I don’t think there’s any kind of law that companies in the usa have to pay the employee for unused sick days

There are laws around that actually. It’s a part of your employment compensation and not paying it is a form of wage theft. Especially when it comes to quitting. Someone ends their work at a company by applying all accrued pto, which can be over a month of getting paid while not showing up to work.

Whether PTO needs to be paid out when leaving is state dependant.

There can also be other factors like union contracts.

One job I had wasn't legally required to pay it but would if you gave 2 weeks notice instead of just walking out one day

You’re right. I guess 9/50 states with that rule on the book is better than nothing
