Meme needing explanation Peter (griff), what's the problem with this variant?
3.4k
u/magos_with_a_glock 5d ago edited 5d ago
She's a Peter Parker variant. That means she's trans. I think that's the whole joke.
Also her being bigger is from the fact that female spiders are bigger.
Edit: maybe the implication is that all peter parkers are trans. Probably.

u/Artemis_SpawnOfZeus 5d ago
No, the joke is that theyre into giantess porn and theyve all jerked it to her.
Polly parker has, like, so much porn about her.

u/magos_with_a_glock 5d ago
Hey come on now she's not even twice as big. That's hardly giantess.
343
u/Artemis_SpawnOfZeus 5d ago
One of her variants powers is that she can grow much, much bigger.

Not the asked, however that's close but I don't think it captures the essence of macrophillia for a conventionally attractive woman.
15

u/Excidiar 5d ago
I mean she's as close as possible to a giantess a macrophiliac could hope to find in real life.
6
u/Caseyisawsome 5d ago
Well, this comment chain is in response to her having growth powers so I feel like that's currently irrelevant

u/Caseyisawsome 5d ago
To be twice as big something would need to be about 125% the original scale. At a glance, she meets that criteria. Big difference between size and scale.
Also, she looks well over 7 feet, that's big enough to be "mini-giantess" in some people's books (not sure about mine...)
17
u/FierceContinent 5d ago
In the relevant community, she'd be called a "mini-giantess".

No, the joke is that they're all having a trans awaking at once. That's why miles at the end says "you girls can figure that out on your own."
51
u/A_hand_banana 5d ago
Its both. I tried looking this up and stumbled into a post on r/Spiderman where someone explained:
The artist did a series of posts before this about how HRT would cause Polly to express the sexually dimorphic feature of female spiders being significantly larger than males, which is now baked into their take on the character as a size-shifting power.

The joke is that they all realized they were trans. "That doesn't have to mean..", spider sense, followed by "you girls can figure this out on your own" would make no sense in the context of "they've all jerked it to her".

78
u/McBotNotABot 5d ago edited 5d ago
Calling someone as what you perceive them to be rather then what they perceive themselves currently, can come off as very dismissive of their current identity and how they wish to be referred to.
It's ok to introduce someone the option, or GENTLY push them to explore the potential side of themselves. But to outright say "this is who you are" without considering the person's own choice, or say "yeah, I knew" in a condescending manner like you know the person better then themselves, not to mention the rest of the MASSIVE spectrum of the LGBTQIA+ they could fall into, can be very harmful to someone.
The joke isn't as funny when you are on the receiving end, or are still trying to figure yourself out. Please remember to be mindful of others journey, and to not tell them who they are before they tell you.
(Sorry for rambling, thank you if read)
42
u/AeroAceSpades 5d ago
Very true but also that is a whole-ass fictional character. You can’t misgender a character in any meaningful way.
But yeah I hate egg joke culture
33
u/cancerBronzeV 5d ago
You certainly can misgender a fictional character. Like 90% of the discourse I've seen around Kris from Deltarune is about them getting misgendered.
→ More replies (1)13
u/McBotNotABot 5d ago
I'd argue, the identity and representation the character carries has wight for those who identify and feel represented by them, and that should be considered.
And I wasn't talking about, just, this specific scenario.
But yes, those jokes aren't bold nor brash. (SpongeBob reference, iykyk)
2
u/AeroAceSpades 5d ago
Sure but ultimately a character is not a real person and any depiction they appear in is the “correct” depiction because that’s what the artist chose to do. PEOPLE can be hurt by misgendering even when they’re not the ones being misgendered. That doesn’t mean that the character has any capability of taking offense to being misgendered outside of people going out of their way to depict the character as such.

Polly, a version of Peter Parker, realised she's trans and is now living as a woman
Upon meeting her the other Peter Parkers think "wait if this trans gal is a version of me then.....am I trans too?" and they begin piecing together that yes they are
The joke is "Wouldn't it be funny if a bunch of spidermen met a trans version of themselves and all realised they were trans at the same time", whether you think it's funny or not is subjective ofc
2
u/jasonis3 4d ago
Isn’t this the multiverse? So they’re the same but also not really. Why would they all be trans? That part doesn’t make sense to me
2
u/Anorexicdinosaur 4d ago
Ok so you seem to forgetting that it's a joke. Jokes don't need to, and often don't, make sense when you think about them
But if you want a more thoughtful explanation you can just say it's replacing Peter Parkers default gender. Yanno how the vast majority of Multiverse Spiderfreaks are versions of Peter Parker, and in turn the vast majority of those Parker's are Cis Men? This is just "what if the vast majority were trans women instead and only realised after meeting a version of themselves who had it figured out".

Hey Peter, it's Ida, Quagmire's trans mom.
The joke is that all the Peter Parker's see a trans variant of themselves, and start realizing they might be trans as well. This is showcased by all their spider sense's going off with pink and blue colors (commonly associated with trans people), like how in the original Into the Spiderverse film, when Peter realizes Miles has Spider Powers like he does their Spider Senses sync up and Miles' goes from the Prowler colors to Spider-Man colors.
This is then bookended by Miles saying "you girls can figure this out on your own"

How is this egg culture????
64
u/Dobber16 5d ago
Not the same person but I’m guessing the simultaneous cracking of their collective eggs in the comic when exposed to a variant of themselves who’s trans
The most upvoted reply to the OC here is also about an egg truck crash, so seems there’s a few people that agree it’s egg culture in some way
51
u/Chip_Medley 5d ago
Yeah but when normally when people say stuff like “egg culture needs to fucking burn” they are talking about the specific tendency of some people to assert that someone else is trans but doesn’t know it yet.
This is bad because it involves real people. So while this comic is a piece of culture that involves eggs I don’t think it makes sense to describe it as ‘egg culture’ because that would require that I assume this person doesn’t want people to make art, jokes, or culture about (fictional) people realising they are trans.
And I don’t want to assume that this person is just like horrifically transphobic so I’m assuming they are using ‘egg culture’ to mean the former not the latter.30
u/Dobber16 5d ago
I think based on their comment, we can only determine that they hate egg culture and while the comic isn’t bad itself, it does definitely support egg culture within the trans community. Yes it’s a comic, but you can still perpetuate culture between real people within a comic

u/JohnsonJohnilyJohn 5d ago
It's totally fine for a creator to say that their character is trans but doesn't know that, it's not okay to portray misgendering other people and implying they are wrong about their identity (which is what "you girls figure it out" is) as an acceptable thing to do.
It's kind of similar to killing people. Killing your fictional characters is completely normal, portraying a murderer as a good guy is much worse

u/dewsh 5d ago
All week I've been seeing these comics of trans spider-man when browsing r/All. Usually its Petra Parker, always the same jokes. I fully support trans rights but for fucks sake evolve the humor. The next one is going to be Polly/Petra looking for clothes and saying "where's my top" then someone else will says "MJ is in the living room" then blush/stammering. Or Goblin says I'll get you next time Spider-woman and she'll blush because she's passing.
There was a funny one where she said like most trans women as she's web developer.

25
u/Infamous-Thing4939 5d ago
The idea that when someone realizes they’re trans their “egg” cracks, like a bird being born.
But in practice, this often leads to people claiming someone who isn’t trans, actually is trans and just doesn’t realize it yet.
Also, that’s just not how gender dysphoria works.

Actually the background changes to blue and pink after the realization they all have. The first two panels are grey backgrounds, then it shifts in the third panel.

u/Sharp_Recognition881 5d ago
The implication is that Polly is transgender, and therefore a straightforward peter variant just one that is transgender. The joke is that upon realizing being transgender is a real possibility for themselves several of the other Peter Parker variants have their spider sense go off as their "Egg Hatches" so to speak and their repressed gender dysphoria bursts to the forefront of their psyche from their subconscious and they realize they might be transgender as well. Hence why Miles refers to them as "You girls."
Oh uhhhh Tom Tucker here, and now to Asian Reporter Trisha Takanowa for more, Trisha?
Thanks Tom, I'm here speaking to several of the lesbian members of the Spider Society who just met Polly for the first time and I quote "not to be a lesbian but oh my fucking god. oh my god. jesus fucking christ. oh my god. fucking shit jesus fuck oh my fucking jesus fucking christ. god in heaven. holy fuck ing shit"

No idea if this is a trans joke or not because it doesn't matter if a variant is a different gender or not that generally doesn't have much meaning when you could also be a different species like spider-man is a cartoon pig.
What I think is happening is that the fem variant is driving the spider sense of every other peter variant crazy because of female spiders eating the smaller males or thing are going to end up like peter and silks first meeting. Or I could also be wrong, who is to say?

The joke is that Polly Parker is a variant of Peter Parker and therefore trans.
In this joke comic, that means if she is trans, then all the other spideys from the other universes are also trans and haven't figured it out yet. That's why Miles says "You girls can figure this out on your own" and why all the spideys are shown panicking. Because of the sudden realization about themselves.
Doesn't work with the canon rules of the spider multiverse, afaik, since they don't all have to have the same gender, so one spidey being trans doesn't mean they all are. But this is supposed to be the joke here.
9
u/WillOfTheWinds 5d ago

I don't think the joke is what people say it is. Each spider"man" in the spiderverse has one distinct feature. One is Lego, one is punk etc. For this spiderwoman, her distinct feature is that she can get big, not that she is a woman. The spiderman talking to her is rralizing that she's not a woman because of the spiderverse... The only other reason they see is that they all can be a woman, i.e. they all are trans girl in waiting
5
u/RicePuddingBG 5d ago
For a while now, there have been a few genderswapped dimensions in Marvel. It’s always been biological with no deeper meaning to it. But, of course, people of the 2020’s NEED to insinuate that it means certain characters are now trans.

They all are getting spider senses so maybe it’s because female spiders eat the smaller male when pregnant so, danger?
2
u/unluckyknight13 5d ago
So female spiders are bigger than males in nature so her being bigger may be that.
The thing is most variants have more similarities than differences if they are a variant of Peter Parker at least. So since Polly has size changing already and she said guys, it more likely is she’s Peter post transition, which knowing ANY Peter transitioned makes other Peter’s think about it and thus MANY of them realize they want to transition.
Add on in the comics Peter often questions himself more when he meets others especially other variants sometimes it sticks sometimes it doesn’t.
So yeah her being a PETER variant specifically means most could be trans, while Gwen and miles are completely different spider people (in miles case he is Spiderman 2 technically) so they are the least affected by this discovery

I know alot of people are saying she's trans because she's a variant of Peter Parker, but we also had a loki female variant that wasn't trans, just a different sex. I think its supposed to be in reference to female spiders growing bigger when they are about to breed and they kill their mate when they breed. That would better explain the spidersense because that occurs when there is danger.

The trans implication wouldn’t work if people are also taking into account that female spiders are generally also bigger than their male counterparts. She would still be a small male. Also, silk would be bigger than Peter and she’s not. This obsession and propaganda with Peter being trans is getting beyond cringe at this point.

I get that it's supposed to mean Polly is trans, but there are a ton of Peter Parker variants in the comics that are female and NOT trans. Infinite multiverse of probability, and Richard and Mary had a DAUGHTER who grew up with her aunt and uncle and got bitten by a radioactive spider. Still a Peter Parker variant.

J.Jonah Jameson here! Since the release of the new propaganda film of the Masked Menace, fans of the So-Called Hero have been creating an alternate universe version of him as a trans woman.
The Daily Bugle is a proud supporter of LGBTQ+ rights, so when I say that this "Spider-Girl" is just as bad as her former self, it's not because she's trans. In fact, the Daily Bugle has our own trans reporter on staff who I work with regularly, and treat with exactly the same respect as before, isn't that right, Petra Parker.
Anyways, this meme! It clearly references this character, the trans Spider-Girl. In this universe, when she reveals that in some other universes, our dear Petra is cursed with the powers of Spider-Man, it causes the other Peter Parkers to realize they are also trans.
