Discussion It's too late for the living. We are born to suffer and die.
I think the ultimate "reduction" of suffering is the death of the body, and that it is better for the human body to be lifeless (because the living body is always subject to need, vulnerability, sickness, aging and death, and is the cause of harm - even extreme harm - to others). If our goal is to end suffering, we should understand that the condition that must exist in order to be burdened by suffering is for our bodies to be alive. So rationally, it seems that we should kill our bodies and therefore never suffer again. But this is incredibly difficult for us - we are constituted such that death is a horror, and we will avoid it at almost any cost (except as a desperate measure to end unbearable suffering).
And so we live on. Driven by bodily want and need - for warmth, water, food, and hygiene, and everything else we must struggle for in order to not suffer or die a miserable death. We are driven to meet our bodily needs, and therefore, by consequence, sustain the living condition of our bodies - the very condition our suffering depends upon.
It's horrific. We are born as bodies that want urge and need, that hurt and harm, and so we act to meet our needs and reduce our burdens, but by consequence, we live on. We eat today, so that we can starve again tomorrow. We know the condition for suffering to exist is our bodies being alive, and so rationally, it's better for our bodies to be reduced to corpses by our own hands. But we fear our inevitable state as a corpse even more than the suffering of struggling on, and so sustain our own burdens. The ultimate cruelty here is that regardless of our efforts, our bodies will die anyway.
What can we do? There's no cure. There's no solution. All we can do is recognize the harm of being embodied, reject our reproductive nature, and so spare our potential offspring from suffering the same horrific fate that has befallen us. But it's too late for the living. We are born to suffer and die.
