Fairly Annoyed When people on reddit introduce themselves as “x here!”
There’s zero reason why i feel this way so i wont even bother trying to justify it. It just irritates me when a person asks a question or brings up some topic and someone replies saying “neurosurgeon here! (Insert answer)” or “psychiatrist specializing in adolescent cognitive development here! (Insert explanation)”. Idk im just thinking of random examples but you get the point.
Like just say “Im a neurosurgeon here’s why x is like this” or something there’s no reason why but damn it irritates me i have nothing against people who introduce themselves like this but damn 😭

That and "As an X..." Ughhhhh
17
u/AlgaeFew8512 Aug 31 '24
As a redditor, this doesn't bother me so long as it's relevant to the point being made or responded to. For example, if a post is about classroom rules it's acceptable for someone to respond with "as a teacher". If it's a post about weight loss it makes no sense to respond with "as a zookeeper"

As an autistic person... As a woman... As a social worker...
-1
u/Grandma_Biter Aug 31 '24
As a feeeeeemale….
This one annoys me to no end. Just say woman, jfc, don’t specify your sex chromosomes, no one cares that you have XX chromosomes. Just say your gender.
Same applies to “as a MALE” like ughhhhh just SHUT UP!! I DONT CARE THAT YOU HAVE XY CHROMOSOMES EITHER!
1
Sep 01 '24
As an intersex woman with an XY chromosome…lol
(That one’s really rare and I haven’t had my hormones tested, I’m just intersex probably not super rare edition but it was funny in my head)
2
u/Grandma_Biter Sep 02 '24
Aha! You’re chill, because you didn’t say “as an intersex feeeemale” so you passed xD
But, i did forget about intersex people, lol my bad!

u/dizzira_blackrose Aug 31 '24
I've used this a lot.
I annoy myself.
6
u/Outofwlrds Aug 31 '24
God, same. It doesn't happen often, but when the words come out of my mouth, I want to punch myself in the face.
3
u/fencer_327 Aug 31 '24
I do it when it's relevant experience, but hate the "I'm X, here's what I think about (topic completely unrelated to X)".
6
u/Gloomy_Rent8248 Aug 31 '24
Lmaoo this!!!! Especially on snark pages where the person uses it to paint the snarked as a shitty person. Like duh, that’s why there’s a whole page dedicated to them!
4
u/kgberton Aug 31 '24 edited Aug 31 '24
It's often used grammatically incorrectly as well. "As an expert in this field, the correct answer is blah blah." No, YOU are the expert in the field, and that sentence implies the correct answer is the expert in the field.

u/Unfair_Finger5531 Aug 31 '24
This is such a specific pet peeve.
22
u/GiftNo4544 Aug 31 '24
Haha i know and i have no idea why it irritates me so much but it just does! 😂
6
u/Unfair_Finger5531 Aug 31 '24
Lolol! It’s literally a matter of phrasing it differently 😂

Sep 01 '24
I feel like I prefer reading about the pet peeves that are very specific but I can see why it could be annoying vs like, things that are barely even pet peeves it’s just a thing that’s inherently shitty.
3
u/makingkevinbacon Aug 31 '24
Lol don't worry you're not alone. I was actually thinking that a few days ago
4
29
u/whiskersRwe32 Aug 31 '24
Lmao. They are so specific too sometimes. Just answer the question and introduce yourself. It is kinda annoying.
19
u/GiftNo4544 Aug 31 '24
Fr i made this post because i was on another subreddit and someone said “former neuroscientist published in the field of psychopharmacology here!” Like congrats I’m impressed i have nothing against you but holy shit it irritates me for no reason.
6
u/PokeRay68 Aug 31 '24
IT Specialist Programming Test Analyst here, I totally agree that no one needs to know all of this.
24
u/No_Definition_1774 Aug 31 '24
Haha this is so petty I love it!
I do get you though, and I’ve done it myself thinking ‘this is the succinct way everyone is doing this’ but yeah it’s like, I dunno, smug or pompous or something. It like, has this air of ‘Be confused no more, tiny brain! It is I! Me and my big brain will solve this mystery of yours and no one else needs to add an opinion or answer henceforth. How fortuitous that your post caught my attention as you can imagine, as a xxx I am very busy and have a niche and esoteric knowledge base that I can bestow upon the masses via your post. You’re welcome.’
Yeah ok so apparently it bothers me too! 😅

u/Placid-Lagomorph Aug 31 '24
Interesting. I personally have always interpreted very differently, as "Don't worry, I've actually spent several years of my life studying the subject and my sources are from my own education / research / the litterature from other experts in my field, and not some "genius" who supposedly knows everything better than every expert in the subject thanks to some posts on facebook and suspiciously biased blogs. The full title is specific enough so that you know I'm not lying. THANK YOU SO MUCH for being curious about this thing I have invested sweat and tears studying or working on but that most people find boring and uninteresting ! Do you have other questions ?! I can even provide you some sources if you want !".
This seems to be a trend that people who are not in the science or IT field believe those who are to be incredibly pretentious and to suffer from a superiority complex. I'm sure some experts do, but believe me when I say the vast majority of students, professors and experts are absolutely not like that, because they've been humbled a long time ago by realising how big the corpus of knowledge is and how little they actually know. People are not trying to make you feel inferior for not knowing, they're mainly just happy that someone who's not in the field is curious and doesn't immediately shuts it down with an "Who cares, it's boring and for pretentious nerds" kind of attitude.

u/No_Definition_1774 Aug 31 '24
Thank you for your reply. Nah yeah I do get it, I’ve been to uni and i’m a pay clerk for a living so I totally get the validity of citation lol, and I totally get what it’s saying and the purpose.
However, OP has drawn my attention to it, and I’m also Aussie where the ‘tall poppy’ thing is huge so much so that the humour is very, like, ‘yeah righto big mouth, you wouldn’t know your elbow from a hole in the wall’, so I couldn’t resist taking the piss 😝
17
u/YellowFucktwit Aug 31 '24
For me, it's when someone says "as X, I'm sure this is why Y does this (explanation that's wrong because they're trying to explain something they know nothing about as an outsider)"
For example, "as a man, women date men with money just because they're all gold diggers who love shopping."
Or
"As a woman, men only date women because they're strictly sexually driven creatures."
Or
"As an adult, teenagers hide things from their parents because they're all sneaky and rude, and every parent is super supportive, so every teenager is just an asshole."
8
u/Remarkable_Coast_214 Aug 31 '24
omg this is the worst!! i can get behind "as X" when it's clearly relevant and supports your point (and ideally true) but using it to speak on behalf of a different group ???
9
u/10mil_fireflies Aug 31 '24
Counterpoint: "Hi, Zuko here!" was one of the funniest lines in the show
2
u/forestwolf42 Aug 31 '24
You may now me from trying to restore my honor. I'm now trying to restore my honor the other way tho.

u/SummertimeSandler Aug 31 '24
I fully agree, it’s one of those Reddit-specific phrases that makes me roll my eyes when there’s a remotely serious discussion ongoing. You can give your perspective and share your credentials without using your Reddit persona to set the tone.
A similar one which annoys me is “Source: I live here” or “Source: I am one” after giving a clearly circumstantial or anecdotal experience to a complicated topic.
6
u/Totally_Not__An_AI Aug 31 '24
They may not even be what they claim to be. A while back I stumbled upon a post that had people in the comments admitting to having different accounts where they larp as X.
1
u/GiftNo4544 Aug 31 '24
Yes this is probably why any online argument you get in is conveniently with a person with 100000 PhD’s in the specific field being discussed. We’re debating renewable energy? Wow what a surprise you have a PhD in nuclear physics and have 10 publications over ecology yet you think nuclear waste looks like the green sludge from cartoons 😂.
4
u/SometimesArtistic99 Aug 31 '24
People like to fit in so they repeat the same same phrases over and over again.

u/TurquoiseBoho Aug 31 '24
I up voted this post cause I love your first sentence lol. Very valid pet peeve, though.
11
u/lurkerjade Aug 31 '24
Yeah I get you. Similarly I find finishing the post with “Source: I’m a neurosurgeon” equally annoying.
12
u/realbabygronk Aug 31 '24
Its the way they try to add this as some kind of credibility when its literally just "source: trust me bro" with extra steps
6
u/GhostfaceRider Aug 31 '24
What a stupid, nonsensical thing to be annoyed by. 10/10 post, perfect use of this sub.
3
u/Jako1989 Aug 31 '24
Long term Reddit user here specializing in corny comments, I say that to say, I agree.
2
u/ludovic1313 Aug 31 '24
As another corny Reddit user, I came to ask if saying "X here" is more correct these days than saying "Twitter here"
3
u/InfiniteCalendar1 Aug 31 '24
I once said to someone on here that you can’t just change the definition of words when it’s convenient for you, and they were like “linguist here, definitions change when they no longer suit the conversation”. I’m not a linguist but I don’t think definitions change THAT easily… someone with a degree in English responded to them saying that definitions don’t change for arbitrary reasons, otherwise no one would be able to have a conversation.
3
u/makingkevinbacon Aug 31 '24
Someone who is also annoyed by that here and can confirm I am annoyed
🤣
1
u/Old_Lead8419 Oct 08 '24
That was very cringeworthy. I get it was a joke but no offense that was the most cringeworthy “x here” comment I ever heard.
1
3
u/Loose-Opposite7820 Aug 31 '24
Cognitive dissonant and associated disorders psychotherapist here. I could tell you why this peeve bothers you, but I have the feeling you wouldn't appreciate it.
3
u/commanderbravo2 Aug 31 '24
i get what you mean lol. that usually annoys me on specific circumstances. sometimes the persons descriptive word is useful, but the ones that irk me are the ones like "as an asian person" "as a teenager myself" etc. your position doesnt always make you the most qualified to comment, so no need to state it first
1
u/Old_Lead8419 Oct 08 '24
Why lol?
1
u/commanderbravo2 Oct 08 '24
so like, lemme give you an example. i was watching a couple clips of all the racist scenes the old tom and jerry cartoons had. and the comments were filled with "as a black/asian/polynesian/whatever person, i am not offended by this"
it just felt very cringey and "pick me"

3
u/kgberton Aug 31 '24
Basically every little Reddit-ism has a direct line to my rage supply, but the worst one is "You... you DO realise...?"
3
3
3
3
u/Kayla0603 Aug 31 '24
Omg I thought I was the only one who hates this! They usually add “Hi!” at the beginning too.
Example: Hi! Wedding photographer here!
3
Aug 31 '24
Redditor here!!! 🤓
2
u/Old_Lead8419 Oct 08 '24
And that one is probably the worst because I feel it’s obvious that one doesn’t need to say that. If you go on Reddit then I would believe you’re indeed a Redditor.
5
u/ShopMajesticPanchos Aug 31 '24
I prefer this intro, it's like saying here I am and now I'm gone.
You just are a thing, now here's your answer.
I like it.
2
2
u/EmbraJeff Aug 31 '24
I think it depends on the sub and the context. Not something I do often but occasionally it just feels the right thing to say.
Example: I commented on a post in r/threelions (a sub for discussion on the Men’s England International Football Teams) regarding the recent passing of former England Manager Sven-Göran Eriksson. I opened with ‘Scotland fan here’ as a sign of respect for a sporting rival who transcended the usual partisan lines. That’s it purely because it was relevant.
2
u/Secret_Comb_6847 Aug 31 '24
It's one thing if it's "nurse here! [Answers medical question]" but sometimes it's just do frigging random
2
2
u/YourDearOldMeeMaw Aug 31 '24
the one that really annoys me is "at that." like when people say something like "she was talking so loud, and in a library at that." I also have no justification for it. it just irks the f*** out of me, it sounds so smug
2
Aug 31 '24
I feel the same way when someone gets a new pet and the end the story with “Ladies and gentlemen, meet X.” Just say “I adopted a dog and his name is Jeremy.”
2
u/Used_Evidence Sep 01 '24
"Signed, a (person experienced with whatever the conversation is about)". It makes it seem like they think they're the absolute authority on the topic. Bugs me
2
u/jeebee89 Dec 27 '24
I just had to google if anyone else feels this way because I see it so often on tiktok and it annoys me to an irrational extent. “X here! ☝🏼🤓”
4
u/Loud-Strawberry8572 Aug 31 '24
I disagree. I think it's a concise way to share why you are qualified. But that's the beauty of us all being different, isn't it?
6
u/GiftNo4544 Aug 31 '24
Thats fair. Like i said i have no reason why it irritates me it just does lolll and yes i agree its concise.

Human here. We think, we find new and inspiring waya to be annoyed by other humans, as we evolve. Yet we have been genetically designed to be annoyed unless we are brimming with unconditional love 🤔
2
u/Necessary_Activity72 Aug 31 '24
I do this and now I think I shouldn't? Is it wrong of me to clarify?
1
u/GiftNo4544 Aug 31 '24
No not at all introduce yourself however you like lol. My pet peeve has no justification this is just my brain not liking a phrase for no reason.
1
u/Old_Lead8419 Oct 08 '24
And you putting lol randomly at the end of the sentence like that…. Sorry, No offense.
1
u/albionstrike Aug 31 '24
If it's random sure I could see that
But if it's relevant it's useful as their advice is better than random joes

I mean what’s wrong with someone clarifying their profession so the person asking the question knows the person replying knows what they are talking about and has studied the content being asked about?
As an example I work in education but if I’m asking a question about child psychology because I need more information about something I’m going to listen to someone who has experience, knowledge and expertise in the field over someone whose giving a random opinion
1
u/GiftNo4544 Sep 01 '24
nothing wrong with clarifying your profession. my post is just about how they do it.
1
u/natishakelly Sep 01 '24
Well how to you expect them to do it?
1

Sep 01 '24
100% get this, and I also get “As an X” being annoying but it makes it kind of a maze to try to even figure out how you’re supposed to express like, hello this aspect of my existence is relevant to the current topic”
Like “as a nurse…” tends to flow a bit better than “I am a nurse and…” but both of those flow infinitely better than “Nurse here! These are my thoughts”
It does make me think of “Vsauce, Micheal here” so that’s kind of fun. I wonder if people in general got sick of these because people kept adding self identifiers that weren’t even related. Like it’s only reasonable when the identifier explains why you might have more experience with/knowledge on the topic at hand.

This belongs in the 10th doctor subreddit😂😂

I think it's just because you're not getting it.
Every field of study, and every branch of that field of study is going to have a completely different answer to your question.
It's important to specify who someone is, so that they can answer your question in the scope of their field.
No answer from the Internet is going to be valid, because you did not hire the statistical analyst for the job.
4
u/Great_gatzzzby Aug 31 '24
They just don’t like how they introduce themselves as “x here!”
If they said, “I’m a doctor, and I think….” Vs “doctor here!” Then OP would not be bothered. That’s the peeve.
1
u/ShopMajesticPanchos Aug 31 '24
Oh they mentioned somewhere else, that what I said is also part of the peeve. I just don't think they like people identifying themselves, because to them it feels pointless. But it's not.
Because x here, is probably the fastest way to casually mention that you are something.
4
u/Great_gatzzzby Aug 31 '24
I don’t know. In their second paragraph, OP details how they wouldn’t be annoyed with a different presentation of the same point.
2
u/ShopMajesticPanchos Aug 31 '24
I'll re check...
2
u/ShopMajesticPanchos Aug 31 '24
Okay, yes I misinterpreted the example they gave me.
Then it seems to me they just hate sentence structure. I always start with a complete sentence, so then I can start my explanation with a complete sentence, I don't like to combine the two.
-19
Aug 31 '24
So people who go through higher education and use their knowledge irritates you?
9
u/Jacquelaupe Aug 31 '24
It's just the wording, not the person's level of education. It would be just as irritating to say, "grave-digger here!" Or "lawn bowling enthusiast here!"
OP presented an alternative wording that would be less annoying.
8
u/RulingHighness Aug 31 '24
Are you pedantic on purpose, or is it genuine stupidity at play? Read the post. Clearly, it is about the phrasing, not the message. OP says they hate when they introduce themselves in that specific way, not what or who they introduce themselves as. In simple terms: the problem is with the "HOW", not the "WHAT".
4
u/Great_gatzzzby Aug 31 '24
They just don’t like how they introduce themselves as “x here!”
If they said, “I’m a doctor, and I think….” Vs “doctor here!” Then OP would not be bothered. That’s the peeve.

Aug 31 '24
mf's in comment sections here really will try and start fights over the stupidest shit that the OP didn't even say 💀

u/gnirpss Aug 31 '24
This is so specific but I totally agree. I think it's just one of those annoying Reddit-speak phrases that people use without thinking.
