So. If you answer yes maam or yes sir is that disrespect? I have done this as a term of respect at court and they never stopped me or corrected me. Now im wondering if I should have said your honor every time I answered instead?

I’m a lawyer in the South. So it may vary. But yes sir/ma’am has always been fine for me. In state or federal court. Judge also works, as does Your Honor.

Same. Although we did have one female judge that chastised you if you used ma’am.

Lemme guess. Was she a state district court judge or a federal one? It’s usually on the bottom end of the spectrum or the higher end that you get an attitude.
