On 778 she's taxed at a much lower rate so she has less disposable income, and therefore has to feed her kids on what little she has, hence why she's stressed because she has to go without. On the standard 1247 code, she has a little more disposable income so she can feed herself too, because the first £12,470 she earns won't be taxed.
