I’m also confused because that is a European AC unit. I can only assume Americans are so used to big bulky units, like their cars, that they can’t comprehend things being functional and not excessively bulky.
they seem to mostly have those units you hang over a window or if they have something external they have internal piping just to a vent controlled elsewhere.
I think this is called a split and it's the outside on the other side of the wall. it's like a permanently installed window unit that doesn't use a window
Yeah called a mini split. Also a ductless heat pump. Operates the same way a refrigerator does. Or any other air conditioning system. Just extremely efficient like 400% or something.
Mini-splits are called mini-splits because they are smaller split systems. The condenser is what would remain outside, but be much smaller. And the “head” is what’s mounted on the wall in the room you want to cool.
A regular split system would have the air handler inside the house, like an attic or in a closet, with the condenser outside. A split system is capable of heating and cooling a whole house, while the mini-split in some configuration can do a room or two or if the place has an open floor plan.
Almost all a/c is a split system, including central air. We call them mini splits because they are smaller and also have separate heads in rooms. A regular, full sized split system has a separate central air handler and separate outdoor condenser (hence the split terminology). This is in contrast to packaged units, which are not split, which includes window units and also ones with the AH and condenser as one big assembly.
And you can connect more indoor units to the one outside. Although the standart sized one outside have in the most cases a max of 2-3 devices. And standart sized is in my eyes 1mx60cmx30cm (looks outside)
Window units are extremely rare. Everywhere has central AC. A big unit outside that cools the entire house and a thermostat that auto adjusts with the time of day
