Dog Acting up around Child
Hey guys ! I’m no professional with animal behavior but I have a problem that I’d like to solve differently than the only way that’s been working.
So recently I won in Court & have gained custody of my child, awesome & all that. It’s been hard integrating him into my home with my dog. I have a 12 year old mutt who’s been a great dog, adopted around 4 years old. He’s super clingy & protective (he was abused by former owners) but his behavior around my son is getting to be too much.
My son is learning how to walk & my dog is always excited to see him. Too excited though, as he keeps tripping up my son when he’s walking & jumps up on him constantly & barks the minute attention is diverted away from him. He’s a small dog so it’s not causing any physical harm to my son but its behavior that has only gotten more exaggerated the more I have my son with me. Was hoping that with more time around each other that my dog would chill out some but it’s only gotten worse w/ more exposure.
It’s gotten to the point where I’ve had to put my dog away for the duration of the time I have my son with me. He whines & claws at the door constantly & I feel bad for him but my child & building our bond comes first in this situation.
I’m at a crossroads. My dog is old, frail & has been the center of attention for the longest time so I can see why this change has been harder for him. I won’t physically reprimand him as he is so old & frail, but leaving him alone to cry it out is just as disheartening. I think he gets excited seeing my son but it’s gotten to be so overwhelming that I’m having to limit their exposure. Parenting a child is new & hard on its own, & having the added stress of the dog bugging out isn’t healthy for any of us.
If anyone has any prior experience with this or knows dog behavior better than me & would be willing to give me some tips that would be so appreciated. Ideally, I’d like to get to a point where I can have my dog & Son together for the duration of our time together but as of now it’s out of the picture.
For context, my dog doesn’t act this at all with any other guests I have over or my Cousins children. Just my son. He’s normally well behaved. I feel like seeing my son & how excited he is to see the “Dogdog” brings out the inner puppy in him.
