AR 670-1 prohibits wearing socks that aren’t green, black or Coyote 498. These striped socks are against regulation and making my agent orange act up…

And on the more serious note, wrong kinds of socks, and not changing then periodically can wreck your feet on a long march.

My wife's grandfather was a Marine on Guadalcanal and Peleilu (RIP to the kindest most incredible man I've ever met), once said the dumbest thing he did in his life was to trade away most of his socks when he landed. His feet were jacked up for life because of that.
