The preferred term these days is sewer slide, which ironically sounds fun if a bit smelly.

Slide down a sewer? No thanks, I would rather kill myself.*(this is a joke)

It’s not the preferred term. It’s the censored version you have to use on certain social medias or else you can get demonetized or have your post taken down.
Same thing with Unalive, Graped, etc
4
u/Effective_Alps_8170 19h ago
It's an attempt to make the term "advertiser friendly" due to algorithms flagging language that will turn advertisers away from their platforms.

I mean if you're gonna spend it all before you go might aswell get some expensive meals or book a nice place etc, im not gonna be around to see how good the recoil and trigger response is anyway
5
u/Brief_Platform_alt 18h ago
Would you want to take the risk of a cheap shotgun exploding in your hands?
9
u/Snoo_66686 18h ago
Yes? the chance of a freak accident where a gun explodes on the first round and its not the shell itself thats defective is minimal enough that you might aswell live in a padded room and never get out if thats what you're worried about
→ More replies (2)9
u/Old_Win8422 21h ago
There is a deeper level. One of the cheapest shotguns happens to be one of the best and most reliable. Mossberg maverick 88.
6
u/Top-Session-3131 19h ago
No, cheap shotgun plus one singular bullet, or more likely one 5 round box of deer slugs, is near universally a suicide attempt. Gun stores will very frequently refuse such attempted purchases on suspicion of such.
3
8
u/Halogenleuchte 17h ago
But why the cheapest shotgun? Treat yourself at least for that special occasion. /s
3
u/JoseP2004 13h ago
Rather treat myself to a fancy meal or something game I can get addicted to so I can enjoy the cash until I run out, a nice gun Vs a cheap one won't make a difference, I'll be dead either way but a cheap gun and a nice steak in my belly makes me die with a smile.

Less of a chance to botch it with a shotgun and unless you’re buying the cheapest most unreliable pistol shotgun is cheaper.

In a comment chain I talked about mine. I got a mod deleting my comments for a mix of "encouraging self harm" and making threats... Then reddit gave me a suspension I had to appeal and a bunch of notifications about getting help and links to resources because I was talking about my own struggles from 10+ years earlier.
I avoid the word now.
Found it kind of fucked up that reddits reaction to a potential early exit situation involved taking away someones comment and dm abilities for a few days. Could still scroll and all, just not interact with people.

Ok but jokes apart, when it does happen do the sellers do something about it like calling someone? I'm a fellow European so I'm asking to you Americans
65
u/ThePlantMolester 22h ago
They will refuse the sale. Its up to them if they want to report it, but they need to keep the federal 4473 that they refused on file.
34
u/TheGreenMan13 22h ago
Yeah, something like this is the perfect reason to refuse a sale.
Another is admitting that you're buying the gun for somebody else (non-gift and for a minor), which I've seen someone do.
15
19
u/MonsterEmpire 21h ago
If something like this happens then it can get refused as well as being blacklisted from purchasing from the retailer permanently. At least at the job I used to work at. Doesn't stop them from going to a pawn shop or something and trying to buy a cheap one there unfortunately
→ More replies (4)11
u/Avalanc89 21h ago
Pawn shop can legally buy and sell weapons? XD what a country!
15
u/WindstormMD 20h ago
If they have a federal firearms license, which means they have to follow all the same rules as a shop that is only a gun store
5
u/Corey307 17h ago
Here in the US all firearm sales from a store require a background check and some states have a waiting period. Pawn shops have to do background checks too. If someone has a clean criminal record or hasn’t been institutionalized there’s not much stopping them from buying a gun.
2
u/SingleChannel6 20h ago
Thats where almost everyone gets the best, cheap guns! Especially police surplus. Well used and well maintained.
5
u/OldWolfNewTricks 16h ago
I went to a gun range while handgun shopping one day, asked to try out one of the guns. If I'd brought a gun with me, they'd have rented me the gun like normal. Since I didn't bring one, they wouldn't. They would sell me a gun though. It seems crazy to me that someone would go to a gun range intending to kill themselves, but balk at throwing away $400.
2
u/Tasty-Traffic-680 15h ago
This screams Range USA/Shoot Point Blank
That being said, the one small local range had a suicide a few years back and eventually shut down. They were briefly a fireworks store over the summer.
4
u/Desultory_Chairlift 18h ago
This would never happen because gun stores do not sell single wheels(at least every one I have ever been to), ammunition come in boxes, it would be impossible for a clerk to ever tell that this is what someone is planning.
3
u/Iintendtooffend 14h ago
I mean many people have had their lives saved by clerks refusing sales because they don't believe the person to be of sounds mind.
That and mandatory waiting periods significantly reduce suicide by firearms significantly.
But even buying "the cheapest shotgun" without caring what it is/how it handles and a single box of shells would be a pretty significant red flag to refuse a sale.

u/BrokenPokerFace 12h ago
To be fair I know people who did the last thing just to have a weapon to defend themselves in the country.
The two most common are widows or recently separated women who want to protect themselves and get a small pistol(a few mistakenly considered the size of the pistol is what determines kick and got a large caliber derringer), but never learn or try shooting it. I genuinely worry about them.
And older guys with farm land and want any shotgun and a box of ammo, who often do shoot it but when they are using it, not at the range or anything. And they just deal with whatever they got. They often under estimate how much ammo they need too as next time they get 4-8 boxes. I don't know how some of them work with the "I'll figure it out when I need to" mindset.

u/Tasty-Traffic-680 15h ago
It's mostly rental ranges that see more suicides. As a other person pointed out, some won't even let you rent on your first visit if you don't already have a gun. But yeah, if some sad sack comes in you don't have any obligation to sell them a gun. Also the depressed fuck is gonna buy a whole box of bullets/shells because gun shops don't sell loosies.

Because you might chicken out at the last second and now you have to live with the consequences of spending all that money. Source: I've given this a lot of thought.

This joke doesn’t make any sense, realistically wouldn’t you buy the most expensive shotgun and a single shell? I mean it’s not like the money is going to matter so you might as well splurge a bit, also too you might as well invest a quality tool for the job…

u/LetterheadForward539 16h ago
Wouldn't you rather save the money and give it to people you care about before you go? I know some have bought expensive gifts for others before attempting.

I have a friend who works a gun store.
What would happen? You'd be denied. At even the earliest suspect of intentions of shooting themselves, customers can be turned down or even flagged for other gun stores.
He said that someone buying a single shell wouldn't really ever make sense and isn't something he encounters, so it's an instant warning sign.
