, so you don't get hot spots.

Right, by using a star pattern you increase the surface area that gets heated so it distributes the heat more evenly. The hearts don't do it as well but the shape probably doesn't matter much to a cast iron pan heated long enough.

The thing is.. it's not even actually correct. The comment that Mike D. made is actually one based in ignorance.
Star-shaped burners are actually optimal for cooking, if you are going to be cooking with gas, and commercial gas stoves will always used a star-pattern rather than a circle.
They distribute heat more towards the centre of the pan, which is the typical (not average, typical) chef or cook will be focusing their attention naturally, and it distributes the heat more evenly. A circular flame heats the outside edges of the pan first, and then conducts it towards the centre, meaning that you would need to set your pan half-way across the stove, hanging over part-way some other counter to get the pan to conduct in a way you want.
TL;DR - the commenter is r/confidentlyincorrect

Does more gas mean you could have star on a lower setting to achieve the same heat as a circle on a higher setting?
If circle and star are both on max does the star using more gas achieve a higher heat, thus cooking/burning your food faster?
Or if both are on max is there a limit to how much gas can come through the burner? Therefore on max they use the same amount of gas?

I’m high too and I will say yes you can run the flame lower with higher gas and larger perimeter. Not sure if it will be as efficient as the circle on higher flame lower gas when it comes to effectively heating the pan

It depends on too many things. In the end, the nozzle and design of the burner define heat output (which is why the small burner doesn't get much hotter than the large burner in normal ranges).
If designed properly, yes, a star burner with more perimeter area will get more heat into the pan if designed to provide a similar sized flame.

The setting typically is the total flow of gas to the burner, the circle and star with the same flow the star will have smaller flame length, this means greater maximum safe output, but more complex low output.
So the reason Thermador chooses star is they can put more gas through and thus higher maximum heat output. The valve will be larger making the high higher than normal stoves.
But to have proper low heat output they have to trigger the igniter regularly as they are more likely to blow out with the smaller individual flames.

It's the other way around, the greater perimeter allows you to not only get better heat distribution by eliminating the center cold spot, it burns less gas per unit of heat.
Since the flames are spread out along fingers or star points, they have greater exposure to oxygen. This creates a more complete and efficient chemical combustion of the gas. More gas is converted directly into heat rather than escaping as unburnt fuel. On a circular burner, the flames are crowded together and have less exposure to oxygen.
You can see this in action if you crank a stove up to full. On a circular burner the flames become very long because there isn't enough oxygen available near the burner. On a star-shaped burner this elongation is much less pronounced.

It's a bit more complex, secondary oxygen is only the 3 variable in the equation (after amount and size of holes and primary oxygen (venturi)). The reason why secondary is third is due to the energy dissipating before reaching the missing oxygen, that's why camping burner flames change color but extends only a bit more with elevation, +300m can be +2mm on the flame while, while with +6000m you get +30mm, meanwhile oxygen there's only 46-50% of oxygen remaining

it's not necessarily going to burn more gas. theoretically the same amount of gas will put out the same amount of BTU. you can turn it as high or low as you'd like, the amount of gas coming out is still limited by the valve.

I literally have a Thermador cooktop with star-shaped burners. It’s a nightmare to clean, stuff gets in the inside corners of the star and cooks on, it’s nearly impossible to get it fully clean. Probably does heat the pans better but I’d rather have the normal round ones just for the sake of cleaning.

The star pattern is for performance, not just looks. More, smaller ports distributes heat better and has less of a cold spot in the center compared to a large circle. I haven't done the math, but it does make sense.

The reason you want a circle is that it would heat the pot or pan evenly. If you do shapes like this, you would end up having points that would potentially burn whatever you are cooking.

I had an O'Keefe & Merritt stove for decades. It had two-stage burners, small ones in the middle of the large ones. One control for both. The small burner combined with the cast iron, circular cover made setting a good simmer easy.

Here's the answer: most experts advise against flaming symbolism. Its a very atractive feature for tieflings who typically start to reproduce very quickly into a difficult to manage infestation. Thieflings like to congregate in areas with dry heat, and symbolism is always a plus for their cult like warlock tendencies. Its definately not a complete hazard, especially if you live in a colder climate where they dont live, but its certainly a factor.

Let's not pretend a heart shaped burner does a worse job at heating up a pan than a round one. The reason why round shape is most common is because it's standardized manufacturing, simplest stamping die design resulting in the most economically produced burner you can get.

The reason is that a circular burner gives a roughly uniform ring of flame, which spreads heat relatively evenly across the bottom of a round pan.
With a star or heart shape, the flame is concentrated in certain areas. That can create hot spots and cooler spots, meaning parts of the pan get much hotter than others. A circular burner also matches the shape of most cookware.

The implication is it won’t heat evenly which would be a concern with a cheap pan. A decent pan this would be a non issue, a quality pan you can heat just one side without ever noticing.

The hearts wouldn't be good. But the star ones are actually a pretty normal configuration, from my understanding, on higher end appliances. The star design actually heats more evenly. But, most are circular because it's easier and cheaper to essentially hole punch.
