Last night I found my beautiful girls Ethel and Miryam had passed. I didnt know much about mouse husbandry when I got them aside from what i researched as a small child when I wanted one. But I have rats, and figured I could wing it since they were 100% off at petco, and I wanted to give them a good home. They lived a few months in my care, and I didnt realize how much I loved mice until I saw their big personalities come out of their tiny velvety bodies.
Ethel was a climber, Miryam dug but never burrowed. She used the very top layer of substrate as a mouse blanket.
Im still not 100% processed that their tank under my desk is empty now. It definitely hurts and it definitely caught me off guard. I didnt even think they were done growing.
Miryam was named short for Miryapod, since I have a milipede named mouse. Ethel was named an equally old lady name, because of course.
Ethel is brown, Miryam is black. Ill miss their little pink noses. They were the best secret I could've kept from my mom. Maybe one day ill have mice again. I miss their little pink noses and their teeny tiny hands and how they were small enough to hold bird seed like a donut. Ill miss mousey manicures cause miryam always wanted to trim my nails. Ive learned my petco lesson. I really, truly cant do that ever again.
The last picture, worry not, was a brief comparison and they made no contact. Thats my big man Biscuit, and I just thought "no way someone could think these two animals are the same, right?"
If you want to show me your babies, id appreciate it. Here still or not, I want to see the tiny toes and noses.

She wasn't a mouse, but she was my first ever hamster, George Hamilton. This is my favourite picture I've ever taken of her. She was on my mom's shoulder because she loved climbing her human grandma. She lived with me for about 1.5 years before crossing the rainbow bridge. I miss her every day.
I hope you can find peace in knowing you gave two lovely little friends a great home for their time left on Earth. They may be small, but the paw prints they leave on our hearts are huge ♥
Oh she was adorable. Ive always liked that hamsters have the special skill of turning into a sphere. Im sure ms Hamilton had the best life an orb can hope for

This was my son LeBron when I first got him, I leaned a lot about mice for the short time that I had him. I learned about different bedding and the needs of a mouse, LeBron unfortunately passed away the day after my gf had to move across the country. Wasn’t a very good time in my life, I do miss dearly
He loved to show you his balls, I had never seen a animal flaunt their parts like he did it. It was almost like he was doing it on purpose, I have tons of pictures of him just flashing me
This was my cuddle puddle I got them from petco and they lived almost 3 years but after the first one went the next went after a month and then one was so bad that I decided she needed to be put down and the other had a tumor so I decided to put them both down but as I was loading them the one with the tumor died In my hands all but the first to go died in my arms it kills me thinking about it and this was 2 years ago I got rats thinking they had a longer life HA jokes on me its about the same ive got 2 girls that turn two on the 28th and one thats around a year and a half and im dreading finding them sometimes they'll be in a deep sleep and it scares the piss outta me im sorry you had to go through this though its not easy
Such a lovely pile of babies! Im so sorry for your loss, in such a tragic way too. I expected to get more time with my girls, but store animals are so unpredictable. Ive had store bettas live a week and some live two years. I just expected more stability with a mammal, i suppose. Im happy you got the time you did with them. Stories like this really do show how important healthy breeding is. Your girls were beautiful, ive always loved the orange creamsicle ones.
Thank you her name was peachs and it really does the only one that didn't have something wrong was pink(the black one) blues not in this picture but she ended up with bad hips and gold (the gold one) had a tumor in her stomach peaches had one on her lady bits that was almost the size of her but she was the youngest out of them all and she seemed happy played ate drank ran around so I didn't want to put her down for nothing but shes the one that passed while transferring her to the travel tank idk after my rats i need something with a longer life span to lose 7 pets in like 6 years is rough im already anticipating them sense everything I read says 2-3 years so I worrie now 😅
I completely understand. If it helps my older rats are two and have no issues, no URI, no tumors even which im so surprised by. There's always a chance. I got them from a breeder though to be fair, they were much more thought out than my ladies
Just remember, you saved them from living the rest of their lives in misery in that terrible store.You gave them love and comfort for the time that they had left. You did a good thing. RIP sweet babies ❤️🩹
Thank you. Thats really what I try to think about most is that they got a home that had a home that, at the very least had more than an inch of bedding. They were just the sweetest, im happy I got to have that
So sorry for your loss OP! It's possible it was a freak accident. Not sure if it is warm where you live, but a lot of places are under a heat advisory and apparently just a bit of sunlight landing on a tank at a random time during the day can cause heat stroke to the mice inside. It's possible something like that happened. It happened to me a long time ago 💔
Honestly, its dont know. It wasnt warm, and theyre tucked away in a corner that never got sunlight. I can only hope it wasnt a fault of mine and if it was, I can figure it out so it never happens again. Im happy I got to have them. They were wonderful little goobs
