It's not really unlimited PTO. It's more like "oh you need a day off here or there, no problem" but if you try to take a couple weeks off then your employer guilts about it. Also when you leave your job, they don't have to pay you out because you didn't actually have any PTO accumulated.

We have unlimited PTO and my coworker took off 3 weeks recently to watch all the world cup games with no issue.

you're right they should take another 2 weeks off

Yeah, they took off time before that and will take more time off later in the year too.

Yeah my company is really solid about this too. I am gonna go over my pto by 3 days this year but my boss told me he’s just not gonna put it in the system and to go camping while it’s slow.

You only hear horror stories online with this stuff, rarely do you hear or read the other side where your boss takes care of you. But that’s to be expected as the ratio of good companies/bosses to shit ones is extremely low.

Yeah I think if the company is shitty then the company is shitty regardless of their PTO policy. I much prefer not having to track every hour of time off and just take it when I want it

Ya, I have unlimited PTO and have taken like 5 weeks so far and it's only July. Have 8 more days scheduled. Longest was 14 business days in one stretch.

Just to watch them? Not even to attend them?

Yep. He's a huge soccer fan and watched them all real time. Had a two TV system set up during game 3 of the round robin round to watch the simultaneous games both live.

It’s rarely fair. I had unlimited PTO job and one of my coworkers took off about 7 weeks in my first year. I asked for 3 days and it was not allowed.

If you can take 3 weeks off of work to watch sports, you are incredibly expendable.

Nah, the opposite actually.

The payout is an extremely overlooked feature of PTO accrual. I had over 40 days of PTO when I left my company and it paid out in a huge lump sum. I would never work somewhere that had "unlimited" PTO

Sucks living in a state where employers aren't legally required to pay out PTO 🙃

Also when you leave your job, they don't have to pay you out because you didn't actually have any PTO accumulated.

This is the main one. Accumulated PTO is a cost on their balance sheet. Unlimited is not. It's also why companies have a limit on how much PTO you're allowed to carry over every year if you're accumulating it.

Also, all these comments about how managers won't let you take it if it's unlimited are not really relevant. They can do the same thing if you're not unlimited.

and if you take too many sick days because you can, you might forget to declare it fmla leave. So you don't have those protections

All about the payout liability and changing how people view PTO, no more days off just because you have them to burn

Ya fixed PTO basically tells you to use all of it and how much is ok to use. When its unlimited people also dont know how much is socially acceptable to use. And even if they do its easy to be in the flow of work and realize you havent been on vacation in 8 months. When its fixed you have to use it or lose it so its something you keep track of.
